- In this video, I rank all 13 story mode specimens in the original game of Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion from worst to best. This video is full commentary, and is by far my FAVORITE video that I've ever created as I put more effort into it than I ever have before in a video...so I hope you enjoy it. Thanks again for 2,000+ subscribers!
Disclaimer: I am aware of CZcamsr Wambu's ranking video from 2020 and have watched it only once after it came out. But my video was NOT in any way inspired by his video nor did I use anything from his ranking video for mine. I tried to be as original as possible, especially since my ranking is entirely Spooky's OG based, while his is HD Renovation based.

I am fully aware of this and even knew it when making this video, but included it anyway because a lot of people associate Specimen 7 with the wall of flesh. This is a 30-minute video. There's plenty more to comment about besides THAT. 😂
Also, for the last time...MY VOICE IS NOT AI. It is my real voice. I was reading from a script that I wrote, so that's probably why my voice kinda sounds "robotic" in a way...but c'mon. Is that THAT hard to tell? Without scripts, I tend to stumble a lot...so I wanted to make sure this video was as professional as possible.

@@blazesona12 yeah, Unit 731. I know I didn’t mention it in this video but that was mainly for time purposes. I wanted to focus more on gameplay mechanics rather than lore, but I kinda wish I had explained about it after all.

I didn't know Speciman 4 was inspired by Sachiko. Besides being a ghost child in a school building, that's where the similarities end
Akuma Kira confirmed in an interview once that her appearance and school locale were based on Corpse Party. That’s why I recently made a mod where I turned Specimen 4 into Sachiko. Of course, you don’t want to copy the appearance *exactly* or else it wouldn’t be original. That’s why Kira is a legend, they are able to take inspiration from something and turn it into something completely unique and original.

Specimen 5 is the one I'm most scared of. Idk why, but the imagery and distortion just triggers my anxiety. The description of "Proved extremely effective against subjects with mental issues or weak wills" is pretty fitting in my opinion as I unfortunately have a lot of anxiety and trauma related issues that for some reason this one in particular seems to trigger. I'm not scared of the walking manakin looking thing itself, but when the walls start distorting and just randomly flashing different colours- I mentally can't take it.

Deer lord being effective toward violent subjects implies that he's pursuing you *because* you seem violent. You wield an axe, which is threatening. It's inevitable, but that's the implications I get. I like that part of the catdos actually.

@@TheSpookyKing yeah I saw another video explain that and I actually really liked that because it made a lot of sense and makes me enjoy the deer lord as a character more, personally. I don't remember the video or who made it though, sadly.
@@TheSpookyKing I think the most logical one is that violent subjets are tending to get close to deer lord, and this is something we dont wanna do. If you try to be violent to deer lord, you will die rather quickly.
Some people fail to notice how Specimen 10's theme has some leitmotifs of other specimens, more noticably that of Ringu's theme, you can hear it ever so slightly in the background.
No idea what that implies, but it's pretty cool.

i personally think Specimen 6 is the best either, definitly the most hard, different and dinamic chase in the OG version, its a shame that the Specimen 11, Specimen 4 and Specimen 8 doesn't have a very special chase or a mechanic that makes more hard the game cause their designs and concepts are awesome (Specimen 8's chase in HD version is my favorite tho)

For your top 3 they all have some trait that makes them special, The danger and design of specimen 8, The atmosphere of specimen 11 and the uniqueness and twist of specimen 6

Okay, hope you do the HD Renovation version of this list soon, because let's face it, they got some AMAZING glow-ups, especially in recent years with changes to Specimens 8 and 13 that make them a bit scarier, and especially with Specimen 8. Specimen 8 has uncontroversially the BEST design of any original specimen from a visual standpoint, but it originally had a pretty lame mechanic. It was just the Ringu chase, but slower. However, in a recent update, if the player is behind a wall as the Deer Lord is chasing them, it opens a portal to its own realm, then uses it to travel through the wall at EXTREME speed. Now it becomes a similar case to the Parasite, where you have to remain close to it so that it doesn't get you.

