- Warhammer 40,000: How to paint a Primaris Space Marine (Ultramarines Chapter) with Retro 90's Energy!
This colour scheme is inspired by the cover art of the 2nd Edition Space Marine Codex released in 1993, some might say the glory years of GW!

Super clean and crisp! '90s style for the win!
Thankyou Miguel, it's a fun but challenging style! 😊
Around the time I had quit 40k, I remember there was a trend for "true scale" space marines in some hobby circles of 40k, I can't help but feel like those of us who were converting our own true scale marines somehow influenced GW to start making the primaris marines, which are basically the old true scale marines.
Lovely paint job by the way, I still think the classic color schemes from 2nd-3rd-4th editions are some of the best.
Thanks for watching! I definitely remember that true scale phase, and I think it had an influence on the primaris designs, I actually like the new models a lot and I think it's hard to go back to those classic retro models now with their strange proportions... but those firstborns were truly amazing at the time! 😀
This is my favorite kind of ultramarine.
Mine too! 😁
Super cool video. Love how you used new paints to get the old school paintjob running!
Aw, thanks Miguel, always appreciate your support on the channel my friend! I wish I could reply to this with predatorhandshake.jpg 😊
Way too unpopular absolutely amazing haven’t seen better 👏 👏 👏
Thankyou so much! 😊
Thank you for including the paint summary at the start. I have just started playing 40k again and was looking for some tips on getting the new marines to match my old ones.
No worries, thanks for watching the video, and good luck on the painting journey! 😊
Looks great. Yes, more original chapters please, even the legions not around during the 2nd Ed era. And the traitor legions pre-heresy. And... if you have any, the old school Black Legion models, the rounder ones prior to the current grimmer darker spikier spikey boyz.
Thankyou! I'm currently painting some Chaos Space Marines, and went on a deep nostalgic dive through all the old codexes for inspiration, definitely saw some of those awesome old designs in there! 😀
@@TheHobbyGrotto - I am wanting to try do some Raven Guard in 2nd/3rd Ed style, big solid colours and green bases, just need to clear the hobby bench. The RG didn't even exist at that 2nd Ed/ 1993 time, so no period art to pick from. Am looking forward to your CSM - after my RG Ihave some chaos spikey boyz I will call the Crimson Boots - will have a Crimson Fists colour scheme but with red boots and an otherwise skinhead gang themed aesthetic.
I better hit subscribe...
That sounds fun, I do love the Crimson Fists colour scheme! 😄 One of my dream projects would be a space marine from all 18 first founding chapters, but using all the cool old school marine minis in the classic schemes, goblin green bases, all nicely lined up on the shelf 😁
Youve become one of my favorite new warhammer painting channels. Love the organization step process of your videos. Keep em coming! Would love to see you do a Winged Hive Tyrant or Angron.
Thankyou so much! I've been seeing a lot of Angron around since the new release, so I've definitely been thinking he would be cool to paint! Your comment reminds me though, I should paint some more large models for the channel, I haven't really done anything like that yet! Biggest problem is choosing because there are so many cool ones! 😅
@@TheHobbyGrotto Well whichever large model you choose to do, im sure it will turn out great!
Aw thanks! There are lots of cool large minis that could be a centrepiece in my armies, I'll have to scan the range! 😁
Would love to see you tackle more chapters like this, maybe even experiment and come up with retro paint schemes for the traitor legions if they stayed loyal then do the same for the loyalists but turned to chaos :) something about these simplw paint schemes makse me think it would be a fun challenge
Great video!
Great to hear! I've actually been experimenting with chaos marine/traitor legion ideas because there are so many cool colour schemes. My biggest problem at the moment is deciding whether to use Heresy or 40k models, because I like them both! 😅
@@TheHobbyGrotto I say do both, do a heresy mini in the standard colors then a 40k mini in the what it would look like in a 90s equivalent. Personally the Blood Angels are my favorite because it was red and black with green being the lenses of the helmet
This is a cool idea, yeah definitely Blood Angels are high on my list, red is so fun to paint, and cool lore too! I'll have to pick up some heresy minis and see how they roll, I've not actually painted any before.
