I only heard of Vox Machina because I kept seeing it in the CVs of various Final Fantasy dub actors. This cast is so closely intertwined with their respective characters, and the jokes seem so... untranslatable, that I can't imagine the show having nearly the same "punch" in the alt languages available. But it seems so natural in Japanese??? Thanks for uploading 'cause I've been actually thinking about this a lot! I want to find out if there are any actors who've done each other's dubs XD
Well I'm not exactly educated in Japanese or anything, but as far as I was able to tell the only thing that was really 1:1 translated completely of all the jokes was Grog calling the guy dicknose. Otherwise, I think they made minor tweaks so the things would make sense for localization
@@T0NI_ Anything that helped define the characters they left in as was (though they probably also gave a little background so the dubbing VAs weren’t too off from intent).
It’s a very close-to-literal translation throughout-as proper swears like we have in English (as are used constantly in the show) don’t technically exist in Japanese, the translators went for the absolute rudest forms of Japanese (like, downright offensive), especially for Grog and the thugs. But the pun about “lending Vax a hand” is still (mostly) there, and most of the E-J shifts are played with very light localization to the script. I am very, very curious to see how they handled the Scan-Man.
I finally sat myself down and watched an ep in Japanese and I think it's still really watchable- even with the weird sensation of watching something that FEELS like an anime but with the off-kilter lip-synching I'm accustomed to. I saw some comment somewhere about Percy's voice in the French dub, and I thought that one did a pretty good job too. It's cool to get another flavor out of what's already a great show, and a good way to kill time waiting for season 2.

This and the CastleVania series are perfect in Japanese. The production was made to fit very well... I mean in the case of Castlevania it's funny in the sense that the games and stories are made in Japan to then become part of the English speaking market, and yet the show was made in the US mimicking Anime. So as I said, TLOVM also fits very well in Japanese and the dubbing is superb.

I like this dub. Not because I’m biased or that I’m a weeb. I just think it sounds cool. The English cast did amazing too and they’re the original cast so yeah.
Its available in several languages at the source on prime video. The cast (mainly Taliesin) specifically tweeted about the Japanese dub; how good it is and how cool an experience to have spent a lot of their working lives dubbing anime, to have their own show getting the reverse treatment.
The “v” sound doesn’t exist in the Japanese language, which is why when it becomes “b”. Look at Violet Evergarden for example, whenever someone says her name in the show it’s “Baioretto”
ヴォックス マキナ。 It’s a weird “U” with a diacritical mark to mark a pseudo “V” sound that slides from a “vu” half-syllable to the “oh” second half. Vuokkusu Makina is the closest you’ll get to a romanized spelling.
