8BitDo Made The Last Nintendo Switch Controller I'll Ever Use

- The 8BitDo Ultimate Controller is precisely that on the Nintendo Switch: Ultimate. It does everything that I would want from a third-party controller for the Switch. All of the functionality is there with a premium finish that makes the controller stand out on its own.
There are a few drawbacks that I want to talk about in the video that makes a bit of a blemish on my personal experience, but overall it doesn't hinder or make me regret the purchase.

#8BitDo #NintendoSwitch #Review #8BitDoUltimateController #Unboxing #Nintendo #NintendoSwitchOLED - Hry
Hi friends! Just a quick update on what I mentioned in the video. SteamOS has updated their preview build to support the dongle for the 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller. My assumption is that they'll add this to the beta and eventually into a stable build. Here's the link: www.gamingonlinux.com/2022/12/steamos-34-preview-adds-support-for-8bitdo-ultimate-wireless-controller-dongle/
If you're interested in purchasing anything that I mentioned in the video then here are some affiliate links:
8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller: amzn.to/3A1PK2h
Xbox Series X Blue Controller: amzn.to/3E62hUQ
If you use these links to purchase anything, then I may get a commission from the sale. It helps support the channel at no extra cost to you, so thank you!
Hi, really loved your video, went ahead and used your affiliate link, subbed and liked.
Thanks! Much appreciated! 🙌
You have to use the software on a computer to reprogram it. You can also use a mobile app on Android or iOS.
No. They save onto the controller itself.
With the vibration motors it is meant to be that way. The left side has a larger weight to rotate giving the heaviest feel compared to the other side that is designed for higher frequency vibrations. Pretty standard on most controllers though lightly more pronounced with 8bitdo controllers.
The difference was way more pronounced on the Ultimate compared to the other controllers that I have. Even the 8BitDo SN30 Pro+ and SN30 Pro 2 didn't have that much of a difference between the left and right vibration motors.
Happy this video is out now :D
Been looking forward to it!
Hope you enjoy! ✌️
Definitely picking this up nice review 👍
Thanks! Appreciate it! 🙌
This thing is slick! I like how the dock conforms to the controller shape
Dude, it's so goooooood. 🙌
He forgot to mention a major standout feature, the Hall effect thumb-sticks. It looks like he didn’t know how to connect it to other systems, it works on steamdeck and ios.
Don't have an iPhone to test it on so only used it on Android.
The Bluetooth version of the controller doesn't work on the Steam Deck. Only the 2.4G version that's $49 does AFAIK. Didn't get that one. And yes, the Hall effect is great, but only available on the Bluetooth version and not the 2.4g version.
@@baldlyrudy can confirm the Bluetooth ver works on the Steam Deck I have it connected via Bluetooth just won’t work with the 2.4ghz adapter, but does work if you boot to windows on the Deck, but I find the 2.4ghz to be spotty cause sometimes it doesn’t register presses
Eh. I'm not a fan of running Windows on the Steam Deck, though they did recently update the APU. Maybe it's worth giving it a go. What I hope is that there will eventually be native XBGP support on the Steam Deck.
Was it working properly in SteamOS using Bluetooth?
@@baldlyrudy Bluetooth controllers work fine on Deck
Though rumble is hit or miss, it seems
Just know the Bluetooth one has these but the souly 2 4ghz version does not.
On the rumble thing, asymetric rumble motors is by design, most 8bitdo and some OEM controllers do that. no idea why, but at least it's not because it's a faulty controller
I'm guessing it might make it shake more in the hand because of the imbalance.
Wow! I had no idea. I either didn't notice it on the SN30+ and SN30 Pro 2, or it wasn't as pronounced as it is on the Ultimate Controller. Either way, it seems odd to me in comparison to other controllers. Regardless, I'd still recommend it. It feels good to use.
2:58
Regarding the vibration motors on the controller, I felt this from the 8bitdo' SN30pro+. I guess they're normal to the controller. Apparently, I don't notice the difference of the vibrations of different sides.
Yeah. That's what other people in the comments have mentioned. It's crazy because I don't think I noticed it on the SN30 Pro+ or my SN30 PRO2.
