I went to get Bubble Wrap this week and it was ALL gone! .. my son "thought it was for everyone to use" .. he used it all shipping his e-bay video game sales :) LOL
And suppose you dont have your key, but need your pistol? I have some mixed positions on gun locks. There are two paradigms, security and control. Security has no other purpose than to complicate or slow down a theft. Control is another matter and is much more difficult, because if security is too difficult to thwart, you are hampering your own access and conversely we all know that if a 'curious kid' wants in, they will get in. I mean, theres youtube videos of 12 year olds picking high security locks, with homemade and even improvised tools. And kids will break into stuff, just because theyre not supposed to - adolescence is all about boundary testing. I know that by the time I was 15, I could surreptitiously defeat most types of common physical security. The *only* solution to weapon safety, is training and discipline. My first Christmas photo, in my little baby carrier, is right in front of an open, wall mounted gun rack, which stayed there through highschool; and Ive never once got into any kind of trouble with anything to do with guns.
Same here. nothing in my house is locked except my front door. i don't own locking picking tools either. But damn his voice is so smooth is like cutting warm butter lol
I have one like this for my car. Its looped to the base of the seat. It just adds another layer of protection when you cant take your gun with you when you go somewhere. It beats the glove box and the smash and grab crack head. Its not meant as a primary way to store a firearm
My only questions are 1. Why don't manufactures watch these videos 2. Why don't manufactures have a skilled lockpicker on the payroll? That box was about as secure as having the gun under a mattress or in a drawer. Yikes!
The problem isn't manufacturers not watching these or understanding how easy it is to compromise cheap locks, it's that the general public doesn't watch these and buys this crap anyway.
Because most of these companies are large businesses. Large businesses have a disconnect with reality. They base a majority of their decisions on their marketing team. Their R&D team set out to design something, are told that it is too expensive and that it is not marketable and then they come back with a redesign which meets the new criteria and is nowhere near as good as the original design.
I'm pretty sure the person/people who create the actual lock have nothing to do with the purposes where is used. People who designed the box maybe don't understand from locks.
In fairness, that goes back to the general public as well, most people aren't going to spend the extra $50+ for something with a high security lock core, because most people don't understand how terrible the cheap ones are.
Hi LPL. Do you ever get contacted by a manufacture of one of the locks you pick on your channel in regards to either them being mad at you or them asking for advice/suggestions?
He stated this in the finger pad lock video. Unerton ? Or something like that. They sent for his eval and it was brutally honest (as you would guess). The lock had t5 screws on the lock body that completely opened it up and allowed access to the shackle, which was like 3cm thick.
Yes... both. I help where I can, and the few nastygrams I’ve received don’t really phase me. The companies that are big enough to make a credible threat are also smart enough to know that attempts to silence me will have the opposite effect. The Streisand Effect is powerful... as are Anti-SLAPP laws.
The cherry on top of the cake is that the case is so small that you couldn't even fit most gun locks inside. That means that if you pick this horrible wafer lock (and it doesn't seem like rocket science…), you are likely automatically able to use the gun inside.
I love this. I had to break into this case (mother had valuables inside and lost the keys) and being a new lock picker found this was very easy to pick. Found this video and my inflated ego was brought immediately brought back down lol. Love that this safe is as bad as I assumed it was
I have this exact safe, lost the key awhile ago and was getting ready to try to power tool into it and then I thought might as well see if I can pick it! Ive never picked a lock before and fashioned some tools out of paper clips based on what you used in the video. I was into the safe in about a minute. Thanks for saving me a lot more time and effort. I’ll also be getting a new safe soon haha
I've never picked a real lock before (just the real easy ones at escape rooms) and I had given my friend one of the keys to a small lock box I have right before this quarantine thing, the other was locked inside the box... He lives in another part of the state so I had to take matters into my own hands. Thank you so much for this video, took me a couple tries since I didn't have the exact rake but it worked like a charm!!
Seems like it might be worth trying to modify one of these portable gun safes to have a better locking mechanism. If the box it's self is well built, it shouldn't be too hard to secure it with a real lock.
yeah, it won't stand up to somebody with tools trying to cut through it, but then again neither will most things. The bigger problem with that idea is size, one of the reasons wafer locks are used here is because a five wafer lock can be considerably smaller than a five pin lock, so in order to get something small enough to replace it and be secure you'd have to find a disc detainer core, and those tend to be pretty expensive.
oh yeah, I absolutely wouldn't store a gun in this, I think these things are usually bought more as a cheap means of fulfilling legal storage requirements (which tend to be overly broad) than actually securing firearms.
