    Pigeons have higher wing loading than peregrines (less mass per wing surface) and are able to turn sharper. If both birds start from rest, the pigeon will be able to out fly the peregrine with higher acceleration and sharper turning radius.

      Great and informative reply....a rare thing on CZcams. When the Peregrine is able to garner speed from its stoop the pigeon stands a far greater chance of being taken. Around 90% of pursuits end badly for them. I've seen this bird descend at around 200mph and it is a sensational sight

    I used to raise racing pigeons in Arizona and once watched a full on dual between one peregrine falcon and about 12 of my pigeons. I assumed I would lose at least one pigeon but I didn't. If you ever get a chance to see that you will have new respect for pigeons because as shown in the video they are absolutely superb flyers and they instinctively group up and are very maneuvering, especially racing pigeons. I think the only way a peregrine falcon can really get a pigeons is through stealth, once the pigeons are aware they can definitely out maneuver a falcon in the sky once the element of surprise has been used.

      The key I think is height. If the pigeons are at height they are vulnerable as the peregrine falcon can dive reaching speeds up to 390km/hour and launch an attack. At lower heights like this video, perhaps the pigeons are more likely to escape being attacked.

    Peregrines are highly adapted for their preferred high-speed vertical attack, to the extent that they've traded in some of their horizontal speed for the ability to make even faster diving attacks. Gyrfalcons and other hierofalcons are actually very well adapted to the sort of horizontal pursuit the peregrine in this clip attempted. Would be interesting to see how that would go.

    • @canadianperp

    • @sorellman
      @sorellman Před rokem

      There is no such thing as adaptation. The notions of evolution, adaptation, and natural selection have as much basis in reality as the story of creation in the Bible. Think about, we have species living within the same environment, and they are all different. If there was adaptation, why only the peregrines would fly so fast. Species have appeared from day one already adapted. An 18-19th century naturalist by the name of George Cuvier has proposed the more rational theory of fixity of the species. Darwinian evolution makes absolutely no sense, more so in the light of what we know today through genetics about the DNA.

      It kills a few every day. Sometimes as much as 4 (in nesting season). But usually one pigeon is sufficient for the day.
      There are peregrines nesting near our place in Wales, and I've seen the snatching g blackbirds, songthrush, from a building. If the bird is unaware there's falcons in the area, it's curtains for him.

And that is to release as many feathers as they possibly can fooling the predator into thinking it has ceased it's victim. When in reality it's only left with a bunch of feathers this "loose down" if you will that these birds produce upon being seized is a remarkable method for evading predation. And i've witnessed it many, many, times in the field.

    Pigeons are my favorite bird. Everybody thinks that they have no power but they do. You see, every creature has a power. They're the only birds that feed their young milk, they have powerful chest muscles up in their wings which gives them the speed of 40 miles per hour which makes them fly faster than a Peregrine Falcon, and they have the ability to find their way home by looking at the sun and stars, feeling the earth, and by smelling. They can eat human food like cookies and french fries. They can be kinda funny, but you might as well give them a chance. I want to warn you that pigeons poop when they get scared so it makes them feel lighter when flying away from a Peregrine Falcon, so if you scare them well.