@@TheHobbyGrotto From experience I can say they're fun just the right amount of detail where it needs to be. Also depends on the armor you get MK3 is online, MK6 is around and MK 4 is somewhere I haven't been able to find it again but they're definitely fun to paint
I'd probably go for the available plastics just for convenience, I'll have to do some investigating! 😀 Pretty sure my mates got some Heresy stuff...
I really liked this and it makes me want to break out my paint stripper...again. lol
Haha nothing wrong with stripping some minis, but it's also good to keep your old stuff intact so you can see how you have progressed! 😀
@@TheHobbyGrotto oh I know the answer to that too lol
"not very much" i don't paint nearly enough considering how much grey plastic I've got...
Haha we all have those mountains of grey 😅
Wow this is awesome!
Could you do Blood Angels as well?
Thankyou! 😊 I do plan on making some more videos on other chapters so stay tuned!
Could you either paint blood angels as well or give some advice on painting blood angels in classic style?
Thanks for the video, fun to see!
Thanks for watching, it would be cool to paint all the major chapters/legions eventually! I do actually have a Blood Angels tutorial on the channel in the form of my Epic Rhino video, but I should probably paint an actual marine at some stage 🤣 Blood Angels are an awesome chapter though, so they're high on the list! I'd actually really like to do a Kill Team based on the old Blood Quest comics, but it would be quite a project!
Man, this took me back. The 90s were when I got into the hobby. I distinctly remember all the technicolour glory - and my first visit to the (now long gone) local GamesWorkshop store. Also, incidentally, the point of an arbitrarily clear memory - where, upon my first visit, I got very confused why I shouldn't pick up this one very cool looking box (it was Epic, which was *not* what my brother had gotten into - and thus not what I would). Ended up collecting - you guessed it - ultramarines!... yanno, before moving on to Dark Angels, because green is *clearly* the superior colour.
(look, I was young, impulsive, and easily distracted, okay?)
As for the model? I think you did a great job! You did a really nice job colour matching the old stuff. Just with enough flare to better capture the "idea". I quite like what you did with the blue. As you noted, it's brighter - but it also... fits. Can also attest to your comment on Black Templar contrast. Don't think I've ever used it full-strength.
Incidentally, if you're curious about the earlier paints in GW history, HMG did the first run, and Coat d'Arms (who replaced them) apparently still runs the old colours in their Fantasy range - albeit under different names.
(also, YES, we need more of these retro jobs - 100%!)
Thanks for watching, and glad to hear this took you on a trip down memory lane! 😀 That's always a great response for a video! Interesting you mention Dark Angels, I love their colour scheme, and have been thinking about painting some in the future, so stay tuned! (You can't go wrong with Caliban Green!)
I actually started painting with the GW hex pots, but there were those cylindrical ones before that which I never experienced. Most of my time was probably spent with the dreaded screw tops though, I feel like I still know those colors best! 😊
@@TheHobbyGrotto What can I say? Green's a great colour!
And I remember those hex pots - though the cylinders definitely stick in my mind more. Maybe it's the nostalgia goggles, but I swear they were the best containers GW ever used. I don't remember having half the issues I have with even the newer ones.
But yeah those screw tops were uh... something else lol
They were great, the starter paint set with the hexpots that came with the Bretonnian archer was one of the first hobby things I ever got! I remember the flesh wash vividly! 🤣
Why over black undercoat? Is that for nostalgic reasons as well?
Personally I just prefer a black undercoat 😀 But it also helps establish a nice blacklining look that was prevalent in old paint styles!
90's Ultramarine is the only acceptable version 🙂 The only possible improvement is some hazard stripes, square patterns and small details like that... especially on 90's Terminators 🥰
if not Codex Angels of Death got released :)
Man, hazard stripes are SO good, truly an iconic part of those old school colour schemes! 😁
Are you thining down the yellow much? It seems to have great coverage
I always thin my paints a little, plus I use a wet palette so that contributes too, but I find Averland Sunset has excellent coverage for a yellow 😀
@@TheHobbyGrotto thanks 🙏
Other chapters would be nice but what if you took a modern chapter and tried to capture that 90's Heavy Metal feel even though it did not exist back then?
This is a really cool idea, the 90s heavy metal style is so fun, I'll have to look into some modern chapters, could be good as a collection of different interesting schemes! 😀
It's not Retro if it's on a black primer. Real 90z kidz uses white primers!