You’re a life saver! And I’m an idiot… amateur lock picker myself and used to mess around with the clear locks and pick sets.. recently lost my keys to my gun safe, exact one in the video… and my dumbass was raking but turning the wrong way!!! After I saw this video and you turning tension to the left I picked it in 2 seconds 😂😂😂 like I said.. amateur
+ElZamo92 Probably not good enough even for that. It might just be adequate to stop a toddler getting its hands on a Nerf gun, but is probably too small even for the smallest Nerf gun.
Reminds me of the early model Ford Bronco that was used as a "jump truck" at an auto auction I worked at in the 70s. Any key that would go in would start it. but a screwdriver wouldn't.
I suspect this type portable safe is most often used in vehicles with cable looped around a seat-to-floor fixture, for situations where its necessary to leave pistol in vehicle. A random smash-window-and-grab-whatever-he-sees thief might not be able to yank the safe out. And he certainly doenst carry a petterson rake and torque tool. I would like to see a 30 second yank test done by someone of average strength......it might well fail.
BlackBuzzzard If smash-n-grabbers have a set of hand held cable cutters, that’s what they’d use. But I agree with your point, this could protect against a quick “crime of opportunity” from someone that doesn’t have any tools.
As I discovered at West Palm Beach airport “security”, it does have some pry resistance. I don’t use it anymore. I use its cable to “secure” a nice Negrini (sp?) case to my suitcase frame when I fly.
After seeing your video I purchased one of these safes anyway and replaced the lock cylinder with a round barrel lock. I feel much better about it. Also, the way I have the cable wrapped around the seat frame under my driver's seat, the safe just comes to the front of the seat and the cable is still under the seat so one cannot get to the cable to cut it. Someone would have to know the safe is in the vehicle and come prepared to remove it from the vehicle, knowing the way in which it is mounted in order to defeat it. Any thief looking to casually break into any car to steal contents, if they break into mine, will not be able to open nor remove this safe. The chances of my car being broken into anyway, while my gun is locked in this safe, is incredibly remote due to the places my car and firearm would be, i,e, no crime areas. Mostly I have it there in order to be in compliance with State laws, but I did improve the security of the lock.
i have an outdoor play pen for pets. it has two latches (no locks) that you just have to turn to open. they're poorly made and even more poorly aligned, so you have to use your brain to spin/turn them into the correct position, and then use force to slide them over. it takes me longer to open those two latches on a play pen than it took you to open any of the gun locks on your channel, and i'm a grown ass adult who's been opening this play pen for months.
You could stick that cable lock through something like a 2x4 so it is not accessible and you would just have to wrap it around something so that it didn't have any length accessible. alternatively you could drill a hole in the back of a drawer and stick the security cable through that then drill holes in the back of the drawer case so that when the drawer is opened all the way the cable is tight or at least like so it would stay under the desk in a top shallow drawer so to cut the cable you would have to get some pliers in behind it and do it blindly with the drawer only partially open. that might work a bit better... I think best of all though would be to just use that hole to bolt it to some thing solid with 2 nuts and bearing on the inside or the hex part sunken into the beam it is through so that it is stuck tightly and directly against whatever it is you have it secured to. you could put that on a bed frame, through a stud in the wall behind of below a drawer in a dresser in those cases I think the hidden aspect would make the marshmellow core more acceptable.
OMG, this is a postbox lock (in Russia we have postbox locks like this, I don't really know what postbox locks in other countries are), even raking with a different key often opens them. But I suppose, this box is not supposed to be left somewhere lockpicker could have those 10 seconds to pick the lock.
Problem is, most people don't even have this small amount of security when securing their EDC pistol, especially in a car. This is still better than leaving a gun in the glove box or trunk unsecured. Any recommendations on a commercially available lockbox that is less than $100 and portable?
If I were forced to use this gun safe, I would drill a hole thru the top and bottom and put a reasonably stout padlock through the holes near the center where the lock resides now. It can’t be any worse that this setup. The way this safe is configured, it is not especially a quick access safe anyway.
Things I've learned from this video: LPL has good taste in firearms. Nice choice on the Sig P229. Things I didn't learn from this video: don't trust safes from Horror Freight.
Off topic question, but I have been wondering (im sure you have a bio or something somewere that i didnt look for ) are you really a lawyer who picks locks? Or are you the guy locks call when they need help?
