The problem with the “eat until you don’t want to eat anymore” is that your Brain doesn’t get the signal that you’re full until about 30 minutes after you get there. That’s a huge contributing factor to obesity.

And a lot of foods people eat don't make you full. So if you're eating high dense, low calorie foods then it's fine but if you're eating lower density foods if you eat until you're completely full, then you are going to be eating way too many calories. Check our Greg doucette, he has a great approach to a good diet.

@Amilah This is why a combo of nutrient density and energy density from fats and 1-2 meals a day can be super effective. Intuitive eating will never work if you don't correct nutrient deficiencies, carb/sugar addiction, and gut health since gut microbes can affect cravings to be things bad for you, but good for the bad microbes. If you don't fix a lot of issues intuitive eating doesn't work. My diet would seem super restrictive to most, but it's actually very liberating because I've freed myself from foods that were addicting in some way. Besides having overcome addictions to alcohol, nicotine, and drugs besides, I don't take food addiction lightly at all, it's no joke.
Kratom addiction too, it's been a bitch to overcome and I was forced to go cold turkey during quarantine working 2 essential jobs, I was getting 2-3 hours of sleep a night the first week at best. But thankfully following a fairly strict diet(periods of zero-carb carnivore on quality animal foods, and animal-based/targeted keto with some plant foods) for months helped with that a ton, I've had bad physiological withdrawals from kratom in the past, they were mild to nothing this time, the psychological withdrawals weren't so bad either. It was mainly the sleep, lethargy, and adrenal fatigue, still a lot worse than stopping coffee but manageable. I was addicted to excessive coffee too, it helped that at the same time because your tolerance for coffee goes way down, so I don't even drink it most days now, just guayusa tea. Kratom has similar withdrawals to opioids, but while def not as bad, it's not to be taken lightly.
I honestly believe high-carb diets in general cause both phsycological and physiological dependency, similar to hard drugs, refined carbs are like detoxing from hard drugs if you go zero-carb suddenly from a diet high in refined carbs and sugar. Comparing refined carbs/sugar to complex carbs is a little like comparing heroin to poppy tea or kratom, that's how I see it now. I love kratom though and it's helped me more than it's hurt me for sure, can't wait to be over the addiction and to get some again when local stores open. I still drink alcohol and have no issues moderating, not a drop weeks at a time. A good diet and lifestyle actually makes it super easy to do, I'm going to feel so damn great sober when I'm totally over the kratom withdrawals, still only on day 15 and feel mostly there already. That's the longest I've been off kratom cold turkey in over 4 years.

@@joebloggs6922 I really like Greg, despite the things I really disagree with him on. I think red meat is amazing for building muscle and strength, and is full of healthy fats. But that's specifically if you're doing strict keto, he's right that if you're not doing keto it can be a really fattening food, but I think he's kinda overlooking how great it can be for that reason. And then his recommendations for high-fiber high-oxalate foods like strawberries, I get his reasoning, I guess it's not as bad as filling your stomach with a pound or 2 of spinach lol. Unnatural amounts of high-oxalate foods and not enough vitamin K2 is a good way to get kidney stones. I still love Greg, he's not an idiot and is spot on about a lot of things.

People just need to stop having an emotional relationship with food. Being emotionally invested in food, restricting, binging or purging it, is what causes disordered eating and eating disorders. People need to emotionally detach, work towards a new perspective and stop going to “influencers” for permission and reassurance (of their often disordered habits). Go see a professional, and learn to balance both intuition and discipline. Food can be enjoyable and pleasurable without being the love of your life or a coping mechanism.

