I was at that match. Colin Lee was a Torquay United player and with some of his family and friends we all went up to watch the match. Many years later I was working at Torquay United when Colin came back to act as our manager. Had some great times. Incidentally Frank Prince who was also playing for Rovers that day, was also working with us at Torquay United as their football in the community officer. Funny old game.

The significance of this win was perhaps illustrated come the end of the 1977-78 season. For while Spurs did make an instant return to Div. 1, it was only on goal difference over Brighton. For Spurs final GD was +34, Brighton's +25. In other words, NINE goals ...

I bought an Evening News on the way back from working my Saturday job at Harrods. Saw the score in the Stop Press and thought it must be a mis-print. No Teletext in those days let alone social media. But I'd swap all today's "conveniences" to be transported back to a time when football had soul. Look at those kids standing and the fun they're having.

I was at this game and it was fantastic.
Rovers must have had a terrible defence since we had the two worst centre-forwards that Spurs ever had and yet they got 7 goals between them!
Ian Moores would have struggled playing a game in the park and Colin Lee did nothing after this game.
But i did have a good day out at the time.!Great memories as a teenager back then.

    • @tonybates7870

Yeah, it's funny how both got hat-tricks or more yet neither were heard of again. I went to a few games in that 77-78 Second Division season. We didn't even come top, as I remember, despite a lot of high scoring wins - I seem to recall we were promoted in second place. Oldham and Notts County got trounced by a Spurs team that put five past them both, I do know that.
Whatever happened to that Hoddle fella that scores at the end?

How come this was on Match of the Day? There was a full program of First Division matches that day (including the Merseyside derby). Given they wouldn't have had the hindsight of the result, it seems strange to have sent John Motson to commentate on a Second Division match.
