  • Vakfikebir is 45 km from Trabzon city center. It is in the west, Çarşıbaşı in the east, Beşikdüzü in the west and Tonya in the south.
In the north, it is surrounded by the Black Sea.
Samsun-Trabzon-Rize state highway passes through the center of the district.
    Its area is 235 km2, with a population of 27,330 in 2020.
Vakfikebir District is showing vitality in economic terms.
The fact that the district is the shopping center of Tonya, Şalpazarı, Beşikdüzü, Eynesil and Görele districts geographically constitutes the reason for this increase in liveliness.
Agricultural activities constitute the most important economic activity of the district.
Since 1871, a market has been established in the district center for shopping on Mondays and local products are offered for consumption in this market.
In addition, since 1998, a Producer's Market has been established in the district center on Fridays every week.
The most important economic activity of the region is hazelnut production.
Tea takes the second important place in agricultural production in the district.
Tea was tried for the first time around Trabzon in Of District in 1952 and when it was understood that it gave good results, it spread to the environment.
In 1958, its production started in Vakfıkebir district.
Corn and bean cultivation areas, which are other important agricultural products, are gradually decreasing over time.
In recent years, within the scope of the project of narrowing the hazelnut areas, a Kiwi orchard facility has been built as an alternative product to hazelnuts.
Livestock breeding is common both in Vakfıkebir and the Black Sea Region, but it does not go beyond small-scale animal breeding, which we can call family business.
The legendary delicious butter and stone oven bread of Vakfikebir has gained nationwide fame as Vakfikebir Bread.
Although the exact date of foundation of Vakfıkebir is not known, it is a very old settlement.
Vakfikebir, which has been under the domination of the Hittite, Persian, Roman and Trabzon Empires throughout its history, came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire after Fatih Sultan Mehmet destroyed the Trabzon Empire in 1461.
After the conquest of Trabzon, Turkish tribes from different parts of the Ottoman Empire settled in Vakfikebir.
Vakfikebir became a Turkish homeland in a very short time as a result of the incoming tribes adopting new settlements and carrying their cultures to the region.
Vakfikebir, which was exposed to various administrative levels and names after it joined the borders of Ottoman Turkey, became a district of Trabzon province in 1874 within the framework of the Ottoman Province Law of 1864.
The district was occupied by the Russian Tsardom on 20 July 1916 and was saved from the enemy occupation by our heroic army on 14 February 1918.
The period under occupation is known as 'Immigration' among the people and the Independence Day is commemorated with ceremonies on 14 February every year.
The people of the district have always stood by Atatürk in his efforts to save the country and establish an independent Turkish state.
In this context, the people of the district sent Kellecioğlu Abdullah Hasip (Ataman) Bey to the Erzurum Congress as a Büyükliman Delegate with a decision they took.
Abdullah Hasip Bey served as one of the two clerks of the Erzurum Congress.
With the establishment of the Republic, Vakfikebir preserved its feature of being a district and its borders.
The first name of Vakfıkebir is Fol. This name of the county 45 km. It was named after the creek of the same name originating in the south of the town and pouring into the sea in the town centre.
The second name of Vakfikebir is Büyükliman.
The part between Fener Cape to the east of Vakfikebir and Zeytin Burnu to the west is a natural harbor partially closed to the shoreline.
Vakfikebir is located in the center of this natural harbor.
For this reason, Vakıfkebir was known as Büyükliman for many years.
Vakıfkebir got its current name from the mother of Yavuz Sultan Selim, Gülbahar Hatun.
Gulbahar Hatun, who traveled from Istanbul to Trabzon by sea to see her son, Prince Selim, who was the Governor of Trabzon at that time, was caught in a great storm, and she devoted herself to dedicating the lands she would land on to God if she survived.
Gulbahar Hatun, who set foot on the land in the settlement center, which was then called Büyükliman, dedicates these lands.
Since the donor was the wife of the sultan, the name of the region became Vakfıkebir (Great Foundation) after this date.
Although the name of Vakfıkebir has a history of five hundred years, the names Fol and Büyükliman are still used among the people.
