PNP for less than $300 is pretty good imo 🤔
I love your enthusiasm for the spirit behind the future of RC flying airplanes.
I just built this model yesterday after watching your videos a couple times. I followed your radio setup step by step and have ground tested everything. I can't fly in my yard like you can, so next trip is to the club field for the maiden flights.
Good luck, and you'll LOVE it. We have to get ours back in the air. This is a GREAT plane. HUGE, and solid. You'll love it!
You are the best Brian, educating rc building and flying. Love all your videos. Also thanks to your cameracrue! I learned a lot from your videos!
Looks like a beautiful plane! I know that most cubs fly great, and this is probably no exception!
Will be getting one of these planes and the nx 8 . So this video is gonna be my go-to for this plane! Great video and keep them coming!!
Brian, Excellent instructional video. Bought this plane and had very few assembly and setup issues using the AR620 with the REFLEX thanks to your great instruction. Another way to determine what flight mode the REFLEX is in is when you have the battery compartment open check the LED indicator on the REFLEX itself:
GYRO LED ON- Stabilized mode
GYRO LED FLASHES SLOWLY- Gyro off
GYRO LED FLASHES RAPIDLY- Optimized mode
I love the level of detail you put into your videos. I just bought this plane last week and Im glad I watched this in order to purchase the right transmitter and batteries. I am so new to this and the information you provide is so invaluable. Thank you
Welcome to the hobby! There's lots to learn, but we'll help you get where you want to go!
@@BrianPhillipsRC 🫶🏼 I’m actually on my second plane ✈️ lol. I crashed my Carbon Cub S after 4 flights and took a year off. I’m excited to try it again. You and Camera Crew keep up the great work.
Massive help, just purchased this as a noob, along with the nx8, also highly recommend join a local flying club for help, the info from this has been soaked up, keep up the good work 👊
Yep, the foams are really good as I've just started flying R C Plane myself. buy them and fly them crash them fix them and re-fly them,, But the gas plane made of balsawood are awesome plane too and they sound good too. love this hobby Thanks for all you vids
Large and inherently stable, these big planes do fly nice 😊💯👍
Your CZcams format is working awesome. I have grown to say "let me see what Brian says" before any purchase. Thank you. Also really like that camera crew is becoming way more involved. She is super hot! 😊seriously though you guys are a rock solid team! Thanks for your awsome review.
Love your video and it helps me a lot as I'm new to RC planes. 👍
I’ve missed your last couple of videos but I watching now and catching up as always great content Mate! 👍
Looks great thanks again for the information
Great flight. Looked real smooth and EZ. I bet she flies as EZ as the turbo timber too.
It's not as capable as the Timber, and doesn't have as good lighting package, but very good plane!
@@BrianPhillipsRC could you still do 3d flying with this though? stuck between the turbo timber evo and this plane. both seem equally as nice
Love the look of that plane
buen video gracias por los consejos
great build, unboxing and radio setup, great video
Man u crack me up sum of the best vids on the tube
Love your videos! The only thing is that when you are explaining the radio set-up is that sometimes you go through things so fast that it is hard to follow what you are doing or why. I'm not complaining, it's that I'm new and sometimes it's hard to follow. Thanks for all that you both do.
Yes, it's tough when you're new, since there's 10,000 things to we want to try to cover, and as you can see, our videos are super long anyway, so we try really hard to hit as much detail as possible without making the videos any longer.
If you have trouble, can you try to GEAR icon and set the playback speed a bit slower? Might help. Either way, repetition will help you understand.
Ty so much
?
Brian - I just want to say thank you! I love your channel I watch all the maiden flights and unbox / build / setup / videos. I am new to the Hobby and I have been watching all of your recent videos going back a year . I bought this plane as my first plane and I will use your video to put it together of course. I am setting myself up with everything I will need while I'm away on my work trip. I got the PA -18 Plane, NX-8 transmitter, 8 channel receiver with telemetry, tools, spare parts for the PA 18 and extra batteries with the S2200 G2 AC 2x200W Smart Charger all from Horizon. I got the same plane stand also. I am going to make a portable field box (stanley small rolling tool chest ) also for my trips to the flying field. I think I am all set so far. I'm on my way. I like the new Beechcraft D-18 for a second plane and to grow into it hopefully but I'm not going to buy it yet. I'm taking your advice and flying the PA -18 as much as possible until I get good.
Do you think it's worth getting a second transmitter? I was thinking about a second NX-8 because I want someone more experienced to teach me and I want to have transmitter ready just in case. You also mentioned about squishy tires on the PA 18 - I will look into doing some type of mod to the extra set of landing gear to try it out.
