    I spend 5-6 months a year in Lithuania and the rest in Switzerland. I'm not very good with language yet (it's one of the oldest languages apparently) but my gosh how Lithuanians appreciate you saying something in Lithuanian :) Great spirits! Each visit Vilnius is getting more and more beautiful, lots of constructions going on, lots of good cafes and restaurants. Guys, visit Labanoras and Neringa, those are wonderful. Pure nature. Lithuanian friends usually take me to Labanoras in winter. We make campfire, hike, make coffee, food. They just love nature like no one else :D :) Greetings from Switzerland, coming back in Summer!

    I'm really glad that Lithuania has started to get some of the recognition that it deserves. There's so much more to Lithuania than Vilnius. Take some time to do some research and you'll find lots of lovely places, you will definitely be happy if you love nature . Head to the other side of Lithuania during the summer, along the Baltic coast.

    I love, love, love Baltic countries. If you appreciate kind people who mind their own business, you’ll love Estonians, Lithuanians and Latvians. Don’t be fooled by their distanced attitude: if you need a hand or seek help, they’ll get out of their way to lift you up.
    I had a little contract there for a couple of months. If things were easier to immigrate, I would’ve sell all my stuff and move there.

    So beautiful! In the 1980s I visited the Baltic states. They were still under Soviet control. Most of our time was in Latvia. The contrast of pre Soviet architecture made by craftsmanship and quality, and the Soviet stuff was startling. So many Soviet buildings were crumbling into pieces, then glued together with dripping tar. Absolutely hideous!
    I’m so glad the Baltic countries are free. I hope they stay that way!

    I grew up in Cardiff in the 60s and we had trolley buses. The connecting arms were always jumping off but our trolley buses were double deckers so the driver couldn't re-connect them as the bus was too tall. I'm off to Vilnius in July to my nephews wedding. His future wife is Lithuanian. Appreciate your insight into the city.

      @monikac807 Před 4 měsíci +3

      Being a Lithuanian, reading a quote by a Russian teacher, makes me interpret it differently :) One of the reasons Lithuania got its independence and its life back was exactly because of the immense desire and will to steer away from the soviet guidelines.. there were "sparks", but all was endured thanks to our Freedom Fighters.

    • @neil8238
      @neil8238 Před 4 měsíci

      @@monikac807 Apologies for any confusion. ‘My Russian teacher’ in this context means a British man who was teaching me (also British) the Russian language.
      In informal English, we normally refer to ‘a geography teacher’, ‘a maths teacher’ etc. In the case of languages, ‘my French teacher’ or ‘my German teacher’ would usually refer to the language being taught, not the nationality of the teacher.
      This was a comment about life in general, not the history of the Soviet era. The fact that he was teaching me Russian is only relevant because the UK at the time did not have trolleybuses. When we learned the word троллейбус, the class had a discussion about them and what they were.
      I feel I must clarify because the teacher in question was a decent gentleman who would not have dreamed of saying anything which would be offensive to Lithuanians or anyone else.

    My European vacation days are behind me now, sadly. But as I refuse to fly anymore and going any other way from the US takes too long, well, that's that. However, I have had many wonderful visits and I must say, the East is my favorite. And my favorite place of all is Prague. The old central part of the city is breathtakingly beautiful and walking down the hill into it from the overlook at the government palace brings you further and further back in time to where the Saint Charles bridge crosses the river into Old Prague. Thankfully, Prague was never bombed during WW 2 so the buildings and streets are original and lovely. I missed out on Vilnius and from what I see here, I'd love to visit.
    I can't thank you both enough for filming your trips for us, they're beautifully done and very entertaining.

    Trolly buses are great, they were used in various UK cities until the 1970s including Cardiff where I grew up. If late for school we would use the standard excuse that the trolly bus was “de-polled” which did happen occasionally and would mean the driver having to re attach the pole to the overhead wires. Brilliant vehicles, no idea why they were got rid off.

    Have to disagree with you:- “in UK people wouldn’t take care of their stairways”….my mum and others in her apartment block in Cambridge put pictures up, placed small tables with indoor plants around….etc. I guess other places in UK would do the same. The trolleys are of Czechoslovak origin, Now Czech, mostly from the 80s, I believe over half of them were built specifically in 1986. They still work great for how ancient they are, there is a running joke that the government can't get rid of them because the mechanics know how to fix them so well, but as you probably noticed, they are slowly getting replaced by new trolleys.
    For a while the government even wanted to get rid of them entirely and replace them with battery powered busses, but that never went anywhere and I'm really glad actually. The have a sort of nostalgic beauty.

    Lovely as it is Dalia' was completely baffled as to why you chose to go with the weather so appalling.
    Nope not for us so we're probably going back May time again
    Glad you enjoyed it but it brings back memories of uk winter and tbf l don't tend to reminisce about being freezing cold and wet😂

    I'm old enough to remember trolley busses running on London's streets. They were double-deckers but were beset by exactly the same problem of accidental disconnection. It was the bus Conductor's job to deploy a long pole to reconnect the trailing arm and get the bus going again. Unlike today's busses, the trolley bus was pollution free and also much quieter than their diesel engined brothers.

    I remember the trolley buses from my childhood. They were discontinued sometime in the’60s I think. They seemed problematic in the harsh winters we have as those contact poles couldn’t cope with ice build up on the lines.

      Taurus wine bar’s very nice, but genuinely, every bar and restaurant, and cafe’s perfect. Book a table in the morning to confirm your spot as they can get full. And an airbnb or hotel I. The heart of the old town will mean you’re a 10 minute walk from everywhere🙂

    A hallway like that in Switzerland would be considered a fire hazard and is therefore not allowed. I lived all my 20s (several moons ago) in a Swiss town that had a large network of Trollys and I was facinated by them. Part of that facination is when the sparks fly with all those crackling sounds that accompanies them, that makes me stand with dropped jaw, like a small child.... Notice to Monika - try and get the sparking on camera, and watch it back in SloMo. Best done evenings, as the light fades! I^ve been facinated by the Baltic countries for a long time, especially as I know of a few lituanians, but i've unfortunately never been there... this video has at least got me online looking for possibilities, thanks.