Anyone know if this controller works with the Evercade VS system and if so, which version is recommended for that system
Just recently got the Ultimate
The wings/grips don't flare out as much as other controllers of similar design, and follows the convention of its older SN30 Pro+ And Pro2 controllers in terms of shape/ergonomics
Pros and cons I guess, my wrists have to be bent more when in a more 'regular' posture when holding the controllers, if there was one, but it's more comfy when having the controller somewhere on the lap, or when its held further away, where the wrists won't be bending as much. Index fingers would be defaulted inbetween both shoulder bumpers/triggers as well - not sure where I feel about that at the moment, but it's something one can get used to I imagine, being able to access both somewhat more quickly than having them rest purely on the bumpers alone
Pretty happy with it - freely switching being connected to the PC and the Switch is really nice and convenient. Should've gone with the Black version on my end tho, can only imagine that the white one I have will pick up on dirt over time and make them rather obvious from the grip design and surface texture
Agreed! I also wish I went with the black version. I can see the white version getting dirty quickly, like the PS5 DualSense.
@@baldlyrudy forgot to mention - where they have the +, - and Favourite buttons are nice too, but the Home button can be a bit of a reach depending on hand size IMO
- and Fave can easily be tapped by the left thumb and + can be hit with the right thumb without worry about hitting either sides respective analogue sticks for my hands
That's true. I didn't experience too many issues with hitting the home button. My wife though, she definitely had issues.
Hey that's me on the video. Thanks for answering my question.
No worries dude! Got my curiosity going and I had to find out for myself. 😅
i got this yesterday, i think the shaking on the wake up comes becomes you get the controller of the charge so youi will most likely shake it somewhat anyway when you unplug it etc.
That makes sense. Sometimes I don't put the controller on the charger, which is where I'd just shake it to pick it up to wake it up. Lol
I'm currently using the SN30Pro+, I prefer the layout of the ultimate. Would get it if the switch version comes out in pink.
Ooooooo...my wife would probably love the Ultimate Controller in pink.
How do I use the back buttons they won’t eork
Hello. I have a question for you. Can you plug the charging dock into the switch dock? It receives power?
Yes! You can plug the charging dock of the 8BitDo to the Switch Dock and it doubles as a charger and the dongle (since it's stored inside the dock).
I love my Gulikit King Kong 2 Pro. Same hall effect joysticks and it's so comfortable.
Agreed! I love my Gulikit King Kong 2 Pro Controller, too. It's very different from the 8BitDo Ultimate Controller.
Si! So venezolano y puertorriqueño.
Nuevamente muchas gracias
Did you compare the gyro controls with the Nintendo Pro Controller? Alot of 3rd party controllers have laggy and slower gyros, just wanted to make sure before I make my purchase.
Tried it in a few matches of Splatoon 3. Works just as well and didn't experience any lag in those sessions. It's a little tiny bit slower, but not by much. It's very hard to tell the difference and could've been a placebo effect on my end. It's very, very close to the Switch Pro Controller in terms of speed and responsiveness.
@@baldlyrudy That's good to know. I think i'm gonna buy this one then, if anything I can always return it.
Yeah. Give it a go and let me know what you think. Like I said in the video, this is now my go to for playing while docked.
@@baldlyrudy will do. It'll be awhile though, it's not available on amazon spain yet lol
Lol. Perdóname. No sabia. 😅
Everyone who wish to buy 8BitDo need to know, it is impossible to use analog triggers and gyro at the same time.
If you wish to use it for PS games, you will get a limited functionality unlike using original PS controllers + adapters.
works fine in nintendo switch mode. Perhaps there's been a firmware update.
@@rs.matr1x In Nintendo Switch mode there is no analog triggers, they are just regular buttons
I have the same issue with the rumble. It feels fine in game though? Someone told me this was intended.
Yeah. That's what people have said, that it's intended. I'm okay with it and have gotten used to it. It's just more pronounced than other controllers for some reason.
Jaja! Que bueno que se arregló.
Hey, Rudy - Just came across your channel. Great review.
If you happen to own the Xbox-styled 8bitdo Ultimate Controller as well, do you know if this would work with the Switch? I’m considering buying the Switch version, but if the Xbox version works with both systems, it’d be nice to simply have one controller. Thanks!
Hey Rich! Thanks for watching! That's actually a great question.
As far as I know, I don't recall a single controller that can swap seamlessly from Switch to Xbox. If there is one out there, I'd love to test it out and see how seamless it works between platforms. 8BitDo has this same exact Ultimate controller for Xbox, but it's wired.