Loving the unboxing videos! Just a side note, (forgive me) I had a $200.00 gift card from Amazon so I decided to buy the DX8 Transmitter and Receiver package. This was going to be my first purchase as a newby to the Hobby. I received the shipment on Friday and although the packaging showed DX8 including all the literature, inside the box was a DXs transmitter. Never again from Amazon! Subcriber loyalty from now on.
We have Amazon links too ;)

Thanks for your sharing
You're welcome!
@@BrianPhillipsRC just watching again so i can set up my spektrum dx7 👍🏻👍🏻
My fms kingfisher had those rock hard tires too! No rocking some dubro , super squishy air tires.
Love the "little bit longer video's" in order to teach us a bit more "how to" info that is not in the manuals. I used to fly RC 30 years ago and are now re-entering the DIGITAL age!
I use the Spectrum SMART batteries and NX8.
OMG - IT WOULD BE FANTASTIC to do an in-depth on the NX8 and radio setup; Digital Mixing, etc.. You do scroll a bit too fast through the menus, etc.. I watched the setup for the Conscendo and AeroScout and would love to have had more "radio setup info". Those are "beginner planes" and therefore more time might be appropriate.
BTW, here is an idea for naming conventions. Have some sort of code that grades the video for Beginner; Intermediate or Advanced. Then you could have "supplemental" videos that cover Unboxing vs Flying vs Setup vs Radio Config.... (Beginners might watch intermediate or advanced flying video's - but they would probably watch everything on unboxing, flying and config of radios).
Give it some thought - LOVE the work you do!
HA - 1:20:35 you did get into radio setup... I would love a deep dive on Dual Rate and Expo - what it is, why it exists and how to use it... FLYING is not my issue since I had flight time in the analog era - it is all the digital radio, ESC and Telemetry stuff.. LOVE the flexibility and capability, but it is ALOT to absorb.
I watched your video on this plane and chose to use it as my first trainer plane,,, I will use the DO_BRO tires that you suggested and can I use an ar631 for a receiver ,,,, from an old disabled Veteran,,,, your videos are helping me out a ton Thank You
Brian, you mentioned Sig Manufacturing. A couple of things. first, they are sold out of about 80% of all their kits, so it looks like that is still going well. Second, you recall when you tried the 6" DuBro air tires and mentioned that they were just REALLY heavy. (1.67+ lbs or 1.1 lbs for the 5", for the pair). Sig has KaVan air tires. The 5" are only 0.52 lbs for the pair. Getting some for Christmas.
Nice!!! I hope SIG keeps on going for another 100 years - sorry if my comments were misunderstood.
As for the light wheels, that would be very nice!!!
Is the Dihedral adjustable? Can one set it up to a flat Wing profile ? Is it needed ?
Just ordered the 3rd plane this year using your links! Hope that helps! When I got the alert today that it was back in stock I had to jump on it! Thx bud! Now stop making videos for awhile, my wife is gonna divorce me if I buy anything else the rest of this year….and it’s only February! 😮👀😂
Great video, thanks ;)
Glad you liked it! Great plane, and hope you end up with one!!! bprc.me/FMS_PA18
@@BrianPhillipsRC Had a hard crash few days ago with STM Turbo Beaver, so looking now for something with some stabilization aids.. 🤭 This FMS model definitely gonna be my next plane 👍
Other than the fms 2000 beaver this would be my choice. . Sadly getting old with minimal socciaal securityy income; my flying days are over.
Oh how much fun I had in my day . Keep up the learning and fun..enjoy your yo, keep up the good work.
1:32:32 You can always drape a bath towel over the prop and cowl. That will hold back the prop incase the aliens possess the ESC and attempt to chop your arm off.
Anyone know what needs to be done with this FMS Cub to get Crow and Reverse thrust? Do we need 8 channel radio or does the ESC/Flex not support those capabilities?
I haven't confirmed, but as I understand, you can take the single additional signal wire from the ESC cable and use it for reversing. If you only have a 6 ch receiver, you can plug the SBUS into a port to get power and have the gyro work on or off only, then plug the single additional signal wire into the gear channel to control reversing. Assign whatever switch you want for reversing. If you have 7 ch or more receiver, you can have all of the gyro options plus reversing. Take this with a grain of salt because I just received my cub and I have only heard that this works for others.
Brian , have noticed in other videos that you keep calling them wood screws , the correct term is - self tapping screws , love your vids
Not sure where I said Wood Screws...sorry. Was this with regard to RTL Fasteners? We do have a self tapping collection from RTL fasteners.
Wood screws are most definitely NOT the same as self tapping. Wood screws have a SHARP tip while self tapping screws usually have a dual chisel type tip, made to cut into metal of some type...
With all the lipos you have we should build you a custom charge case.