    • @ijwd424
      @ijwd424 Před 4 lety +9

This!!!! As soon as food stopped being this emotional thing, I pretty much lost the urge to binge and restrict. Obviously I needed help along the way to realise this and it was the key for me to get out of an slowly developing ED. Food shouldn't be emotional, it shouldn't be your comfort or your source of happiness. Most of these accounts I see have such a disordered view on food (the whole "eat an entire bar of chocolate because you're sad haha :)") and it's so harmful. Education is the key to making logical rules about food. Limit junk food and soda, eat more veggies and drink more water. Not "throw everything out the table and eat whatever you want"

I have binge eating disorder. My former therapist (I moved away) has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology with a focus in disordered eating. She also has years of experience with eating disorder patients, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. One of the things that she taught me that has really stuck with me is, "don't get a case of the fuck-its". Essentially, it means that when you're trying to eat well and end up eating something you didn't plan on (more than you intended, or perhaps cookies or something), don't just say, "well, fuck it, I'll just eat whatever I want and start over tomorrow" ( it often just repeats itself like this). This mindset is detrimental to your mental and physical health, especially when you're struggling with an eating disorder. This Caroline Dooner chick is spreading some serious bullshit. She's essentially saying that we shouldn't even bother trying to eat healthy in the first place and just say fuck it from the get go. What profound ignorance! You can't say fuck it to your health! This is also dangerous information for people with untreated eating disorders. Allowing the eating disorder to take over will seriously harm your mental and physical health.

I know a top psychiatrist treating eating disorders who wrote several medical books about the topic and she teaches people to eat normal, "unhealthy" stuff as well, like white wheat. Basically normal stuff available everywhere. You gotta remember that this "fuck it" stance doesn't keep people stuck eating just unhealthy foods. That might be true few days after the barrier being lifted. They actually move on, eat sometimes well, sometimes worse, sometimes not at all because they forgot...and they sleep soundly, potentially are inspired to move or train because they are free of food worry..it's not so bad in the end.

I think this "diet" is directed mostly at those, primarily women, who have struggled with crash dieting and eating disorders. People suffering from addiction to food aren't the target, if they were it'd be totally stupid to encourage intuitive eating, I think the point is to encourage people who feel the need to restrict their food to relax and listen to hunger cues. Obviously, someone who relies on food for emotional support would struggle to identify when they are hungry but for someone else who does not habitually emotionally eat, the freedom to listen to your body and eat all foods that satisfy and nourish it can be extremely beneficial for their health.

When there are no forbidden foods but only the choice what you want to eat, what makes you really feel good, what does provide something good for your body, then you don't need rules. Ultra calorie dense foods are a very dangerous food in the hands of all but the few with the most self control. Still eating more than I should, but at least carrots or broccoli don't make me fat.😂

@@rowennightfall1369 I personally love to snack, too but I do it on lower calorie foods with decent nutrition profiles that fill you up quickly. I like strawberries, blueberries, plain, no butter or other toppings popcorn, etc. I also switched out my peanut butter with mostly powdered peanut butter. Almost as delicious but 80% less calories. If I do eat regular natural peanut butter or almond butter, I spend the extra $ and buy it in these one serving little packets so I am not tempted to over eat it as if it is in a jar, I will just scoop it out. Little things, but they add up and make a difference in keeping things under control. You're right about this pandemic, it is making things much worse.

I have selfmade orange chips at home for a snack.😄 I also like fruits but I rarely crave for them tbh.
Since I almost never eat bread (but if I do, I bake my own) stuff like peanut butter or honey lasts for eternities. Made my own jam two years ago and still have some glasses of it here.
My willpower gets attacked by any kind of sweets, tho. Or cake. So I don't buy them. Sometimes I had the impression that I'm sugar addicted, if I eat anything sugary I want to eat more.🙈 Reduced my sugar intake a lot and this helps.

I love potato chips and ice cream. I still do. I eat chips a few times a year, but I've spent years learning to control my eating. I can count out 15 chips and stop. I can eat a small bowl of ice cream and stop. I don't look at it as cheating. I haven't put on weight except in a bulk phase for years. And actually, this whole covid thing gave me a lot more confidence about my eating because I have kids, so I can't meal prep. I have to eat foods I'd never normally eat and I'm still maintaining. Or actually, I lost a few pounds figuring I'd shred before I can start seriously working out again. I'm limited because whatever protein is available I try to reserve most of it for my kids. My normal intake is 150 g and I'm 5 feet, 107 pounds, give or take. I can't justify eating that much at this point.

