Mya: I Was Picked On as a Kid for Being Mixed

- www.vladtv.com - Mya shares what it was like growing up in D.C., and explains that it was a wonderful blend of different cultures and ethnicities. She adds that all of her art classes growing up were "very versatile as well as multicultural."
She also opens up about her experiences as a mixed race child going to a predominantly black school. Mya says she was teased a lot by the kids, who called her "jungle fever," but her parents kept her grounded. She admits it would've been difficult for someone who's not strong enough to take the teasing, but she insists that her foundation was solid enough to get her through the tough times.
Mya is obviously raised well..
Agreed 💯👍
“I grew up with both parents in the home, which was a blessing.”
Preach!
She just said the magic word "I grew up with two parents" which explains why she is so grounded and never let the industry eat her alive.
Having 2 parents in the same household doesn't mean sht. It's all about YOU! SHE WAS AN ADULT. U MAKE UR OWN DECISIONS!!! IT'S PLENTY OF MFS IN PRISON THAT CAME FROM "2 PARENT HOUSELHOLDS" LOL. CLEARLY IT DOESN'T MEAN MUCH, NOW DOES IT?!
@@Vasquez.213 You’re correct it does depend on who those parents are… Are they Blackish parents (In my day Brady bunch) or arguing all the time parents who aren’t really on the same page.
She got teased for being mixed I got teased for being too dark. It's one of those self hating traits that's still going on the black community.
mexicans are like that too. The entertainment industry and the society tend to favor "whiter" looking hispanics over the darker skinned or "in-the-middle" skin tones.
@@bacchusendo9032 I was just about to say this too about hispanics
brwnish eyes nah
Listen man IM A LIGHT SKINNED BLACK GIRL AND I LOVE DARKSKINNED BLACK PEOPLE THR DARKER THE SKIN THE SWEETER THE JUICE
Most definitely...
her speaking voice is so soft and she looks so good
I've never heard of this beautiful women before, but holy fuck, it sounds like her voice has been created by mixing candy, honey and teddybear hugs! She has charisma for sure.
True, she's right: everyone gets teased for something. The key is not to dwell on it, and Maya hasn't. :)
I'd take Mya over Beyonce,Rihanna,Nicki Minaj and any other R&B chick any day. She still looks amazing.
Mya sexy but you fucking crazy if you choose her over Beyonce.
I would too. Beyonce looks like she would have too attitude problem but Mya seem like she would be cool people to hang out with. She seems more down to earth.
***** thats because she not dating or married a rapper...lets just pray she wont
she's only 34 no need to say "still looks amazing" i see if she was 50 something lol
King Matthew V lol True but you know there are some 30 year olds that lived that LIFE and look like their 50. lol
"You were made out of LOVE" 🥰
Beautiful words from a beautiful soul.🙂 I love Mya 🫶🏼
Peace and Love to all! 🙏🏻💜
The woman is just explaining how she was treated unfairly like anyone else she is not trying to offend anyone just being honest
JAY JAY BINKS Jamaican and Italian
HER VOICE IS SO SOOTHING & VERY CALMING.
Reminds me of Aaliyah.
I am sorry you were picked on for being simply who you are. You did not choose to be mixed, it was just simply in your genetics and I do not get why people get hate for that. Stay beautiful
She still fine
Word!
+Bianca Lashawn she might be but I never seen a sex tape of her, so to me she's a well spoken beautiful female that keeps most her shit out of the public.
+Bianca Lashawn Doesn't get any better than that.
Melo Drama So? She grown.
Her parents told her that she "was made out of love." #RGM
Stevie Wonder...Isn't she lovely?
just look @ her...she definitely looks like it
Japreme Eloheem laugh my ass that's jungle fever and self-hate

I’ve always loved mya . I was picked on as well but two black parents who had mixed genetics. Teasing just happens to everyone.
So intelligent, she was the under rated R&B princess.
I experienced rage, hatred, jealously and violence from black and Spanish most of my life. Sad most women don't dress or carry themselves like Mya.
Robertson Tirado she deserved it for what her parents did
Not to take away from her experience, but growing up in the South in late 80s-90s, light skinned girls, especially biracial girls, had it easy. I really cannot recall anyone being picked on for being mixed. It was quite the opposite. They were popular and worshipped even if they were dumb, even if they were mean, even if they had wack personalities, and even if they weren't particularly pretty. As long as they had some non-black features (looser curls, light eyes, freckles, etc) they were coveted.
ocky88
Those sound like things that mostly would come from males... in which they tend to do with females in general (not all males).
