  • The Baaka Pygmies are people that live at the edge of the Bayanga National Park in the Central African Republic. They are known for their songs and dances, but also have their own distribution of roles in the tribe: Women dance the Pongo for the spirits, and men risk their life by climbing up the trees to gather honey from wild bees.
Extract from the documentary: “Living cultures - The Baaka Opera”
    Direction: Jean Queyrat

Very limited technology and culture, though. I personally also long for reconnecting with the rainforest, but I would definitely not like having to give up something like the Internet, or the Western music tradition that produced the magical harmonies of Bach. I mean, no offense to their singing, but it's not exactly "masterful", they're for the most part singing quite repetitively with very little harmonic or melodic variation; planning a piece full of well-placed harmonies and melodies, which has a direction throughout, is something that requires considerable skill and craftsmanship, and performing such pieces typically requires practice.
I'm torn between the simplicity of their lives and the good parts of the complexity of civilization (particularly since I strongly dislike the bad parts of the latter).

I always wonder with videos like this, who invites you/allows you to film and give interviews and who does the translation?
This is not the most extreme example but some of the cannibal tribes or hunter tribes it seems so surreal that you were able to go in, get this crazy high quality footage and get their story; I really wanna know what's the process of approaching them to get consent like.

That is one of the main problems why those communities are disappearing: the whole world wanting to visit other countries and regions. So, if you love this, you should leave it alone.

A wildlife refuge is taking a large chunk of the Baaka hunting gathering territory and threatening their way of life. So called wild life guards (simply men from other tribes who consider them self higher status than the Baaka) threaten them on non refuge land as well. Something has to be done to save them. They are some of the last ppl living the way humanity was intended to live. Such a beautiful ppl.