My guns are locked up in a secure room, with an Ilco Push button lock AND a Medeco Maximum deadbolt .. and the gun them selves are in a safe, (a older large fire safe I got for free) with a S&G 6730 on it ... AND all my kids are old enough, that they have had basic firearms training at the range.
KraKer Killa254 LPL has mentioned on several occasions that he yet to find a product that he would legitimately recommended... so the quick answer to that one is... “there isn’t”
I'm curious if this product just fills a legal niche. for example for transporting a fire arm in some places it must be locked up while in a car. how well it is locked doesn't matter as long as you "need" a key to get in.
LPL, for locks that you want to pass the curious adolescent test, could you see how they fair against improvised tools? I used to show friends how insecure their "locks" were using a paperclip and the metal clip off a ball point pen for tension.
First wafer lock I picked (on an old diskette box), I didn't even know about tensioning and just jiggled a paperclip in the keyway while twisting it. Blew my friends' minds.
I am surprised the box didn't open by itself as soon as LPL picked up the rake. Then again maybe it did and we all thought that it put up a minute resistance being a gun safe.
Bill O'Rourke The hinge pin end points are recessed slightly below the surface of the 15 gauge sheet metal, more-or-less blocking them from being easily tapped out. However, certainly could be improved upon by soldering one end off.
2 quick questions: Can the lock in this "safe" be replaced with something better? I noticed the large hinge on the safe. Can the hinge pin be driven out and the safe opened?
George Bobeck Yes, there are better cores to be had - they tend to cost more than the pistol box. External hinge could be defeated but not without some effort. The hinge end points are slightly recessed below the surface of the 15 gauge sheet metal body. Cable cutters are probably half the other real threat.
I would imagine that this is one of the rare cases where someone with no lockpicking experience could use a bobby pin to open it up. It's even got the rake built in!
I never Picked a Lock in my life, but had some stock that looked like the tools you just showed me, as my keys walked off by themselves it seems, and I had my Lock Open in about twice the time it took you! The number 362 was printed on the lock I had, and it was made by Lockdown. (Exact Same Build as the one you showed here!) I assume it was made in America? Probably not! I bought it new from a Gun Store, 8 years ago! Wished they had More Secure Locking devices in existence? A CZcams Vid saves the day for me, but I am sure many a Thief learns this way, as well! Any recommendation from anyone, on a Non-Pickable type, I can replace mine with, or do they even exist?
these locks are like my bathroom lock basically you have to turn the thing in the bathroom but you cant outside and uh you can litteraly turn the screw outside the bathroom lol

I would drill holes in the case to accommodate a strong padlock and chain, to use along with the cam lock and security cable.
I have one like this for my car. Its looped to the base of the seat. It just adds another layer of protection when you cant take your gun with you when you go somewhere. It beats the glove box and the smash and grab crack head. Its not meant as a primary way to store a firearm

I'm curious if this product just fills a legal niche. for example for transporting a fire arm in some places it must be locked up while in a car. how well it is locked doesn't matter as long as you "need" a key to get in.
John Galt Line Bingo! (It meets TSA requirements)

How is the access to the hinge pin? Looks like another flaw.
Bill O'Rourke The hinge pin end points are recessed slightly below the surface of the 15 gauge sheet metal, more-or-less blocking them from being easily tapped out. However, certainly could be improved upon by soldering one end off.
2 quick questions:
Can the lock in this "safe" be replaced with something better?
I noticed the large hinge on the safe. Can the hinge pin be driven out and the safe opened?
George Bobeck Yes, there are better cores to be had - they tend to cost more than the pistol box.
External hinge could be defeated but not without some effort. The hinge end points are slightly recessed below the surface of the 15 gauge sheet metal body. Cable cutters are probably half the other real threat.
Nice gun.
Nice pick

I would imagine that this is one of the rare cases where someone with no lockpicking experience could use a bobby pin to open it up. It's even got the rake built in!
Watching these videos, I wouldn't use most of these locks to secure my toenail clippings nevermind a gun.
Can you test an abloy lock please
that is just downright scary...
this lock is like me; shake me a little bit and i will spell out all the secrets
I know it's expensive, but can you do a Vaultek pistol safe?
Tom Root It doesn’t take a CZcams video to teach a thief to cut a pistol box cable with a pair of cable cutters.
these locks are like my bathroom lock basically you have to turn the thing in the bathroom but you cant outside
and uh you can litteraly turn the screw outside the bathroom lol
CZcams gave me a notification for video 761 (Thank You) today, saying it was a new upload, but not for this.
harbor freight lol
"theres your problem, lady!"