But yes, I too was not only picked on but, not able to fit in anywhere. "Too black for whites, too light for blacks", seemed to be a daily struggle. I had a "fake friend", who would be nice because I think she wanted to genuinely be friends with me, but just hated that guys liked me or one thing or another (not my fault; I was a kid and actually cared more about having girlfriends rather than being liked by a boy), and in those instances, she would then be really mean to me and even in bathrooms would want to fight me, pull my hair, and all for no reason at all. And this happened A LOT with girls. I never experieced popularity, admiration, or real friendship from girls!!! Maybe this is what was in some of the minds you speak of but, ppl expressed it differently I guess. People tend to forget that, we're all human and have feelings. Not one of us, (humans), asked to be here or chose our race. So, yes, the history with racism AND COLORISM, has plagued this WORLD. Blacks got a really bad deal; Native Americans got a really bad deal (my other half)... people get picked on for many of reason (fat, skinny, dark, light), but bottom line, this was her experience and I can sympathize with her. Being picked on for just being mixed, (when biracial or mixed during a time frame where it wasn't as accepted), WAS a thing. And honestly, she doesn't seem to be throwing a pity party. She's simply stating an experience of hers.
Now, there is a new level of colorism where society is trying to force standards of beauty to being light, fine hair, etc etc,.... so now, someone darker tends to put down lighter skin to celebrate their own true beauties in their darker complexions. So, there are struggles from all ends. Should a light-skinned person just ignore and disregard their issues bcuz they weren't as bad as another person's? (in that person's opinion). Of course not. This was a thing.
I think we all need to just reprogram our minds and realize that we are all the same species (human), and set examples to embrace one another and bring each other UP for whatever our issues are or was. There is no need to make debate on whether or not this is valid or whose struggle was worst. It's about one person sharing their experience. Sharing a piece of them so that maybe the next person can gain perspective from another stance.
Blessing to all...
How do you know are you mixed? And worship by who? Definitely not other girls.
Being "worshipped" for something you have ZERO control over is NOT the flex people SWEAR it is. Mixed people know they are being treated differently and they know WHY. Putting down a dark skin girl SIMPLY for being dark skin IS RACIST and SO IS worshipping a light skin girl SIMPLY for being light skin. How is it not crystal clear that BOTH of those attitudes ARE racist AND ANTI-BLACK?!
She was pretty then she started talking and she got 10x sexier.
Plenty of black women look like mya with 2 black black parents.
Most of those people are recently mixed mgm. I know plenty of people just like that. So that isn’t a good example. Identify doesn’t make that being just black. Most blacks don’t look like her at all
If Someone comes out looking like Mya, and both of their parents are black, then it's due to genetics and recent Mixtures. Both of Tyra Bank's parents are black, but Tyra has a lot of Brittish ancestry, and recent mixture. A predominately black individual will not look like Mya.
malmsteen2013 nah not really
Hahaha
malmsteen2013 no man not west african or black american. Maybe some ethopian and Somalis
Hate racism. My elementary crush was spanish an she so happened to attend a all black school. An all the black girls picked on her. I hated everyone for being close minded
I've been a fan of myas since the beginning! I can totally relate to being picked on by black girls for doing nothing but being mixed race, but I have forgiven them! Women need to start loving themselves and stop the hate and jealousy!
Tiff Sky girl if you don’t get
@BlackWidow u don't know her experience
I was too picked on when I was younger for being mixed. I'm mixed with black and Italian like Mya as well. xox ❤️
Myself as well! My mom there’s a full blooded southern Italian and my father was half West Indian a.k.a. black and half Sicilian❤️ We are unique.!
Girl same, i never really had problems till now though, growing up in the 90's everybody knew i was Black and didn't have a problem. Now people try to tell me i'm "ambiguous" as if that's an actual identity, race, or culture. Soo many mixed race people have contributed and added on to Black culture and i think it's wild how hard some people are trying to erase and alienate that. Love to ALL my Black people❤️🇻🇮🇮🇹
Most of the people excluding you guys are foreigners and bitter AAs. Being half Black American is black enough.
im 100% black so im not mixed race wise but i did grow up in a multicultural house hold with my mother being from the south and my dad coming from Jamaica i had similar experiences with being teased, due to Caribbean culture (dance, music, food, language, ect) but i quickly realized that it came from lack of understanding and being "different" got you teased.
hiitsmeeeeeeeeeee Jamaicans are Africans that lived on the island for many many years
Latoya Gomez um and African-Americans are West Africans who got enslaved, raped, oppressed, and lived in America for many years so..
hiitsmeeeeeeeeeee 👏 thank you for sharing that perspective. Some people lack that understanding u speak of and the ones who don't even want to try to understand it, I find them to be very closed minded.
