Prats in a flat (with impressive length)

  • Longer and stronger than a roll of Andrex, and about as much fun to stare at for an hour and a half: it’s us! In a flat. Doing stuff. Crikey, even the video description is boring!
    Additional wiffle and disclaimers:
    A couple of people contacted me after the English Kinetic Garden video to say they’d found the Ener-J products to be problematic. That video, and the start of this one where we again use Ener-J stuff, were both filmed on the same day which is why we’re seen using it again without comment. We’ve plumped for the Ener-J gear because that’s what CEF have off-the-shelf, and it’s a case of so far, so good. We’ll have to watch this space when it comes to long term reliability.
    When I talk of LOT 20 around the 5:40 mark, I don’t mean it this legislation was brought in just for storage heaters, more that it’s storage heaters that fall foul of it to a greater degree than other space heating appliances because it makes new units more expensive, harder to control and harder to retrofit.
    The appearance of Jamie “Information Torpedo” at 1:15:40 endorsing Unilite products was a clever deepfake. I’m sorry if it fooled you. In reality, Jamie curls up into a ball and sobs quietly if exposed to Unilite products.

    That small c.u. for the immersion was for something called heat wise I think an off-peak supply was used to power the immersion during E7 hours and you used to push the push to make switch which used to give you a timed (1hr?) peak supply to the immersion (boost)

    • @guffermeister
      @guffermeister Před rokem +3

      You would be correct, It was a pre-smart meter tariff of the 90's that provided an additional amount of boost power later during the day for the evening meal prep and bath. It would have likely been wired in to the top immersion only.

    Lot 20 was thought up by morons.
    I now lovingly treasure four different types of storage heater installed as replacements over 56 years and despise the one Lot 20 heater that was installed in 2020.
    And the one remaining original heater didn't even run to two knobs, it has one rotary knob that ranges from "Min" to "Max".

    You think the manufacturers of those heaters would have considered that a lot of old heaters don’t have a 24 hour supply switch aswell and could have perhaps incorporated a battery powered control
    Unit that charges up on the off peak, to save installers having to run in an additional supply !
    The housing association I work for have done away with storage heaters completely now. If we have any old ones to replace that are beyond repair we replace them with Dimplex QRADs.
    I personally don’t think storage heaters save a great deal of money and you don’t have much control over them, whereas an electric radiator you can just turn on and off as you need it, or programme it to go on at set times.

      Yeah, I had a lot of to and fro with the lady who bought the place on the best way forward as she didn't want to splurge on the expense of that new lump on the wall, but it's hard to know what would work best for the tenant eventually. Perhaps a filled rad would have done the job, but with two other storage units on site, they might have wanted to run the whole flat off-peak.

Luckily the manufactures stickers were still on there and just about ledgable, so I gave them a call, and just with the serial numbers they were able to tell me that they were all asbestos free. They mentioned their late 70's models would have had asbestos, and these were all late 80's models.

I know when you try to update the BIOS it gives all kinds of warnings even though lots of mobo’s have DualBIOS with a previous backup available if the current one cannot boot, and you can just clear the CMOS anyway if you fuck up. Very funny video guys as usual ….. should give you two your own tv show it beats the crap on tv
    And Dave you are so right on all the app crap that is started to be needed to run electrical equipment in the home …. No privacy anymore ….. a well known fridge freezer manufacturer shocked me at a customers house the other week …. Fridge was networked to scan food but when I did a iP scan it’s went off to China …. Looked at terms on App Store for the app and it even tracked customers phone …. People don’t understand how much personal info they give away ….. heating your home is the last thing personal data is first
    What is interesting is look up cleaview AI fine
    You can now check what info and we’re you are or have been
    But again good video ….. only thing I ask is more of them 😊👍

      Persoanlly, I thnk smart tech is fine *if* it's obvious and up-front. I have an Amazon Echo on my desk and I accept the thing is watching and listening, but it has it's uses as a glorified light switch and radio so I keep it there. This stuff sneaking in on home appliances isn't my cup of tea though. Sorry for the slow output of content - these things take a horrendous amount of time to staple together!

    I grew up with NS heating and my Mother (85 years young) has never had any other sort of heating. She’s always used electric heaters to top-up the heating in the evening when it’s chilly out. It’s a pain in arse though, and Gas or Oil-fired wet CH is much nicer. Nevertheless if this isn’t possible (as here) there are suitable alternatives since Lot20. I can’t be doing with those QRad things, so if we’re asked to replace NS heating we abandon the off-peak and install Rointe electric rads instead. The interface is okayish, I don’t know how I’d get on with one at home myself but it’s what I’d do if I had to for myself. The massive upside is that they’re a piece of cake to fit and no additional 24 hour supply (as it’s now all 24 hour) - and no bricks!!!

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  Před rokem

      Thanks for the Rointe tip Matthew. Sounds like they're worth a closer look. I have one NS heater here myself, but no physical switchover as it's all on a tariff basis these days like you say.

    A prevous girlfriend had storage heaters in her flat and she asked me to take a look at the inline "fused spure" as it was very hot, of course it shouldnt have had a fused spure should have been a 20A switch. She got hold of the housing company and they argued it was fine, after explaining the fuse was "HOT!!" an engineer come and changed for another fused spure, I then emailed the company and explained it should have a 20A switch and perhaps it would be a good idea to check the other 70 flats eventualy they changed but we suspect they didnt change everyones. We made sure we had emails with everything in writing!! ( the manufactures instructions also said it should have a 20A switch)