@@dyingstar24 Oh, I'm well aware of Wambu. I love that green Chandelure. However, his video was still made before this one, and there were a few Specimens who received further glow-ups after Wambu's video. For example, Deer Lord was still in the stage where he was basically just a slower Ringu. Now he has a cool mechanic where he creates a portal through walls to close the distance on you faster if you are out of his sight. Due to that, Wambu only ranked him at 3. With that new power, I'm sure that Deer Lord would have made it to Number 2, or even Number 1.

19:54 I initially assumed it would have some adverse effect if you attacked it as well, but then it didn't. I presume the thing it's going for is that Specimen 8 is encountered right after you get the axe but is unaffected by it, so if you try to attack it with the axe, you'll almost certainly get hit. It's really not enough to make up for the lackluster stats no matter how much you try to hit it, though.
Regarding Specimen 11, I heard sometimes when you're about to get killed by him he'd spare you. End the chase and let you think it was all over. Only for you to enter the meat hallway later.
The apparent reason for why deer lord attacks you even if you didn’t hit him nor his deer friends I think is because you grab the axe and maybe he thinks we’re Violent for taking it?
Actually a bit of a Deer Lord tidbit here, from personal experience
If you attack Specimen 1 with your axe during the chase with Deer Lord, it will actually cause you to take some damage. At least when I did it. Now this could’ve just been a glitch, but if it’s an actual mechanic then it would be a cute tie in with the Cat-DOS.
this has never happened to me in OG...could this be an HD exclusive thing maybe?
@@TheSpookyKing That’s odd, I only did it in the OG and I took damage. Maybe Deer Lord somehow got close enough to me to hit me, but that feels highly unlikely given how slow he moves in the OG. Idk maybe I was just taking my sweet time hitting the cardboard cutout of the little pumpkin guy.

Specimen 12 has an insanely clever gimmick in hd renovation: hes literally just like you, but better. Seriously, he has the same stamina bar as you, but runs faster, he has a (comically large) sickle that he found in the same spot you found your axe, but he can parry with it. His only drawback is that he walks ridiculously slow.
Also the entire thing is a reference to the shining as well
Specimen 6 has to be my favorite not only for the inspirations and design but his mechanic is one of the most unique in the game, most of the specimens in story mode and other content like DLC and endless mode mostly just run towards us but we can't run from specimen 6 for the most part, this specimen tripped me up so much when I first played the game.
my favourite part of specimen 6 is how you dont see him move (or at most he just teleports) which was ruined in the hd renovation sadly :(
Ngl, seeing specimen 6 again made me freeze up as it was the root of much of terror and dread I faced when I played this game years ago. I had no idea that I had to look at this thing whenever I encountered it, which led to specimen 6 killing me three times during my entire playthrough (the only other specimen to kill me was the Old Man). Just by watching this video made see that this puppet is even scarier than I thought to the point that I had to pause the video multiple times. It doesn't help that its backstory and death screen are some of most disturbing in the entire game. Words cannot describe how much this thing earned the number one spot on your list, as not only is it the most fear inducing gimmick but also the one that killed most people like myself who played this game.
Fear of Specimen 6 was the reason I waited over a year to play this game after discovering it. He legitimately terrified me. But once you get used to a game and play it so many times, it almost becomes like family. I know exactly how he functions in OG, even the technical stuff as well, so he's very easy to manage. But since a lot of it is very technical, I can understand why people would struggle with him. The biggest issue people have is where and when he spawns in each room, since GameMaker has its limitations. I hope to make a video explaining this sometime.
8 and 4 are my favorites hands down (and not just cause I’m into them). 8 is some kind of demonic wendigo lady/guy with mind control powers who controls hordes of man eating deer.
Then 4 is straight the Grudge girl. What’s not to like? Her whole Vore schtick is unique but otherwise still a cool one as she is just a big reference like the Nurse specimen.