I'm glad u didn't respond to the comments who tried to clarify what your race was and where it originated... EVEN THOUGH, your first sentenced stated that you were 100% black!!! smh. The ignorance is REAL!!! smh smh smh. Your point was, it was MULTI-CULTURAL HOME ENVIRONMENT!! Which is DIFFERENT to some people, and therefore, could be a reason that ignorant little mean kids would pick on someone for!!!
And the ultimate point was, YES, it's possible that someone, (Mya in this case), was picked on for just being different!!! Geesh!!
Blessings dear...
Jamaicans are Jamaicans , Africa is a continent full of different cultures and different kinds of people , so you can stop the boat mentality
@@ty57404 yeah there is no such thing as "African" culture... Each part of Africa is every unique
There's nothing better than different shades of black woman thank god for the black woman
***** she's not ??than what is she a alien?
Ok that would make her black and white but it doesn't make her not black or not white either
***** and so is my daughter so what is your point
***** that's dumbest shit i ever heard my daughter is black and Mexican and she is taught both culture's if your parents didn't do the same for u is a big shame
***** choose?? How can u choose a culture or race??? Does that make u not the other race u didn't choose just because u said so?? No that would be stupid and un real my daughter is like I said African American and Mexican is she black yes is she Mexican yes that's the beauty of mixed people they are not just one they are both my daughter understands this because I made both cultures important in her life knowledge is strength how could u not know about half of what u are u can't erase it just accept it you're not some new hybrid race of people Dont be stupid but you do have two culture's in you're blood and that's a beautiful thing also u should take pride in what u are all of what u are and ancestors on both sides ....smh
Still fine!...Her and Prince could pass for siblings.
Yes what's funny is she's a Prince fan too
Yes .
if you live in an area where you are demographically outnumbered, then you will surely be picked on.
Black Father and White Mother, Middle Class ;produces the Coolest Mixed Chicks--according to Tariq Nasheed.
Which explains why I'm drawn to this woman's energy and aura....Also Sade
I believe it too...cuz I see it with my eyes...lol
Actually, it's the opposite. Tariq was trying to justify his love for white women.
I loved different cultures growing up. My elementary school had a little bit of everything. I knew how to count and say different colors in Cantonese, Japanese, Spanish and German. Like most mixed kids, I had it bad too. Not for long though. This little dark skinned girl threw sand in my hair. Oooh, I screamed and cried like I was going crazy. I'll never forget what my dad said. He said "Them little chickenheads is mad because they bald-headed and ain't got no home training. You gon always have the advantage over them." They tried me again and my lunchbox accidentally went upside somebody's head. That was the end of that little bullying spell. Now, when are you gon release some music that's worth a damn, Mya?
***** Chile..........
I just think dark skinned girls are jealous mixed girls. Thats why they pick on them. Just my opinion. Check out vids from a guy named Tommy Sotomayor where he explains why they're jealous of mixed girls
Silent Alchemy Please. Tommy ain't said nothin' different from what my father and uncle told me years ago. I'm fully aware of all that stuff and more. Tommy just added comedy to what I originally knew. If you're of African descent and LIVED then you feel him. I think he's funny. I've been watching his videos for over 2 years now.
And you know why SOME are jealous? yo daddy told you, you have the upper hand. dark skins get picked on and talked about because they don't look like you. your daddy was right but the way he said it was wrong, and to be honest I get this feeling of you thinking you are better
Ohhh so your dad taught you that you were better because you’re mixed with curly hair ? And because they’re black they bald headed 🥴🥴 what advantage did he think you would have over him lol? You said this was so much pride like a COLORIST
So gorgeous and intellectual, love her
She sounds so emotionally intelligent from a young age
Love this! As someone with parents from two different countries I embrace both. Multiculturalism is dope.
She is such a lovely articulate well balanced woman
You know what a lot of ugly things can be said to light skinned blacks as well- hate don't care. I to dealt with nonsense for being mixed race. I am so happy Mya survived peoples ignorance and hate. Love you Mya.