I do remember a dongle that let you use an Xbox controller on the Nintendo Switch called Mayflash NS 2 Wireless Adapter. There's also the 8BitDo Wireless Bluetooth adapter.
Mayflash NS 2: amzn.to/3gDay9T
8BitDo Wireless Bluetooth Adapter: amzn.to/3XESGMa
Both of those are affiliate links, in case anyone else wants to get those. Again, that's a great question. 🙌
Thanks, dude! This is super helpful. Above and beyond, really. I recently picked up a Series S and an Elite Series 2 controller and remember hearing about the Mayflash work-around for the Switch years ago. I’ll have to look into this! It’d be great to potentially use the Elite controller with the Switch. If that proves to be a viable option, I’ll definitely use your affiliate link and circle back here with an answer.
You’ve got a new subscriber over here. Keep up the good work!
Grace and Peace
Thank you! 🙌
Let me know how it goes. I might have to get one to test out myself. 🤔
Will do! And likewise.
Yo! So I received the 8BitDo drive this evening and, sadly, it doesn’t seem to be capable of pairing an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller with a Switch OLED. It may need to be plugged into the usb port inside of the Switch dock (next to the HDMI port), but there’s not enough space for the Bluetooth receiver, simply due to its width. It was worth the effort, but I’m going to stick with my Switch Pro controller for ease of use, instead of trying to force a workaround!
hello, currently im confused want to buy kingkong pro 2 or 8bitdo ultimate bluetooth.
im a PC gamer, only PC. prefered game like fast pace fight, adventure like naruto and spiderman miles morales, sometime chilling game like stardew valley.
honetsly, i read many complaint about kingkong pro 2 QC. the button abxy gonna come sticky and smushy or something like that. its really dealbreaker for me if the button really bad.
should i go kingkong pro 2 or 8bitdo ultimate bluetooth ?
Hello. I'd go with the 8BitDo. That's what I gravitate more to out of the two. Also, I haven't ran into issues with my GuliKit KingKong Pro 2, but I also use it less than my 8BitDo Ultimate.
@@baldlyrudy Thanks dude! 🙌. im gonna go 8bitdo right now.
@@muhamadtaruna5706 you're welcome! Let me know how it goes.
can you talk to other players using this controller like you would with an xbox controller?
I don't use nfc and I disable rumble on all games lol. I'm definitely gonna get one
Then you're set. This is hands down the best controller on the Switch right now. I haven't touched my Pro since getting the 8BitDo Ultimate.
2:58
I have that issue on my Joy-Con... It only started happening after using the Pro Controller for the first time
Based on what other people have said, that's an intentional design in rumble for all controllers, but IDK. On the 8BitDo controller, it feels super off balanced.
@@baldlyrudy Strange...
Yeah. Super weird.
Wait doesnt this controler like never have drift?
It has Hall sensing joysticks, so yeah. Forgot to mention that in the video.
Man I appreciate the video but you didn't know about the hall sticks or that it does in fact work with the steam deck, which is a big deal right now. I love mine for that. Do your research everyone!
Totally forgot to record the Hall sense info for the video. That's my bad.
And no, the model I got didn't work with the Steam Deck at launch with the dongle. It worked after a patch from Valve through their Beta channel.
www.dexerto.com/tech/steam-deck-update-adds-support-for-8bitdo-ultimate-controller-2004961/
Sinceramente me encanta.
¡Phenomenal! Gracias por el nuevo sub. 🙌
What game is that at 5:23
Bayonetta 3. It's a really fun action game.
This one or GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro Controller? Because I have to buy a new controller for my PC, and I really care about the hall effect sticks.
Both the 8BitDo Ultimate and the Gulikit King Kong 2 Pro Controller have hall sense joysticks. You're not going to have to worry about drift either way.
When I was playing with the 8BitDo Ultimate on PC, I had no issues. Everything worked as it should. If you're only going to play on PC and nothing else, then I'd recommend the cheaper 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G. You'll save a bit of money and get all the same great features except for Bluetooth connectivity.
8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G: amzn.to/3tlhHOw
@@baldlyrudy Unfortunately, and surprisingly, the 2.4Gh version does not support the hall sense.
It's ALPS potentiometer i guess.
Dang. You're right. Totally missed that on my part. Yeah, I'd go with the Bluetooth version then. I'd go with the hall sense if I had to choose between the two.
Can you wake up the nintendo switch when using 2.4Ghz?
Yes.