What i love about our best boy ben is the room he's in is decorated by hanging "puppets" silhouette which actually the lost children of the townspeople. That perfectly adds so much horror surrounding him.
pretty sure the "effective against violant subjects" is the reason for the bad ending of the game (due to the dear being the biggest reason to get the bad ending of this game)
My fav is specimen 11, for all the reasons possible; chase theme, design, the food restaurant and lore notes, the mechanic of making doors invisable and everything, and yeah im not and expert of the game but I normally know very well where the doors are :3
Specimen 11 is so cool that The Mansion’s containment measures are completely useless to him.

i agree with number 13. it should be at the bottom because the first time i played the og sjm i didnt even notice him lmfao i didnt even know he was chasing me. he is the most non scariest specimen in the game because you might not even see him lmao

I think Speciment 7 is even more inspired by a boss fight in one of the Final Fantasy games, I don't remember which one, but it's a wall of skulls that advance toward the protagonists each turn, and if he can reach them, it's game over. Very similar to this specimen

@@neondarkgaming334 even though this was a ranking video of my personal thoughts, I still wanted to include basic trivia of where the specimens and their chases were based or inspired from, since all of them were at least inspired by something from either other games or pop culture references. Specimen 7 is so underrated so it deserved to be loved. Haha, I'm glad you enjoy that part. I hope you also enjoyed my cheesy deer puns. 😁
Honestly I still find it so ironic how I feel the exact opposite with specimen 5 and 10, I absolutely ADORE 5 because of just how unique and odd is the atmosphere it sets in, just the thought of being chased by something you can’t win against, but it takes it’s time, because it knows that you have no chance against it, and maybe it doesn’t, but does it matter? You are losing your mind in an endless maze, and maybe, you can take it slow, but at the end, your own undoing isn’t the mannequin, but rather, yourself letting you get consumed by the horrors of the mansion… but yeah, it’s just such a cool scenario for me!
And then there’s 10, I do not have any idea why, but I really hated his chase, I do get why people can enjoy it, but for me, it was just this walk through the park with this stalker following you except that he barely has any power against you, but I know that the reason behind me disliking the chase was just because I felt like there was not much of a rush or any danger, and for me it just got boring… I really enjoy the times where it’s just this feeling of doom and despair, because it truly shows how impotent you are, but with this specimen it really didn’t feel like a chase at all. (For me at least).
Anyhow, setting aside that, I really enjoyed the video! And even if I do disagree with some of the rankings here and then, it’s quite interesting to see your point of view and specially shown in such entertaining and well done way! Well done mate!
Specimen 5 is still a great specimen, and while she is glitchy in OG, I still really love her design and chase mechanic. It was so hard making this list because honestly the top 7 specimens on here could be easily interchangeable. They’re all top-tier to me.

Always been fascinated by specimen 11 since I first saw him and I’m glad to see him getting the love he deserves here. The concept of making something as mundane as a McDonald’s a horror location is so unique and brilliant. You nailed it on the head by describing his room as liminal but before the concept of liminal spaces was well known I always considered it to be kinda surreal and honestly I think that’s why it was always been my favorite. Such a unique monster and location it’s hard not to love specimen 11.
thanks for the comment! Yeah, it always bothers me when I see people bash Specimen 11 as a “lame specimen” just because of his simple design or floating mechanic. The whole introduction area and build-up is what makes him high up on the list and I was genuinely terrified of him chasing me when I first played the game. Liminal spaces are one of my favorite concepts ever, and I definitely feel like Spooky’s OG is an unintentional liminal space game. I love it.

This was a really well made video, better than most top 10s I've seen. Also while I would love to give my ranking, I've only played a *tiny* amount of the OG game. I've only played HD really aside from making an unfinished mod for the OG game that changes the old man into Neighbor Man from the hit 2070 indie game hi nurbur. So my opinion is ivalid here, but I will say 8 is my favorite and the original version of 10 us my second favorite (Why can't I find version 2.7.1 I need my eel boi).
thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed. You should give OG endless a try. It’s a lot different mechanically than HD’s. But there’s just something about the OG art style that makes it feel more liminal and nostalgic than HD. It’s one of the many reasons why I prefer it, despite the many visual glitches in it. I also prefer the majority of the specimen designs in OG over HD’s 3D designs (except for Specimen 3 and 8’s, those models are awesome).
@@TheSpookyKing Maybe I will give it a shot. My "current" HD endless run just ended at 2894 rooms earlier today thanks to a combination of EM specimen 4 and 8, so maybe I could give OG endless a shot.
i feel for bab/specimen 5 i feel like the glitching of rooms really adds to her chase and makes sense since she distorts and creates different hallucinogenic images from the player's mind

Specimen 6 will always be my favorite. He's the one that terrified me the most in this game, and I love his backstory. He deserves that number one spot.
The beef demon once was an owner of the fast food place and he was so crazy that started sacrifising souls to Spooky in order to become a powerful being but Spooky just tricked him and turned him into what he is now.

