Mya: R&B Radio has Gotten Replaced by Trap - It Is What It Is

  • It's been almost 18 years since Mya released her first single "All About Me," and 12 studio albums later, she's still releasing projects independently while engineering her own music. The singer has shown off countless skills through her vocals and dance routines as well as going with the flow during last minute mishaps. In this interview, Mya recalls her DJ missing his flight and how she had to rely on her little editing knowledge to finish her "show tracks." While figuring out how to work on the other side of the mic, she says classes and practice helped her hone her new talent.

The music landscape is completely different now compared to before. We have the Internet, CZcams, download sites like ITunes, streaming sites like Spotify, EDM. Once EDM completely became the new sound and globalized pop music, urban music was never going to be the same. It had to adapt with trap and rappers like Lil Wayne and Kanye West and Drake and Future in order to stay commercially relevant, especially on network terrestrial radio, which is in general fighting for survival in an era of the Internet in general.

Trap music is probably the most repetitive, lazy, and unimaginative form of popular music in history. No one tries to stand out anymore, they all use that same sound. It is so easy, and automated to make now. No quality control. I honestly don't understand how people can hear the same sounding crap all day everyday and still love it..But, to each is own.

Imo trap hasn't been good for a while now. Jeezy, Gotti, Gucci, TI and others time has passed them. Young Scooter was pretty good but he has fell off and I thought the Migos were gonna carry it but what they're doing isn't authentic trap muzik. Plus one reason it sounds the same is because a lot of the pushed trap rappers are from the same parts of Atlanta and other parts of the south so they all have that same style. Then a lot of them put people they know on to help them out (even though they're trash) so its just getting worse. I do like Young Dolph though.

Music serves different purposes for different people over time. You think there won't be something even more lazy and repetitive that the people who like trap music now will complain about in 20 years? There will. There always is. Capitalism will just give people what their base, reptile brain really wants until we are all running around like animals again.

It's sad cause the music business has changed so much...... it's so pathetic that the new upcoming artists like us that's trying to get our name out there and build a brand can't because of all this watered down pop shit they want to make everything into and don't even get me started on some of these "Rappers" they got out..... I say in the next 10 to 20 years, there will be more nicki minaj's and more Drakes killing the music scene.... no more R&B/soul, it will be strictly young kids on the come up with no material getting airplay ruining it for next generations and before you know it, there will be no more music labels left in business. I've counted 4 labels so far not even in business no more. Quincy jones already said there's no such thing as music industry. People aren't even buying CD's anymore. And I don't care that it's entertaining, what's entertaining is what is killing true talent, it's sad and pathetic how business works, they don't respect real talent.

Thirty-five years ago, rapping wasn't really considered a talent then by the mainstream music industry either. The idea of what constitutes talent will always be subjective, except for if it sells.
