Many people would love to resign professionally. The problem is the companies act very unprofessionally. You have 30 minutes to leave. Giving two weeks notice was good advice 30 years ago. The places I have worked in corp America have been so toxic that I could only use coworkers as references not former managers. You cant call a firmer company toxic at an intetview. They wont hire you.

They only got 3 days because if I quit they have 3 days to give me my final check.

Pfffffft....A two-week notification is enough. When I quit my last job, I knew it would put the department in a bind because I was only one of two people that had my role. Knowing this, I gave my boss TWO referrals of people I knew looking for work who did the exact same job as I did. He didn't call them. On my last day I also was trying to polish up a training manual for whomever took my place, but they shut down my access before the end of the day. I did all I could, which is way more than they would've done if they were to let ME go.

I gave notice the second I got my interview, both for the referral and the headsup since it was seasonal work and I'd leave right before season. Their referance hyped me up more than my resume and swayed the hiring department who didn't understand why my manager wanted me so badly.
When she told me I was flabbergasted since most of the workplace was quite toxic and did make efforts to keep me. But I'm glad I didn't burn that bridge out of spite.
Then again I needed every edge I could get, having spend most of my 20s in surgeries and rehabilitation, I'm also written up in a disability registry (it's supposed to provide benefits, but most employers won't hire anyone from there except for minimum wage jobs and responsibilities.) I can't afford to burn any bridges.

I'm a software engineer... I've quit in many ways.... normally two week notice. I had boss at one company that I knew if I put two week notice in he'd just tell me to leave NOW. So I kept getting paid by them until Friday... left at lunch and didn't come back. Started new job on Monday. Another time I gave a 2 week notice but the grass wasn't greener on the other side so they took me back. Another company I put a two week notice in. I liked the company but they weren't big in giving raises. My boss came to me and asked why I was leaving... I said it was monetary. They ask if I would stay on and offered 20K/yr more salary on my next paycheck :)

Then the question becomes: If they could pay you 20K more to stay, why did the pay increase only come after you were leaving? Every employer does this, and it's virtually never worth staying. They've shown they don't recognize value and will get rid of you the second someone cheaper comes along.

One of my former employers immediately offered a $20K increase after I gave my 2 week notice, which for a recent college grad at that time was significant. However my new job was already paying me more than the increased salary, and I was a little offended that they could afford to pay me more all this time but refused to until I decided to leave. So I respectfully refused.

  • @cjanquart
    @cjanquart Před 6 měsíci +8

I found a new position that started at the beginning of the month so I was only able to give my former employer (a hospital) one week. During the exit interview he told me "since you didn't give us two week's notice, you're not eligible for rehire." Then the scene from Star Wars (episode IV: A New Hope) where Luke has to see his landspeeder popped into my head: "I'm not coming back to this planet." Was told from my new manager that what they did wasn't legal.
I understand the "don't burn bridges, it's a small world, etc." but the job had no advancement opportunities, very little time off, lackluster compensation, a hierarchy based on how many sets of initials were following your last name and a fairly violent work environment (hospital security). So the "take this job and shove it" applies here.

After 40 years, I am to the point where I am tired of playing the nice guy.

Two weeks used to be the norm and ideally should be the case to prevent burning bridges however lately I’ve heard what tends to happen to some is an employee will send their resignation and then the employer will fire them next day or even same day. That’s not fair and often kills any vacation pay and other benefits.
I also learned the hard way to try and exhaust your vacation before resigning because not all employers will pay that out…legally they’re not required to unfortunately in the U.S.

    • @gaeaw8189

Could you please comment on the more recent phenomenon of companies that retaliate against those employees who do, in fact, give a professional, two-week notice, only to find themselves terminated for giving notice? I had this happen to me recently, only to have it reversed because the company did not have anyone immediately ready to fill the position. It seems more and more companies today are the ones acting unprofessionally, and do so with impunity.

But we had a great relationship (still do) and she was the second person after my husband to learn I had an interview and when I got a job offer. I know this video is for people who are NOT leaving a bad employment situation, but unless the supervisor is truly dangerous, and you need to escape as quickly as possible, I think it still applies. Even if the situation is a bad one, I have found it still makes for a better transition to the new job if you resign and leave on professional terms rather than leaving all your work unfinished, telling everybody what you really think of them, and kicking over the planter in the lobby on your way out the door. The only people you're punishing when you behave like that are the people who are on the same level as you or lower.....including people who didn't do anything nasty to you when you were there. Your now former supervisor doesn't care that some guy or girl who used to work below them thinks they're a sketchball, and the obnoxious people from another department aren't going to come running over to finish up your work or clean up the spilled dirt from the planter. Even if your supervisor is not somebody you could have a real talk with or would want to keep in touch with, it's still best to calmly and politely give notice, then do as much of your work as is reasonable up until the end of your last day, when you clean out your locker or office, say a polite "goodbye," and walk out the door. And even if you seriously don't care about any of those people....word gets around. You don't want a professional reputation as a hothead.

I would love to see videos on the effects that interest rates, election campaigns, and/or tax deadlines have on how willing employers are to hire new talent.
Interest rates and tax deadlines definitely have a huge impact on hiring decisions. I'm most curious to know how much of an impact political campaigns, especially US Presidential campaigns, have on the hiring process.
And of course I'm referring to the hiring process at US based businesses.

I'm in a bit of a toxic situation, Bryan. And I'm also not in very good standing with my employer. Admittedly some of this is my own fault. Though I'm aware that it take two to tango. But some of this advice is helpful. I don't have a linked in. And my only colleague I'd want to stay in contact with and I have already exchanged numbers. I work as a concierge at an apartment building on Monday through Friday nights on the overnight (third) shift. My colleague and I have found it's easier for me to text her when I'm running a bit late or something. I also live and work in Virginia. It's my understanding Virginia is an at will state.

I’m leaving my job because I was injured at work. The state I work in is forcing me to see one of their hand picked doctors. This doc who is blowing off my spinal cord injury is trying to force me back to work and I know as soon as I go back to full duty I’m going to lose my job. My job was threatened because of job performance. I was slowly losing the ability to use my hands and arms as well as losing my balance in the OR. My boss was under the impression I was being lazy. I am unfortunately a very stubborn woman and I forced myself to work up until the point where I felt I may be a risk to my patients. I kept getting harassed and bullied over my shortcomings and it wound up being a terribly toxic work environment.

From day 1, the work environment has been unsupportive, expectations were not set out from the get go, processes/guidelines are have not been clear and i have hardly had any time to get feedback from my manager. I feel like i have been left alone for the past year. Performance reviews are coming up and i wondered if it was a good idea to ask for a raise, even though i already have plans to quit. Would it be worth asking or would it burn bridges and severe the relationship with my employer if i do get a raise and then quit. It’s a small world mind if you think burning a bridge is going to ruin your career. Unless you plan on working for a direct competitor or something of that nature, you quitting abruptly has no effect on your career. It hasn’t for me and I’m doing very well.