How do u connect it to the switch?
Try this:
1. Turn on the console
2. Select "System Settings" from the HOME Menu
3. Select "Controllers and Sensors"
4. Select "Pro Controller Wired Communication" to toggle the setting on or off.
Then change order of controllers and connect your controller. Did it work?
What's better than a Switch Pro, Dual Sense, and a Xbox Series S controller? 8bitdo Ultimate!
Sincerely,
I guess I'm a hipster, but I play on Linux. Other 8bitdo products are hit/miss on the platform, especially in Switch mode. Do you know if this work on Linux, specifically Ubuntu?
Lol. Not a hipster. There are some pretty obvious benefits to running Linux as your main platform of choice.
The closes thing that I got to using a Linux based system was the Steam Deck, and for that I would recommend the $49 version of this controller.
8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G: amzn.to/3tlhHOw
Legit question, is it 8-bit-Doh or 8-bit-Doo?
I've heard both, so I have no real idea. 😅
Can this work in Mac OS?
I don't think so (according to their site), but I also don't have anything Apple to test it on. 😬
What i can't stand about the official Nintendo Pro Controller is that it has 12ms(tested and confirmed) more input lag than Nintendo's own Joy-con's. In-game characters feel a little heavier and less responsive with the Pro controller, and now it makes sense why. I'm looking for a 3rd party solution, with low latency, and the 8bitdoultimate may just be it.
Some guy tested the latency for both the official Pro and Ultimate controllers, when connected to their PC. The pro got 12ms, and the Ultimate got 5ms. So you're shaving off 7ms of latency, which aint too shabby! I wonder how this translates when connected to the Switch though?
Two down sides i've noticed with the Ultmate though is that the Gyro is slower and it only offers 2 shades of Vanilla rumble. bummer!
thanks
You're welcome. 👍

Why you no like the King Kong 2?
I do like it. czcams.com/video/XDJf-87jp_A/video.html
@@baldlyrudy you're right. Thanks for the reply
No worries.
I have been disappointed by 8bitdo. So many video creators used the sn30 pro plus for an hour and say its the best controller, but then the drift starts and the degrading joysticks make playing gross, then it disconnects mid gameplay and I just wonder if people even bother to test these long term. No one ever makes reviews a few months later, when you realize you wasted your money.
That sounds like a great video idea. Thanks for that. I've been mainly gaming on the 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller and the Gulikit King Kong 2 Pro Controller. I have an SN30 Pro+ and SN30 PRO2 that I bought before starting this channel, but haven't gone back to it. Definitely worth giving it a go.
i used mine for like 2 years and it was great until I broke it on accident
With this, Nintendo can close it's joystick department because there's no need for them to improve switch joystick anymore.
Here's a banana for the algorithm.
Thanks for the extra potassium! 🙌
HOW THE FUCK DO YOU PAIR THIS THING!!!
What is the Pair button, there's no [button listed in the fucking manual and every video just says how good this thing is
Whoa. No need to yell dude.
Try this:
1. Turn on the console
2. Select "System Settings" from the HOME Menu
3. Select "Controllers and Sensors"
4. Select "Pro Controller Wired Communication" to toggle the setting on or off.
Did that fix the connection issue?
@@baldlyrudy Sorry, I'm loosing my mind because everyone says to press the pair button but there's no such button. Also, I did it, but the ultimate still won't connect. What do I do next?
@@randomoffgrid no worries. Hmmm...are you using it docked? And are you trying to connect via Bluetooth or 2.4Ghz?
@@baldlyrudy The switch isn't docked, it's on my lap, and I'm trying to use the controller to test it out
Gotcha. Then you're going to want to go Bluetooth. Make sure your Switch isn't on Airplane Mode. Have you tried this?
1. Turn on the controller, and confirm the mode switch is on S.
2. Hold the pair button of the controller for 3 seconds to enter its pairing mode.
3. Go to Switch settings--Controllers--Change Grip/Order.
4. The controller home LED become solid when the connection is successful.

So sad .. It is not MFI product.
This is designed specifically for Switch and Windows. I'm sure there are good MFi controllers put there that'll let you game on Apple products.
Can someone please review the gyro man... is it good I wanna buy it but I need it for what I play 🥲
The gyro isn't bad, but the Switch Pro Controller is slightly better and tighter. The gyro on the 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller is better than the Gulikit King Kong 2 Pro Controller, IMO.
