Clear and concise. You saved me an electrician bill. Thank you.
When I changed a light fixture with a 2 way switch I forgot where the red wire in the junction box went and this helped me (it tied into the new fixture's black wire) - thanks!
You are the man! Thanks for all you do! Thought I messed up bad but when you said the wires feed others I knew what to do!
Great simple instructions, solved my problem in minutes, i could not get my head around the black wire not being the "switch" wire
You just solved my issue here at a customer’s super old house 😊. Great video, cheers 🍻
THANK YOU very much for the information. This worked for me. Our house's built in the 60s and we found the 3 wires when we're replacing light fixture, thank goodness for this video.
Excellent!!! Have a 1972 house in northern cali and the florence t lights have this set. Thanks again
I want to install an outlet using the light and saw the capped black and your video answered my question. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I was putting off installing a ceiling fan for months. Just didn't want to deal with the wiring. Thank you!
Thank you the freaking lights are working perfect now :/ took me 2 days of putting up then taking down but all is back to good now 😅
Thank you!
THANK YOU!!! Couldn't turn my new light off. Now I know why.
Just the scenario I had thanks!
Thanks for the info!
Good stuff ,thank you in advance I brought a low profile ceiling fan with light and remote. The motor on item has a black wire labeled "N" and red wire labeled "L" also a thin white wire which appear to be covered over and thin gauged . Coming out of ceiling is blk, white, red
Awesome video. Especially in the current economy with the rising costs of labor and materials and working class incomes not necessarily keeping pace, it's human nature for electricians and DIY'ers to find creative ways to cut costs while providing a high quality and code compliant installation or repair.
Sometimes during a renovation or remodel job, we need to change out an old school pull chain light fixture with constant hot, to a modern decorative fixture, and add a wall switch to control it. Because the NEC as of 2011 requires an available neutral in the switch box to facilitate future installation of electronic switching devices requiring standby power, we need to fish a 14/3 (or 12/3, if the circuits are 20 amp) from the light fixture to the new switch location. The convention is the black supplies power to switch, red is switched, and the neutral is capped off with a wirenut or wago connector if the switch doesn't require a neutral. The old tried and true 2 wire switch loop is no longer permitted in new installations.
And all this time I thought I was dealing with a two way switch...but where's the other switch? There isn't one, because that's not what it is. Thanks! Super helpful.
Good video. I'm new to electrical work.
You just solved my problem thank bubba
Thank YOU!!!!
Awesome video
Oh my God thank you so much You're amazing
Quite helpful! Thanks. Friendly Tip for you if you’re going to make more videos: buy a body mic to cut the reverb from your audio. Not super expensive and they make all the difference.
Thanks
Helpful!!!
What will be happening if i don't connected the red wire or if a capped?
Merci beaucoup
hi can you help i have 3 red wires coming from bedroom light switch its 2 gang 2 of the red wires have came out while i was taking switch of the wall now my bathroom light wont go on i know there connected in some way but dont know where to put two loose red wires
If I run the red to one light and black to another is it possible to use a 3 way switch to control each light independently?
my issues is i have 4 sets of 3 wire coming out only the black wire is hot on one all breakers are on so im so confused should i just connect them all or just delete the rest and use the the only hot one
My light switch have a red & blue on 1 side, and a red on the other side. The new switch that I have ,have 2 screws on 1 side, and a ground on the other. Do I hook it up like it is?(red & blue to the 2 screws, and the 1 red to the ground?) PLEASE HELP
Haven't Read Code by myself yet does NEC allow this in new installation I'm From Canada haven't seen this yet may be see this in Future here not sure if Canadian Electrical code ask anything about this method.
We are from Canada, the code does not permit 3 wire feeds anymore, but it does permit 3 wire legs for switches and plugs, or multiple switch legs for lights.
Dang! No wonder my new light fixtures won't turn off at the Switch.
I wired the black light fixture wire to the 3 capped black wires coming from the Box!!!!
Right?
Thanks ever so much!

I am in an Condo Apartment Building...
It worked! I unhooked the black wire from the 3 black wires in the ceiling Box,
then hooked the black light fixture wire to the unused Red Wire. Light turns off at the Switch!!!!!
The wall plugs are still working. Problem solved!!!!!

legend
My ceiling has 2 black 1 red 2 white and 2 copper grounds- my new light has 2 white and 2 black and 1 copper ground (this is a 2 bulb fixture) do i put the red to the black...im so confused (btw i removed the ceiling fan and replacing with simple 2 bulb light) oh, and now that i took fan down the living room plug dont work. Crazy
How I can connect 3 wires to a remote ceiling fan? There is a red, white and a black coming from the ceiling. I am assuming the red is for a separate switch but I am not sure if I can connect it with the black one just in case I don’t have the remote in hand.
Wondering the same thjng
Me too. I have the same. Three wires only. There isn't another black wire to connect the single black wire in the box
If you have red black White and Coper.
Means black and red are hot
And you have a 14 3 cable for a fan and light
You should have 4 wires, the 4th one being green or bare copper. It should go Red-Black (red goes to your light switch) / white-white / green(bare)-green(bare) and cap off the black from ceiling. If you don't want to use your light switch to turn on the fan or fan lights and just use the remote you could cap the red and go black-black.
I SEEN A FIXTURE WITH BLUE BROWN AND YELLOW/GREEN GROUND HOW COME THEY DONT USE A WHITE FOR NEUTRAL BLUE IS LINE 3 208 VOLTS 3 PHASE SERVISE BROWN IS LINE 1 480 VOLTS 3 PHASE SERVICE THANK
Front line back from the left line
More complicated then needed
I just have black and white
Bingo! I never knew that about the black wire continues to feed other box's. was doing a ceiling fan and got stumped. Thank you
You to buy a GoPro camera all I saw was a light bulb😂😂😂
That's called a multi wire circuit
So you call romex that has 4 wires, grd, white, black, and red, a 3 wire even though there are 4 wires??
Yes, despite the fact that they are called 14/3 or 12/3, the ground doesn't count as a wire
Thank you!