@BrianPhillipsRC Since I have a Dx6e and a 631 I could in theory be able to disregard the reflex system entirely and run safe and as3x?
100% - if you wish. The 631 will provide stabilization (AS3X) and auto-leveling (SAFE), OR if you just want to just get your 631 plopped in there, you can use the Reflex for stabilization - your choice, but I would never have access to AS3X (the superior offering of the two) and leave it out.
Thanks for the question!
helló Brian! ezt a gépet építem, hogy létezik az hogy az én csomagomban nem volt benne az uszótalp? köszönöm válaszod.
Does the FMS Cub 1700 have an ESC with reverse? I saw it in video but it is not listed on their website. I like your video about it
I haven't confirmed, but as I understand, you can take the single additional signal wire from the ESC cable and use it for reversing. Great video! You answered a lot of questions I had. I’m a newbie trying to decide on my first plane. I like this one and the maule m7. What is your opinion on the fms reflex vs the spektrum safe/as3x for a beginner pilot?
AS3X and SAFE (both on Spektrum Gear) are very well refined and good for beginners, but REFLEX will be also good too, only just a little more experience would be required to setup the REFLEX. We can help you through the process, so don't worry, you won't know much, but you will stumble through the first few planes, and soon enough, you'll be good without our help ;)
Here's our SHORT beginner list, to help give you some ideas. There are many more too!!!

I noticed watching several build videos that it appears that receiver batteries are no longer used. Is the receiver being powered via the battery pack powering the motor?
Also how does the G2 smart battery pack differ from a non G2 smart battery pack. I always flew gassers so eflight and smart batteries etc are new to me. Thanks in advance for your help.
The ESC (Electronic Speed Control) is what takes battery voltage, and uses a circuit (most of the time) called a BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) to take off the necessary 5, 5.5, 6, 7.5 V or whatever it's rated for to run the Rx, Servos, LED's, Retracts, Gyros, FPV, etc
So...nobody uses them anymore, except in really HUGE electric planes running on multiple batteries and/or multiple electric motors, and gas planes.
I used them on my gassers. My how things have changed. I had a Rascal 110 with a 25cc 2 stroke engine with a huge battery to provide spark for the engine and another battery for the receiver as well as a very large fuel tank. It provided me with hour long flights.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Nice video. I picked this up and was following along. Just to confirm, the receiver doesn't need a separate power supply / connection, correct? The receiver gets power from the servo connectors? Thanks.
My man.
yes ;) Thanks!
Hi i bought this plane with a radiomaster boxer and i have no idea how to set it up
When I am considering purchasing another RC AIRPLANE I go to youtube to check if You have put one together, what modifications You made & how good You have determined it flies & what aerobatic maneuvers You put it through. I RELY ON YOUR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE WITH THE PLANE AND YOUR OPINION OF IT ABILITY BEFORE I BUY ONE.
Love this plane. Would you choose this over the Turbo Timber Evo? Floats are an extra 20 bucks. Hahahaha you said nut sack!!!
This is bigger, but more manageable. Similar plane, but Timber Evo might be a slightly better deal with more robust landing gear, softer tires, and better lighting, BUT I LOVE this plane either way.

Brian, are you going to review the 1300mm version of this plane?
100% working on it NOW ;) Stay tuned - promise not to nose dive it on the maiden - LOL ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC Ha Ha Ha! Too Funny. I didn’t feel too bad for him after he admitted that he knew there was a servo issue and he rushed his assembly as usual… I am very curious as to your thoughts between the 1300mm and the 1700mm. I am going to be adding one of them to the hangar. Right now, I am leaning towards the 1700mm and adding 6” DuBro Pneumatics.
Thoughts?
Keep up the great work!
Hi Brian I enjoy watching you channel. I'm new to RC planes. My question is what is the battery life on the Spektrum NX8 with the included 2000mAh battery ?. I Have brought a AreoScout 2 1.1m for training and also a FMS - PA-18 RTF 1.3m that I are going to put the Spektrum AR620 Receiver in due to your informative channel and influence. Will set them both up on the Spektrum NX8 using your settings. I wanted to buy them all from your links to support you guys but they will not ship to my address so I had to source locally.
Robo from New Zealand ..
11 to 12 seconds of course Brian walks over a punchline missed it now I get back to watching the rest of the video🤣
Flying rc planes is very humbling also but one of the best hobbies to have. How does this plane compare to the 1800mm arrow’s Husky? Another great video!
I like this one better. The Husky Ultimate is 6S and very powerful, but also heavier, and it's got a narrower flight envelope. Great plane still, but this one is a lot more practical.

