    It takes a special kind of friendship where you can roast each other and just break each other’s balls, and at the end of the day there’s still love and mutual respect there. That’s why it broke Bill Burr when Patrice died. They were like brothers.

    I think it was on Opie and Anthony where they talked to him about his career and how he always self sabotaged his opportunities. He agreed and told a story about a meeting with executives and how he didn’t care how the meeting went.

      Yes, most people i know know him from UFC broadcaster, & from fear factor. More young people know him from his podcast. Almost everyone i know didn't know he was a comic. If anyone knows Carlos Mencia, they should know who Rogan the comedian is (Rogan killed his career, & exposed him i n the comedy world for stealing jokes), though those people are usually older.

    I still remember the day I heard Patrice passed away, because he was in the hospital for several weeks right around my Birthday and then right around Thanksgiving he passed and it was the first time I ever cried over the loss of a person I never actually met. I listened to him on O&A for so many hours, that there was this para-social relationship that forms where you know as much or more about these people on the radio than even some of your closest friends, and they don’t know who the fuck you are.
    I remember the time I met Opie and Anthony at a book signing for Jim Norton’s first book that was the day before their Traveling Virus Tour and it was weird because everyone in the line was talking to these guys like they’ve been friends for over a decade-and they just politely sat there nodding and trying to hurry them along, while clearly trying to mask the fact that they were a little creeped out by it.
    So, not ashamed to admit, Patrice hit me hard when he was gone because he would come on multiple times a week and just riff for 3+ hours and if Rich Vos was on, they way those two used to smash each other was the greatest.
    He used to call Kevin Hart Lil’ Kev’ because he was so tiny, and they used to make fun of him and he came on a few times before he just blew up completely into a huge star and then Patrice would go even harder at him.
    There was a bit that they did on the radio that had me howling, and that was when they were talking about rare animals’ tiny body parts being delicacies and “Antelope Cheeks” came up-so if you go searching for that bit, that’s the term you would use to find it. That was classic Patrice.

    Nate Bargatze is another comedian who tells some good Patrice Oneal stories on Joe Rogans podcast. Nate gives strong Tom Segura vibes but his comedy is on the cleaner side but still hilarious. Itd be a good thing to check out.
    Also Joe Rogan has been a comedian for a long time. Hes just gotten his mainstream attention from Fear Factor and his podcast so a lot of people dont understand that he was a comic first

  • @ProtusMose
    @ProtusMose Před rokem

    About the trial and error stuff, it's absolutely true. Specials are written in hotel rooms and sculpted in small towns. You do a tour and test a new joke in Lincoln, Nebraska. It gets a chuckle, but falls flat. You tweak the setup and try it again night two in Omaha. Now it's getting actual laughs, but there's still something missing. In Kansas city you rework the setup. In Oklahoma city, you change two words in the punchline. By the end of the tour, you've got that joke down solid and it's killing night after night.
    That's why cell phone recordings are discouraged. Your set in Buffalo isn't a polished product. It's a work in progress. You don't want a half-baked set going up on CZcams.

    Mark Twain said " all humor is at someone's expense ". Once you realize that you realize all humor has the ability to be both funny or offensive based on viewpoints. The mark of a great comedian is the ability to convey to you what they found funny in something that isn't actually funny.

    10:00 Patrice passed away before political correctness went off the rails and even though it has eased up some its still far worse than it was when he was still around. It's something they discussed quite often on Tough Crowd, which was an awesome show hosted by Colin Quinn that Patrice, and many other great comedians at the time would be on. If you haven't already, I highly recommend you check out a couple episodes. I think you will really enjoy them.

    If a reporter would’ve asked me why I said something if I was a comedian. I would ask them why they don’t get on stage and tell jokes. Most of them especially if they are a reporter or not shy but wouldn’t get on stage and tell jokes because they are not sure what would be funny and what isn’t the same concern a comedian has but does it anyway. So too act offended over a joke is Ludacris and they know exactly what they are doing and have no reason to be questioning comedians.