Mya still fine as wine
Always thought her and silk would've been a good look together
Her voice tho >>>> 😍😩👌
I had a crush on this mixed chick when I was 13... She was 18... I think she used to like me, too, but I had no game back then... I popped a wheelie on my bike in attempt to impress her... she just stared at me... she always used to stare at me... and I was too much of a lame to holler, because I figured... "I'm 13... she's not gonna like me."
Wow I always thought she was Indian she’s beautiful 😍
I was raised in New York and yes NY bein' the first of the melting pot...I was never picked on for bein' mixed, but I was raised by the black side of the family my mom bein' black and Asian, my big bro and I were raised around the black side of our family...its this school called Explore Charter School a predominantly black school I attended when I was raised NY and I remember kids used to tell me I was not "black enough" I used to "act white" as they would say, I wasn't picked on like called names they just used to say I wasn't black enough or I acted white...when I moved down to Atlanta,Ga thats when I actually got picked on for bein' mixed, but not in NY, but as I grew up I just didn't really care what ppl had to say I'm proud to be mixed, proud to have an Asian and black mom and a Puerto Rican and Dominican decent with white in him dad.
You can tell shes educated. Its crazy how some black people dont even know what melanin is. By the way what is she mixed with
there are many whites and others who do not know what that is either
Black and White !
and indian, hispanic, asian etc...
btw, check out my channel
Eilliot Haynes No...
We don't choose what we are, but we do choose WHO we are, which is more important.
i like the interviews u've been having lately vlad. ever since the donald sterling and everything, the jamar interviews.its healthy to talk about these things, even if they have negative history to it
Mya I #SALUTE you boo, bc ur one of the few left that actually kept it 💯 with ur damn self, still all natural❗❗ Girl u winning lol...and whether u know it or not, ur inspiring a lot of young ladies all over the 🌎❗🙌💪 Keep it up boo😘👋😍
she is beautiful idk why im so attracted to her she was bad when she was little
She's still fine as hell!!!
She definitely was made out of Love
2:12 Wtf is she talking about? She sounds like a dumb person putting a lot of effort into trying to sound intelligent. The sun has no effect on skin color (accept if you're talking about tans) and race is deeper than just skin color. Black africans and south indians (i.e. tamils) can have the same skin color, but that doesn't make them the same race.
Over time it does you idiot. She didn't say anything that was wrong, her phrasing was misguiding.
She said "i know melanin is only affected by the amount of sun you're exposed to."
Taylor Giavasis That's retarded. So put a black person in a cold climate....and he'll become white in a thousand years? That's a stupid theory, and it overlooks the fact that people with different skin color evolved in the same climate (i.e. eskimos and white people, or blacks and southeast asians). Nonethless, Mya is talking about melanin theory, which is a racist pseudo-intellectual theory made-up by black supremacists.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanin_theory
She's referencing the equator which is correct. People around the world close to the equator produce more melanin.
@@rightweaponry908 Nah, you kinda right but kinda wrong. People who are "native" to the regions of the world around the equator produce more melanin. But you dont move to a climate like that and then just magically start producing more melanin. Its a part of evolution and it take tens of thousands of years for that to happen.
I like her. She had great responses and WE COULD UNDERSTAND WTF SHE WAS SAYING.
An intelligent and beautiful woman who was raised by good mixed parents.
I totally understand this my name is also Mya and I'm a mixed girl that gets teased for being mixed
She is super pretty and extremely talented. they need to stop hateing.
In my opinion. The first true, natural Dime. Such a beautiful woman.
DC is not a melting pot...New York is the only one. I walk by a Russian hood and a Dominican hood to go to work.
shes a well spoken nice woman who was willing prime easy pickings for the vultures in the music industry
I'm a Blasian in Toronto, and I got picked on like crazy.
Picking on my Baby but good music like Case Of The Ex,All About Me,Best Of Me Part 1and 2 and Free we need more from you Mya.
Even though DC has a lot of light skinned people,I was teased in elementary school too.
She is very intellectual !!!!😉
Well spoken young lady❤
Beautiful biracial woman. Only mixed and those with recent mgm mixtures look like her. So stop the one dropping
her look is so unique & exotic. mixed people are usually the cutest. bet the kids were jealous of her..
Mya > Beyoncé
I hope no one gets offended by this, but I think muss voice is very similar to Aaliyah's
Yess DC baby, allday!! Love my city!
I was too. I was never expected even by that side of my family. Strange but my polish side of the family didn't treat like I wasn't polish. To them family is family. But yeah mostly the black girls didn't even wanna talk to me. I was sad because it wasn't about them being black I just wanted friends.
