Thanks so much watching one of the first TEST DRIVES of the MDX Type S on CZcams! One small correction, we accidentally said it was a 3.0L twin-turbo V-6 when it is actually a TWIN-SCROLL single turbo V-6. We regret the error.

This is far more impressive than the TLX Type S, though it will be even slower. They actually put some effort into the interior and features, there is real luxury here for a the first time in a long time in an Acura.

I agree. It seems like Acura was trying to make the TLX a 3 and 5 Series competitor, but didn't nail either. This is a different story. It gives up very little to most of the competition. $72K loaded up isn't terrible, considering the Germans will be missing equipment at this price and a Genesis GV80 3.5 Prestige is more expensive.

first: THANK YOU for doing a full review on the MDX type S as we all been going crazy for one. Took this out for a test drive and gotta say, was VERY impressed with everything.. it's a hell of a fun driving experience. For an SUV.. that thing moves man lol. they really did nerf the exhaust sound drastically compared to the TLX type S but then again.. it's an SUV aimed for those with a family but also want that "Sporty Feeling" while driving ( it's also something that can be easily fixed too).
Not really understanding why so many people are nit picking things when you're getting so much for less than the price of a fully loaded BMW or Audi.
And to those who are complaining about it's speed and 0-60 times... it's fast enough for what it is and especially as a daily drive...
btw the ELS Studio speakers is a freaking force! crank it up all the way and it's a party lol.
BTW: Should have showed everyone a quick look when it's lifted. it looks REALLY GOOD! very nice height and stance.

Good evening gentlemen. Once again good walk around, review and drive video for the 2022 Acura MDX Type S. Like what was mentioned in the video Acura included few firsts with this performance level MDX Type S. First SUV in their lineup to get the Type S badge, first SUV in this trim to have massaging seats, first SUV in this trim to have the adjustable dynamic air suspension system and first SUV in this trim to have the price points a pinch over $73,000. Before I go any further I would like to point out the bloopers in this video. At the 13:27 to 13:30 time marks Drew was trying to say Acura's true TouchPad controller (Drew said ah and then ahhhhhhhhh, lol) and at the 19:00 time mark when Mason was entering the third row the recorder slips out of his pocket. With performance numbers coming in at 355 horsepower and 354 pound feet of torque, those numbers are pretty good. Those performance numbers makes it compete well with the Audi Q7 Turbo V6 which produces 335 horsepower and 369 pound feet of torque. Two other vehicles to mention for competing with the Acura MDX Type S would be the Genesis GV80 which has performance numbers coming in at 375 horsepower along with 391 pound feet of torque and the Jeep Grand Cherokee L with the V8 engine coming in at 357 horsepower along with 390 pound feet of torque. It would be nice if all four of these vehicles compete against each other in a drag race.

The MDX Type S performs a lot better than the sum of its numbers. I wouldn't call it a 'high performance' ( AMG, M, etc) SUV, but it is definitely a performance SUV, with the added bonus of a lot of luxury in the advance trim. I would guess based off having driven the X5 and this, the MDX is just slightly slower all around. Handling is similar, but the feature content is greater here.
It's not inexpensive but when you consider the features that come in the higher trim, it's a viable option to everything in the segment for a little bit less money.
Also I'm willing to bet they dialed down the external exhaust sound because of concerns about reverberations in the cabin. It's something that's less of an issue in a Sedan..

Nice touch and i think all the MDX should look like this and they could have made the MDX TYPE S with a 400-430 HP and 400 LB ft of torque. They should also add a Shift Level for the Type S cause then push buttons don’t flow well with a Type S model.

I wish for more power as well. Since they benchmarked the Germans and Acura doesn't do V8s, hitting right in the middle would've been awesome. Maybe this powertrain with a hybrid setup, which would've improved fuel economy as well(17/21 is pretty dismal for something of this size and with only 355hp, when something like a Ford Expedition weighing 1000lbs more and 25% larger gets 17/23).
      450hp would've been NICE!

Honda is being too safe with this engine. The boost is way too low, clearly designed for longevity over performance. 400hp out of this shouldn't be a problem if Ford can do it with their 3.0L V6.

Seeing that last gen gray TL behind it was a little eye opening. Honda/Acura hasn’t really took a crazy leap since then. That TL is possibly a 2014 or 2015, and looks like they were designed around the same time.

As an owner of an Explorer ST I really can't see how I can justify spending the extra $6-$13k more for the MDX. I have 90% of all the features, really just air ride is missing, but I get more HP and Torque. Was really hoping the Type S could be had for closer to $65k and I would make the upgrade. The better interior would be nice, but the Explorer ST is functional.

    • @phatphuk2761

I would get the Explorer ST kissing cousin, the Lincoln Aviator, with the same 400hp and 410ft (or 415ft) pounds of torque. In the Reserve and Black label trims, would get ventilated second row seats, and 3rd row air vents. Something that Acura is missing at $73,000+. I know the Lincoln does cost a little more, in Reserve with upgraded packages, and in Black Label. MDX does have usb ports in the 3rd row, something the Explorer and Aviator is missing, lol. (I know that isn't a biggie). Acura (Honda) just has the better reputation for reliability.

As a Honda enthusiast who lives over seas I’m so puzzled by Acura and their line up. We had the MDX sold where I live back in 2001-2006 or so but badged as a Honda. I wish they’d do that again and just bring the entire Acura range to the international market. All they sell brand new here in Australia are boring, auto only civics and CRV’s these days. Oh and the Accord but we don’t even get the 2L turbo and I’m guessing they don’t sell because I’ve only ever seen one on the road.