I’VE READ IT (kinda) AND I HAVE A RANT ABOUT IT
I got this audio book for free because I mistook it for a comedic book (not my fault I was looking at “skinny food diet: a delicious parody” on google right before and this was suggested).
I gave it a fair chance. I listened to a little over half so ask me any questions you want.
it’s worse than you would think.
How well-intentioned the author is can’t save it from being a major a cringe fest and sometimes Ironically funny.
What makes it worse the author is not stupid (her opinions are dripping with resentment & it’s so obvious they come from burn out after years of intense stress.) and is EXTREMELY caring and well meaning.
Apart of me felt bad for her but I got over it quick since she doesn’t even believe BED / maladaptive binge eating is even a legitimate mental illness/eating disorder. She believes it’s adaptative behavior and *only* the result of restrictive eating (even if it’s only perceived/subjective restriction).
Her “fuck it diet” protocol requires that you must be open to weight gain and not attempt to limit it or modulate your diet accordingly.
Also, NOTHING is allowed to be off limits.
NO not just in the “eat every food group” type of way. NO class of foods, specific foods or specific ingredients can be forbidden. Forbidding food is not allowed on the ‘fuck it diet’
Yes this includes mandatory incorporation of “empty calorie” foods (her admission), unhealthy junk foods, and any food we deem “a bad food” even if we think it’s “bad” for reasons other than it being fattening- like it having negative effects in our body or it only coming from companies we distrust/dislike.
She gives celiacs and severely allergic individuals a pass on this rule but if you decided to go wheat- Free, Dairy-Free, sugar-Free, low-GI, low-lactose, or low fodmap to physically feel better it’s made clear that Caroline believes you should still try to slowly integrate it into your diet again - *even in situations where a doctor prescribed the diet as a medical intervention.*
She encourages people to reintroduce food they eliminated for complex reasons like formally diagnosed intolerances or self diagnosed hypersensitivity because it’s “more likely” that the person probably *made themselves* intolerant to it by restricting it In the first place.
She didn’t give any kind of meat avoider a real pass either. She kinda mentions that if we avoid meats or other animal products we should all “reevaluate” our true motives behind our decision and it’s done in a very patronizing way. I’m not even a fucking vegetarian (nor want to be one) and i felt condescended by that part.
Also she REALLY projects her past issues on to her audience’s eating habits. I think her wasted years of convincing herself she **needed** to be gluten free is part of the reason she refuses to take medical food sensitivities as seriously as she should.
I can tell her projecting is motivated by compassion (idc tho) but she over shares pretty much her entire history of Dieting and adopting diets and how they related to her; life stresses, weight struggles, identity issues, low self esteem/inflated ego issues, yearning for a tight community, impressionability, and suggestibility.
I actually ended up getting irritated each time she brought up her carb-fearing. And i swear I rolled my times EVERY single time the word “paleo” was uttered. BTW she really wants to relate to us by sharing her years a devoted Paleolithic-enthusiast who used grain-avoidance and shopping for sprouted nuts to feel better about the fact that she felt she lacked other decent qualities.
    Like seriously Caroline? IDGAF!
I also couldn’t give a fuck about how eating low-phyticAcid diet made her feel smarter than everyone else for awhile or how she was SOOO mislead by the “French women don’t get fat” diet.
I also now can’t stop associating juicing with pretentiously trying to be more “pure”, “healed”, and “enlightened” than everyone else. - BTW She was into doing those occasional juice-cleanses back in her years of being on perpetual high-carb, low-fat, protein-deficent diet that combined the concept of Rawism with all the dietary components of Veganism.
She’s misused dieting, bonding with diet cults (ie; food moralizers), and adopting different dietary commitments as a maladaptive coping mechanism for most of adolescent and adult life. In the same way she used these things to cope, she also used them as inappropriate tools for forming the core of her self identity and her values.
AND THE ENTIRE TIME I was listening I could sense she was projecting every one of those emotional issues she’s ever used “chronic dieting” to avoid onto her reader’s own eating habits and food issues. No individual is different from her in her mind, she is truly complacent and has tuned out all truths she doesn’t like. If you met her and said something like “I try to only eat whole grains as opposed to white bread & white rice” she’s actually gonna feel sorry for you because she thinks that means your suffering the way she was.
I didn’t finish the book but i think it’s clear that Caroline perceives herself as being enlightened as she is now, and is finally “free” from her obsessiveness, “diet cults” (her words btw), and moralizing eating- simply because she is now comfortable with her weight and ‘free’ of chronic dieting.
The paradox is that Caroline has fully bought into what anti-dieters and the HAES community has to say and cant she is just in another diet cult that has its own code of ethics and ignores all the science they dislike.
She fails to see she STILL uses her view points on eating to feel more enlightened than others and SILL moralizes how she and others think we should be allowed to eat.
And the biggest paradox is that she doesn’t encourages others to say “fuck it” to eating rules. She simply stepped out of the follower position and into a diet-cult leader role because she DOES overly press her readers into following rules - just all the rules are to simply not follow anyone else’s rules (eg. You should eat right before bed because everyone else says not to eat within the hour or two! We need to make a rule that doesn’t allow you to restrict anything because thats the only way we can break everyone’s rules!, New rules about the rules: you should eat IN bed as well and you SHOULD RESTRICT exercise-especially cardio!)
It reminds me of a tenacious teen who is giddy about being in the anti-PopularKids clique, perceives cautious/obedient people as weak or mindless and is thinks they’re enlightened on the grounds that they are rebellious.

