Mya: I Was Picked On as a Kid for Being Mixed

  • www.vladtv.com - Mya shares what it was like growing up in D.C., and explains that it was a wonderful blend of different cultures and ethnicities. She adds that all of her art classes growing up were "very versatile as well as multicultural."
    She also opens up about her experiences as a mixed race child going to a predominantly black school. Mya says she was teased a lot by the kids, who called her "jungle fever," but her parents kept her grounded. She admits it would've been difficult for someone who's not strong enough to take the teasing, but she insists that her foundation was solid enough to get her through the tough times.

    Not to take away from her experience, but growing up in the South in late 80s-90s, light skinned girls, especially biracial girls, had it easy. I really cannot recall anyone being picked on for being mixed. It was quite the opposite. They were popular and worshipped even if they were dumb, even if they were mean, even if they had wack personalities, and even if they weren't particularly pretty. As long as they had some non-black features (looser curls, light eyes, freckles, etc) they were coveted.

    • @PatriciaTyler816
      @PatriciaTyler816 Před 7 lety +11

      ocky88
      Those sound like things that mostly would come from males... in which they tend to do with females in general (not all males).
      But yes, I too was not only picked on but, not able to fit in anywhere. "Too black for whites, too light for blacks", seemed to be a daily struggle. I had a "fake friend", who would be nice because I think she wanted to genuinely be friends with me, but just hated that guys liked me or one thing or another (not my fault; I was a kid and actually cared more about having girlfriends rather than being liked by a boy), and in those instances, she would then be really mean to me and even in bathrooms would want to fight me, pull my hair, and all for no reason at all. And this happened A LOT with girls. I never experieced popularity, admiration, or real friendship from girls!!! Maybe this is what was in some of the minds you speak of but, ppl expressed it differently I guess. People tend to forget that, we're all human and have feelings. Not one of us, (humans), asked to be here or chose our race. So, yes, the history with racism AND COLORISM, has plagued this WORLD. Blacks got a really bad deal; Native Americans got a really bad deal (my other half)... people get picked on for many of reason (fat, skinny, dark, light), but bottom line, this was her experience and I can sympathize with her. Being picked on for just being mixed, (when biracial or mixed during a time frame where it wasn't as accepted), WAS a thing. And honestly, she doesn't seem to be throwing a pity party. She's simply stating an experience of hers.
      Now, there is a new level of colorism where society is trying to force standards of beauty to being light, fine hair, etc etc,.... so now, someone darker tends to put down lighter skin to celebrate their own true beauties in their darker complexions. So, there are struggles from all ends. Should a light-skinned person just ignore and disregard their issues bcuz they weren't as bad as another person's? (in that person's opinion). Of course not. This was a thing.
      I think we all need to just reprogram our minds and realize that we are all the same species (human), and set examples to embrace one another and bring each other UP for whatever our issues are or was. There is no need to make debate on whether or not this is valid or whose struggle was worst. It's about one person sharing their experience. Sharing a piece of them so that maybe the next person can gain perspective from another stance.
      Blessing to all...

      Being "worshipped" for something you have ZERO control over is NOT the flex people SWEAR it is. Mixed people know they are being treated differently and they know WHY. Putting down a dark skin girl SIMPLY for being dark skin IS RACIST and SO IS worshipping a light skin girl SIMPLY for being light skin. How is it not crystal clear that BOTH of those attitudes ARE racist AND ANTI-BLACK?!

    2:12 Wtf is she talking about? She sounds like a dumb person putting a lot of effort into trying to sound intelligent. The sun has no effect on skin color (accept if you're talking about tans) and race is deeper than just skin color. Black africans and south indians (i.e. tamils) can have the same skin color, but that doesn't make them the same race.

      Taylor Giavasis That's retarded. So put a black person in a cold climate....and he'll become white in a thousand years? That's a stupid theory, and it overlooks the fact that people with different skin color evolved in the same climate (i.e. eskimos and white people, or blacks and southeast asians). Nonethless, Mya is talking about melanin theory, which is a racist pseudo-intellectual theory made-up by black supremacists.

    • @baller84milw
      @baller84milw Před rokem

      @@rightweaponry908 Nah, you kinda right but kinda wrong. People who are "native" to the regions of the world around the equator produce more melanin. But you dont move to a climate like that and then just magically start producing more melanin. Its a part of evolution and it take tens of thousands of years for that to happen.

    I'm a white guy and I just read about 60 or 70 comments from mixed race people that got picked on. I wish these things didn't happen. The majority of the women I've dated were either biracial or a ethnicity other than white. I always found biracial women to be by far the most attractive women I've ever seen.
    With all of this said my heart breaks for one child in particular. I was with her mother for a while when the child was 3 and 4. I remember my mother warning me to make sure the child has confidence in herself because she will probably get picked on for being biracial. I thought my mom was crazy and thinking back to decades ago. In my eyes anyone that didn't appreciate how incredible, beautiful and intelligent this child was would just clearly be nuts.
    My and the mother went separate ways so I don't know how it turned out, but it breaks my heart to hear other people got picked on in this day and age.
    Now that I'm middle aged I don't see any interactions that where people are getting teased, but I want to be an ally in anyway possible....not only for mixed race folks, but there are so many groups of people that catch crap on the regular...we've got to just start spreading love.
