www.savate.tk - BLOG. Excellent method for two sided stick fighting is Jogo do Pau - traditional martial art from Portugal. It derives probaly from old (long) sword techniques. Spiele der Welt
Jogo do Pau does not derive from longsword techniques. It was developed in the mountains in the North of Portugal as a means to defend against wild animals and people while traversing difficult terrain. When Napoleon invaded, it was an old technique, and the masters from the North went to Lisbon to teach people. Even near 1400, Edward of Portugal made a book to teach combat on horseback in Medieval times, and Jogo do Pau was still old then. The art of the longsword actually developed from Jogo do Pau. It's one of the many reasons knights would learn how to fight with a wooden staff, or, as seen in other countries, a wooden sword, before picking up a metal sword.
Funny that you say that lol, i was just watching Montante techniques and they seem extremely similar to the jogo do pau techniques, i actualy though that was the oposit, that the Montante fighting style was adapted to the jogo do pau, aparently i was wrong.
TheAquarius1978 No one knows actually, very few information prior to 1800 on jdp. But yes, the montante from Figueiredo and other authors is very similar to jdp done today by all still surviving traditional groups and written records.
I participated in this championship! In some combats as a jury, and in my class as a fighter...and won the 1st place in sub21 age as the national champion. I would like to see my combats...but it seems they only had interest in the players from this school of Fafe. but then tanx anyway...it is our culture ^^
Very interesting tecnique because it keeps always a great distance from the oponent avoiding the couter atacks that one sees in other stick tecniques aroud the world !
Pena nao ter sido divolgado mais cedo. E serem os estrangeiros à intéressante-se por fazerem reportagens, é muito mais rapido doque 'le bâton français' ou ' la canne'
Where can I find those sparring staffs they are using in the competitions? Onde acho para comprar esses bastões de sparring que eles estão usando para competir?
