My kindergarten class hamster had babies and my teacher told us that we had to be quiet and well-behaved because sometimes when hamsters are stressed they will eat their babies. When we came in the next day and the babies were gone my teacher was like “well you guys weren’t quiet enough and you stressed her out so she ate all the babies, I told you that you had to be good…” basically just blamed all of us 5 year olds for the hamster cannibalism and I’ll never forget that shit for as long as I live lol it was devastating

The TMG podcast is the best because of the physicality of the humor, with most podcasts watching the video version doesn’t matter at all, but here you just don’t get the same experience without it.

I think you’re thinking of teddy bear hamsters, which are very small and fluffy. Other hamsters are somewhere in between a mouse and a Guinea pig size depending on the breed.

The hamster thing isn't really "stress eating" like one might go hard on a half gallon of ice cream when their student loan payments just started back up and they haven't received a cost of living raise in 5 years. What they are doing is much, much closer to Noel's assumption of "thinking something is wrong" with the babies, in the sense that it is very common for animals in the wild to kill or abandon some or all of their babies if they sense that their environment is insufficient for raising offspring, and if attempting to do so would threaten their own survival, the rest of the litter, or the survival of the larger group/herd. A lot of mammals can even terminate their own pregnancies at will if their current conditions cannot support additional life, much less one or more lives that are so high maintenance and energy-intensive. Most animals also sequester their dead away from where they live, far from any of their food/water sources, because they instinctively know that potential lingering disease and the biproducts of decomposition both pose a substantial health risk.
Now think about hamsters: most hamster owners do not keep their pets in a proper enclosure that adequately simulates a hamster's natural habitat, so there are very few natural sources of stimulation available to them, and they have almost no agency or ability to be self-sufficient in pursuit of their own survival. The enclosures are often way, way too small and the hamsters cannot adequately roam, dig, burrow, nest, gather resources, etc. like they would in the wild. Their food and water intake is entirely dependent on both just magically showing up in the same spot in limited quantities every day. Hamsters are also often owned by children, who are loud, and handle things aggressively, and are just generally indistinguishable from a natural predator. These conditions are clearly going to induce pretty severe stress in a prey animal who ordinarily spends its life building and navigating through intricate tunnels underground.
When the mother hamster's habitat seemingly lacks the space and resources to sustain any additional life, and there is no room within their enclosure to designate as a burial ground for any offspring who fail to survive, then consuming the offspring unfortunately becomes the most practical and humane option for dealing with them from the perspective of the mother hamster. If it were just stress-induced gluttony, the mother hamster's natural instincts would drive her to eat pretty much anything else before her own healthy babies, and the issue could easily be solved by providing a constant supply of high quality food for her to access at her leisure.
