- My entry to Obsidian Week is to facet a few pieces of obsidian, including the rare fire obsidian. Thanks to Kyle @WorldofRockhounds for the rough material to work with.

#ObsidianWeek
I'm extremely impressed by watching your diligent process and the mindset needed to find just the right area to start a project such as these. Can't wait to see everyone's creations from Obsidian Week .
Great video! Excellent job explaining your thoughts and process. I thought both cuts looked great 👍
That was fun. And I agree to nothing!! You totally brought up that stone. However, since the others were so much fun to watch I think we'll let it slide. This time.😁
Dang...Faceting with a hand piece.....Super boss mode engaged!!!! Very cool explanation of your process and design solutions, I learnt a heap from this video. Thank you for sharing and those cuts are stunning ✌😎✌
Those look great. I would never have thought to facet obsidian. So cool.
Dr Donohue, this was facet-nating heehee, ty for sharing! I’ve always had an interest in faceted stones and even so, I’m always surprised at all the diligence and forethought that goes into bringing the best out of the material, at the largest possible carat weight! I hope I’m thanking the correct Patrick for this opportunity/great video, haha. Really interested in seeing you work out that idea you spoke of in the end!🤘
That was really cool Patrick! The two different cuts both looked really cool. I have to admit that I much preferred the round cut over the square, but honestly, I don't really like fire obsidian. I mean it's ok. There are just so many other types of obsidian that I prefer more. Rainbow and borealis are my absolute favorites and the different sheens after that. And I won't say a thing! I promise! Thank you for a wonderful obsidian week entry! And the idea of having an obsidian week. I know a lot of this was probably Kyle because he is rather obsessed with fire obsidian but it's good to see you can do a project then move on from it! Thanks Patrick!
I like the look of fire obsidian, but to me the biggest drawback is how finicky it is to see the color, whereas aurora or rainbow really stands out almost no matter the lighting.
Great stuff man! This was amazing! Love your work.
Ok
lol on ending of video
I'm surprised you didn't have more scratches. Those look really cool. I'm still working on my entry. I'll have it soon.
I know obsidian has a reputation with some for being difficult, but I have a decent method for it with my setup and it doesn't give me problems. However, I'm lucky in that my surface area to polish is many times smaller than cabs and slabs!
@@DonohueLabs Did you get/see my entry for Obsidian Week? I've never done tagging or hashtagging, so I'm hoping I did it right. Also, is someone going to make a collection of all the other entries?
@@spetkovsek57 I saw your video because I'm subscribed. To tag Kyle and me in the description, start typing "@DonohueLabs" like at the beginning of your comment here, and it should pop up as an option to select my channel name. If my name turns blue or is highlighted (depending on your OS), then you did it right.
The links you put in your description which I'm guessing were supposed to go to our channels don't work.
You did tag #obsidianweek correctly, so I would have found it from that eventually. I'm saving all the entries to a playlist and will probably make a post and possibly a video in December.
@@DonohueLabs Awesome, thanks for all your help.
Cool have you ever worked with beryl or rose quartz ?I got a bunch I can send you for Faceting. Also I will try to send a video on obsidian hopefully today.😊
I've cut a few aquamarines; the best thing about them is that they take a really nice polish quickly. I haven't cut rose quartz specifically, but I've cut a few types of quartz and now usually avoid it in general.
@@DonohueLabs oh really why? I don’t have the gearloose laps yet just a copper lap so not sure. I did finish a few stones that polished really good there very light pink with no inclusions. When you finish them they kinda glow with light I got a bunch if you want to try some let me know. I only got like 3 aquamarine that I can facet at the mine.
@@Algoldprospecting I find quartz cuts annoyingly slow and is prone to fracturing during grinding (though I tend to have a heavy hand).