I agree with Specimen 6 not looking at you makes it really odd and I don't really like it either, I also prefer how he could go through walls/above gaps rather than just teleporting on top of/behind you.
This is a great question. I know I've mentioned it in my 500 subs Q&A video from back in 2021, but obviously a lot of you weren't around at the time. I mentioned that Specimen 6 was my LEAST favorite specimen in HD Renovation...and that still applies today. I really can't stand him at all in that version, and it kinda pisses me off what they did to him. They completely destroyed my favorite specimen, and there's no forgiving that. Aside from what I mentioned in this video, I really hate the fact he teleports after a few seconds even while looking at him. It completely defeats the whole purpose of what he's supposed to be, which is a weeping angel. Sure, it makes more logical sense having him come down from the ceiling and such, but there's something about him spawning in the room after a few seconds in OG that adds to the creepy factor of him. I also hate that they have his laughing sound cue play EVERY SINGLE TIME you enter a new room in HD. It just starts sounding goofy and it gets quite annoying after a while. And above all, his OG design is 2000x better! (see what I did there?)
@@TheSpookyKing Everything I've just read is literal facts. Hell, now you have to look away for about 2 seconds instead of 1 so that he'll move. Everything you've said I agree with, he's (in the og) also my favorite Specimen, and what they did with him kind of rubbed me the wrong way. In older versions of HD Renovation, he looked at you, now he doesn't, kind of a weird change.
Also, I don't know bout this, but is the 3D model in the 2D sprite the same model used in HD Renovation?
@@Xenorvya I think so, but something went horribly wrong and it just looks way off. I know they tried to make him look more like the OG sprite when The Doll House DLC came out, as his previous HD model was even worse (appearance-wise). But I still don't like this one either. But I agree with everything you said in your previous statement. I didn't think the HD devs could make his gimmick even more confusing that it already was, but here we are.
Specimen 10 is a personal favorite of mine. Not because of gameplay because it gets really tedious really fast but instead for the build up for the encounter. The atmosphere,the notes about the location and especially the moment where a note mentions noises in the vents…Then you have to go in the vents…
and not to mention, it's the first area of the game where you really feel like you're in a liminal space. This and Specimen 11's area are definitely the most unsettling in terms of liminality.

I believe that Specimen 9 is actually rng , I got insta killed twice by it when entering a room . Probably spawning from behind or in the door . Man , it's kinda pain ngl
keep in mind that if you're referring to OG, he can still attack in door transitions. Unlike all other incorporeal specimens, he does NOT despawn when you activate the exit door. Once the next room is fully rendered in, he will have despawned.
Ben the merchant, is the scariest spaceman, hands-down (he’s too fast)

specimen 8 is actually so scary. Not talking about OG, I mean HDr. I swear, that phasing animation is literally terrifying. His appearance, Terrifying. His death screen and area? Also terrifying. Lore? Terrifying. So as specimen 6 in my opinion.
Someone said green slime specimen looked like walmart scp-106 somewhere and i can't take him seriously after that💀

(ps, i really appreciate old spookys videos. most of the videos on youtube that i can find are about hd renovation which is annoying when I want footage of the old game.)

I was kindly scared of Specimen 9
Imagine when you cook your tv dinners in the microwave at 3am and you wait for 2 mins and specimen 9 will spawn in the kitchen and rushes at you 0-0 and you try to go hide in the cabinet and specimen 9 using noclip in the cabinet

yeah, I kinda regret not adding info about Unit 731, but I wanted to save time. If I could, I would have gone back and fixed that one, but it's obviously too late now.
You're right, the wall of flesh was technically not an inspiration for Specimen 7, but I still included it since a lot of people make a connection with it.
As far as endless mode, I do plan to make one at some point. It might be a 5k subs special, but we'll see. The earliest it would happen is October...no promises though.

So how would you rank old Specimen 10 if new Specimen 10 didn't replace them. As far as I know unlike OG specimen 3 they actually function correctly despite being unimaginative compared to 3.
I do like old Specimen 10's design, but he'd still be pretty low on the list due to obvious reasons. I'd probably put him at number 11. But if he had been given his own chase theme, he MAY have slipped just a bit higher.