We all were mya trust me you weren't the only one .
Mya reminds me why I love D.C. women. Lord
I didnt know she was mixed at all.
She looks pretty mixed
I can believe it. Many were picked on.
I don’t think she age. She still looks the same from 1999 I always thought she was a beautiful women
JAY JAY BINKS I believe Italian/ African American
JAY JAY BINKS I’m positive if you know then why ask me that’s what she said
JAY JAY BINKS i was never a huge my fan although I did love the song she did for rugrats. I was more into brandy and Aaliyah I’ve always thought she was a beautiful women but music wise I wasn’t so invested
JAY JAY BINKS yea growing up you definitely didn’t have the internet to google your favorite artist video you had to wait for it to hit the airwaves. But mya was talented in her own right Aaliyah and brandy and even Brittany spears they just stood out more had more catchy songs I guess you can say
JAY JAY BINKS missy is a rapper tho. If we are talking singers Aaliyah, brandy,Monica, Tlc, Whitney, Mariah Carey they stood out to me back then mya just had the looks not much else
She still sounds hurt about it
she looks mostly black ..and I heard she's half Italian. she's like Mariah Carey just look like a light skinned black person.
Her mom is Italian. Dad is Black.
She has more of a exotic look to me...Morroccan or Algerian.
Jay Dub True. That person was clearly just tripping. She clearly looks mixed. I remember when she first came out and radio hosts were asking her if she was Puerto Rican.
You clearly are thinking about biracial and mgm light skinned people........
@@KingofAloha808 why do people put puerto ricans and biracials in the same category. Not even close. And Mya does not look Hispanic. She looks like a gorgeous biracial woman.
me too MYA me too
Tht because she was fine as a child
I didn't know she was married
Must've been girls teasing her. If any boys were doing it it was from having a crush
Same thing here, then when you grow up, they want to talk to you.
Classy lady!
Got a couple of things to say.
1. I'm darker skinned and I'm glad to say I never really experienced any of this colorism nonsense that goes on in the black community.(thank god) It's 2014 a lot of this colorism, mixing talk is VERY played out. SMH!
2. Mya is a very sexy female. She seems classy but one thing I don't like is she appears to be getting bigger. I love thick females. But to many black women get fat as they age. Keep it tight Mya. Don't balloon up on us.
Good interview.
Mad older cats told me that the light skinned kids would get picked on but now it's the opposite.
the brain is responsible for melanin... actually.. but I love Mya just the same😃
"but" ? "despite the skin tone" eh ? Melodie ,really, Mamita
+Lechiffresix six yep.
All tissues make their own melanin from skin to organs to the sheaths that cover nerves...
+NobodyEscapes Karma sorry you're wrong.
Well put! And agree with her. Respect
She don't look mix never knew 🤔 Sage a whole different story tho damN
Black and white is not a race, their colors.
it depends on where you are growing demographically,,,if you are outnumbered in your area, you are sure enough gonna be picked on.
So does black people. But they don't become pop stars and benifit from it like she did.
Dc is full of culture you Right! ... I WAS PICKED ON when i was a kid.. yes same her being different they will give you a hard time 😣👎..
I'm a white guy and I just read about 60 or 70 comments from mixed race people that got picked on. I wish these things didn't happen. The majority of the women I've dated were either biracial or a ethnicity other than white. I always found biracial women to be by far the most attractive women I've ever seen.
With all of this said my heart breaks for one child in particular. I was with her mother for a while when the child was 3 and 4. I remember my mother warning me to make sure the child has confidence in herself because she will probably get picked on for being biracial. I thought my mom was crazy and thinking back to decades ago. In my eyes anyone that didn't appreciate how incredible, beautiful and intelligent this child was would just clearly be nuts.
My and the mother went separate ways so I don't know how it turned out, but it breaks my heart to hear other people got picked on in this day and age.
Now that I'm middle aged I don't see any interactions that where people are getting teased, but I want to be an ally in anyway possible....not only for mixed race folks, but there are so many groups of people that catch crap on the regular...we've got to just start spreading love.
You can only smash one. Mya or Amber Rose. Who you got ?
Mya. Simple question. Amber is ratchet and nasty. Tattoos and no class. And I need long hair on a bitch
Mya all day son. Yes amber have a body but she paid to look that way. Mya is natural beauty everything on her is real. And you can get know realler then real .
