As a child I never understood this movie! I thought of it as a non sense drama but this movie is example of how society tries to bound a woman her body her mind and even the deepest corner of her heart! There were so many scene in this movie that were so amazingly executed. This is the reason why this move will always be forever talked about in year from now. The effort put into the cinematography, the language and right down to the actors/ess who made it all work. Bravo!

For me not only this scene but every bit and shot of this movie was just amazing! Amazingly done by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Another Highlight of this movie is the climax scene. In Which I always had a goosebumps!

2019! I’m so late to this but honestly the courtesan has got to be one of the most powerful roles portrayed in Bollywood. The power of her dialogue, the expressions on her face, and the voice modulation had me emotional 😭and of course that beautiful face❤️❤️
they're are the living legend of Bollywood...both the actresses..no doubt it was wonderful characters in the novel... but it was perfectly played by Madhuri Dixit Nene and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
No. There have always been strong female protagonists in Indian cinema. Chandramukhi is one of them but by no means the best or strongest portrayal of Indian womanhood. One of my favorites is Mother India, made way back in 1957.

A patriarchal society wouldn't care for a new wife's feelings and women were expected to just be grateful for being married in a rich household or simply being married. Her husband was better than most in those times. He didn't ill treat her or anything. He was perfectly honest about his feelings and gave her respect, if not love.
Also it seems he was forced to marry again too. For his children and his house that didn't have a lady to manage it. I don't think he would care to marry of his own choice.
I still don't understand why Paro continued to love a man who couldn't even commit to her or get her the respect she deserved. I understand the depth of first love, but nothing should force a woman to compromise with her dignity.
Read the novel. Devdas is a loser. And why does Paro love him? She's married off to an older man who can't love her. Won't she cling to the one love she knows and idealizes?

@@radha8949 there are 2 narratives, the novel and the movie. In the book Devdas and Parvati are childhood friends whose relationship changes as they become adults but it's Parvati who loves not Devdas. The movie shows both in love. They can't marry for reasons of caste and dowry. When she visits him at night he realizes the depth of her feelings and wants to marry her but is also swayed by his parents. She's married off to an elderly religious guy. So she has no other person who can compete with her memory of Devdas and offer her love. Then there's the romantic notion of first love is one's last love, especially for women! I agree there's nothing to love in Devdas. He drinks so much, in the novel, not for love, but self disgust for being so weak. In a modern movie Parvati would find love again with a better man. In that century, men and women were imprisoned in the cage of caste, wealth, gender, duty.

it's sickening to see how women are treated in hindi movies; i mainly watch them for the music and dance; i guess that part heals the trauma caused by the rest of the movie
+Senjali He actually does but suffers from the typical young-age related insecurities and inadequate appreciation of his love for Paro and he also feels obligated to abide by the wishes of his family. You must definitely watch the whole movie! It is incredibly touching and cathartic.

You do realise this story take place during the 1800s. You need to be a more intelligent, Devdas is a movie about his tragic story: he turned to a drunkard loser who goes to brothel also in a scene where he goes to a Holy hindu river he does his dead ritual with alcohol. He isn't a hero but a total loser..., he causes his own destruction in love as already Paro came to him to run away before but he's the one who didn't agree to run away with her. Also, just to remind you he hit her on the forehead to put sindoor on her forehead... He loves her but he didn't express it the right way as he had his flaws like his ego. Paro was perfect to me just saying lol
