  • This time a Roland D50: came to me with some weird behaviours: locked up when pressing some specific front panel buttons, sound only when releasing a key... hmmm...
Anyways, got it in full working order again; and learned something as well. Do you want to know what LEGO has to do with it? watch until the end.
Incidental music: Me and my Yamaha Montage, having some fun with Amber Mark's "Mixer".
    Tools used:
    - Steinberg UR22mkII + Audio technica 2020 for voiceover,
    - Sony ZV-e10 as video camera,
    - Manfrotto Magic Arm
    - Editing: iMovie (Easy bits) + Davinci Resolve (difficult bits)

And this is why I like having my D05. Not only does it not contain so much unobtainium, it's also 100% accurate in terms of sound reproduction AND it comes with all the extra patch cards preloaded.

Excellent video and tips. I like synths and have some. Also I have repaired some models, Roland , Kurzweil , and Yamaha. I am from Guatemala.

Just ordered a D50 and saw your channel, it's really nice to see what's inside the D50 and your works!

Great video. I have fully restored 4 D50’s which included the notorious Aftertouch failing. This is due to the copper strip, that runs the length of the keyboard, oxidizing and also the semi conductive rubber strip needing a good clean with acetone and I us d Brasso for the copper. Once this is done the aftertouch is more responsive than new. How is the aftertouch on yours ? Also if my memory serves me right, there is a Pot’ that adjusts LCD brightness.

I don't know if it's relevant, but on my jv880 the screen was dim so i did some experimenting and found that reducing the resistance of the resistor for the led back light brought back the brightness.
I imagine this could shorten the remaining life of the led but i tested it for a while without failure. The d50 may run multiple resistors though which might complicate things.
In the end i replaced it anyway as they are dirt cheap for those if you know where to look and it had a column out anyway.

Fantastic work! So, I'm always curious about the time logged on a major overhaul like this. Did you keep track? I'd love to know the total time spent! ;-)

I do this in the late evening when there is a spare hour available… sometimes I finish a project in 1 hour, more often it lies dormant for multiple weeks due to daytime job and family time… This specific one I started 14th of May and ended 30th of July (according to the dates on the raw video recordings), I think in total 7-8 hours of work?

I'm the one that created the 3D print joystick knob. Unfortunately your colleague is wrong that it is not printable, as I printed it myself for my D-50 on my own printer :-) Of course, it might be that your colleague's 3D printer has different margins (I have a very basic 3D printer though). But I do sell them now on Etsy for basically the cost of producing them, which is WAY below the ridiculous amount of 36 euros that that other company dares to ask for it.

Was only relying on my colleague’s reply and did not investigate further myself… But my Lego version Is cute, isn’t it? ;-)

Hello Reinard, any idea what could be wrong with a Roland V Synth I own. When I turn it on its ok for about a minute, then it goes into a never ending cycle of changing patches, buttons flashing, generally just like its having a seizure. It was perfect for years, just happened out of the blue, thank you!

On first view, that really looks like a power supply issue. I would check if the internal power supply is still ok (check capacitors, bridge rectifiers, if all voltages are within spec, also after being powered on for a while. Be carefully if it’s a switch mode power supply because of the high voltages. If you do not know what a switch mode power supply is please hand it over to an electronics repair person…

Boasting about 4K but the max resolution is 360p only... but hey, congratulations on the repair job! Edit: ok, looks like I was too early and CZcams not ready for this - now it's giving me HD!
