- A remarkable initiative, 'Project Cheetah', took off in 2022 with a goal to bring back extinct cheetah population. They brought in twenty cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa, which sparked debates worldwide. A glimmer of hope shone when 'Siyaya', a cheetah, gave birth to four cubs in March. Sadly, things took a downturn as nine cheetahs passed away, raising serious concerns. Great video. You showed naturalist Valmik Thapar at 1:02. I didn't watch this interview, but watched another one he had given to Sarah Jacob at NDTV when these cheetahs were brought to India. He had mentioned various reasons why it was a bad idea. A key reason among them was African cheetahs need African Savanaah type grasslands, which have vast open grassland type spaces. Kuno national park with it's forest was never a suitable habitat.
Indeed this whole thing was a giant PR exercise and these cheetahs are paying with their lives.

correction - Asiatic lions were recommended to be introduced to a second place out of Gujrat's Gir forests by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), National Board of Wild Life (NBWL) and other biologists too. It was recommended in order to protect the lions as in the case of an epidemic all the lions may be extinct, so a 2nd habitat is necessary. In Tanzania such an outbreak of disease was there in 1994, as there was a large population of lions so total population was not extinct but situation is different in India, population is already small.
NBWL and central govt. made all the arrangements viz. increasing prey density in Kuno, shifting human population out of kuno forests etc. But Gujrat govt. refused to provide lions when the time to shift was there. Then supreme court delivered the judgment ordering gujrat govt. to provide lions. SC applied doctrine of trusteeship i.e. govt. is just a trustee of natural resources for people, it can't claim ownership. other reasons were also there in SC judgment.
Meanwhile Cheetah reintroduction scheme was also there which was stayed by SC as both the projects couldn't be done at a time and it was high time that lions should be introduced there. Cheetah project was also in dispute, but SC didn't give any opinion on it, leaving it for future, it just stayed it for that time.

You were spot on about the PR agenda behind bringing cheetahs to India. As usual, a lack of attention to detail and a lack of political will is evident behind the deaths of the cheetahs. The tightly fitted collars are visible through the video.