@@BrianPhillipsRC no,that's ok,keep it up,lol
I'm going to buy this plane and I think I'm going to get a radio master radio just because this will probably be one of my only planes if not the only one and I don't want to spend more on a radio and transmitter than the plane. I do want to add thrust reverse and some advanced aileron functions so I'm not sure if I need more than 6 channels or not or if radio master has all the functionality as note expensive radios but spending more than $500 total is a lot for a toy. What do you think about radio master radios?
If you want ONE plane, it may be a very expensive endeavor.
Plane
Receiver
Transmitter
Charger
Battery
That being said, your second will be an easier pill to swallow.
If you want to work really hard, you can do all this, OR just get the 1.3m RTF (Ready to Fly) bprc.me/FMS_F18 and when you realize you're hooked, you can abandon your Radio Master plan.
If you're brand new to the hobby, I suggest you will waste so much time and get so frustrated that you might not be willing to ever get a second plane, let alone find success with the first. That being said, once you're involved in the hobby for a while and understand things better, Radio Master might be a reasonable option. My concern with Radio Master, is I have no idea how to help you.
@@BrianPhillipsRC the deeper I dig the more convinced I am that Radio Master Boxer is the direction I want to go. 16 channels, $139 for the ELRS which is the latest and greatest with the ability to add a $50 4in1 module so that virtually any reciever can be controlled as well as upgradable gimbal which are already full sized hall gimbal. Also it takes 18650 batteries which I already own or a 2s 6200 battery pack for up to 20 hours on a charge of use. It's open source and way more affordable. Also radio master makes recievers starting at just $10 that have battery voltage readout. They have some more expensive ones that have UART sensor plug ports. Having a radio and reciever for $150 bucks only leaves finding a battery and a charger. I should be able to be all in for about $500. Some of spectrums recievers cost more than a radio master radio. The open source recievers by radio master are so much cheaper which would make future plane purchases more affordable and the 4in1 module would mean I may not need to buy a reciever at all if I buy a new second hand plane for example.
Can I use FUTABA T9CAP Tx and with FP-R138DP or R149DP PCM1024 Rx I am writing from India
I love your videos ,, most of all the way you tweak the factory setting on the radio (fine tuning them)
,, could you put your setting at the end of the video . I know the old guys say you are going to slow and the new guys think you are going to fast but if you post your setting it would REALY HELP US NEW GUYS AND SWITCH ASSIGNMENT ALSO
I know what you're saying, and agree that this would be a good idea. I need to talk to Megan and see if there's a way to do this. Obviously, we can't go back in time, but we TRY hard to show it all...but we kinda end up hiding it in long videos.
Sometimes we show flights out of order, so it can be pretty confusing. Very sorry about that!
@@BrianPhillipsRC THANKS FOR THE REPLY ,, but said info would be priceless to us new to the hobby guys ,,, Love your videos they are helping me out a ton
@@BrianPhillipsRC Maybe make one video with the settings and switch assignment for 3 planes like an update #1. FMS 1700mm Pa- 18 super cub #2. the turbo timber evo 1.5 #3. Eflite T-28 1.2mm these would be a good 1st and second and 3rd plane and the info would be grate for us new guys to the hobby just a thought Thanks
I’m kind of new at this, but I would like to Start with a plane like this , a Draco or my first pick is an Arrows Husky, what say you?I live at about 6-7 thousand feet altitude, 15 years ago, I bought my sons a beginners airplane that did not have ailerons or flaps. It was called a Wingo, it did not have enough power to fly in the thin air. Do you feel this one or the others mentioned would have sufficient power?I flew that plane when I was in a sea level state, just to try it out, it got off the ground and flew a bit, I did not want to break the kids plane, little did I know it was under powered where we live. If I get one, it will be for me, the kids have grown up and flew the coupe.
This plane would be a possibility, but they offer a RTF in the 1.3m that might be a good way to test the waters. IF you don't mind the additional expense, this plane in the 1.7m (as seen in THIS video...but yes we have also covered the 1.3m version too) will be a lot better experience, but still any PNP is a lot of work, and potential for confusion, so plan to painstakingly work through the build with our video running in the background. Be prepared to swear a lot when trying to pause the video, and possibly even throw a few items across the room, as I tell a stupid, unrelated story as you ask perfectly reasonable questions at the computer screen ;) LOL
All joking aside, this would be a good beginner option. I do not have the know-how on altitude issues that you face, but this plane will fly there. It's got tons of power, and you'll be fine with regard to power, I believe.
bprc.me/FMS_PA18 - I highly suggest the 1.7m if you're good with the additional cost of not getting the 1.3m RTF, which will come with all the goodies you need.
bprc.me/4S_2200 + bprc.me/SmartCharger - I suggest S55 or S2200 like we use
bprc.me/AR620 - if you get a REFLEX OR bprc.me/AR631 - if you got it without REFLEX
bprc.me/NX10