I've found a good way to deal with eating too much, or if you wanna lose weight but still actually feel full. I basically fast at least 48hrs between each refeed meal. During a 2 hr window, if it's low carb and not junk, you can basically eat as much as you can possibly stuff yourself with. And you'll lose weight. I eat like 3k cals minimum of meat in one go, and again, the weight still goes down after the food has been digested. Never underestimate the power of eating right. It lets you eat a lot, if you like to do that. I really love the feeling now, of my body being completely empty, and then eating a huge meal. Much healthier than just eating a little bit everyday, as prolonged calorie restriction can actually lower your metabolism in the long run.(see Jason Fung on CZcams, and his talk on fasting)

So for example I love cheesecake so instead ill have a fiber one cheesecake bar as my dessert every day. But I still space my food out so I feel like I'm constantly eating throughout the day rather than sitting down for 3 square meals. I just can't do it. I like to pick a little, go work on a chore or project, pick, work, pick. When I preplan my day using an app I am able to manage my calories so I'm not going over. The f it diet wouldn't really work for me. If left to my own devices I would (and have) eaten an entire cheesecake in one sitting and was still craving more. Also eating until I'm stuffed is bad for my chronic illness. Picking/grazing and feeling satisfied but not full or hungry works best for me.

I only don’t eat foods that make me feel ill. And only eat when physically hunger and stop at physically polite full. For someone that has been binge/emotional/bored eater all my life, I didn’t know what that meant to listening to hunger fullness cues. I had hired a intuitive weight loss coach. Worked on the mental aspect as well. Have tools to prevent me from feeding my addiction with food. The more you feed an addiction, the more power it has over you. The weight fell off naturally when I learned how to listen and honor my body hunger cues. It became natural. After years of losing and gaining large amounts of weight, I found peace with doing IWL. I do see benefits of people healing with certain diets, I applaud all of you that go that route. I am not against anyone doing what is right for them.

And while yes they do say they binge they have never been bringers period they always have a method to compensate for it (restricting calories, overexercising, ect) makes it hard to believe them if you don't come from the same background as them.
