  • Experience does matter! I see way too many CZcamsrs out there that renovate one or two bathrooms and pretend to be experts in the field. I'm all about new ideas and creative ways to share a story and help people, but if you don't have real life experience, then maybe you should film and share something else. 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇
    I say this because I feel sometimes it's tough to get good advice online, and it's certainly tough to tell who is real, or just pretending. In this video, I demonstrate the best practices and methods to completing and installing tile around a tub surround from years of experience. If you follow my guidance and pay attention, I assure you that you can get professional results with your own bathroom remodel.

    I have been scouring CZcams for months watching video after video of tiling. This is, by far, the most thorough, yet concise video I’ve seen. You show how you did all the crucial parts that make the distinction between proper and professional, and DIY. Like leaving the inside tile proud to work with the bullnose and planning the spacing so not one tile looks like an “oh $hit” afterthought. This is what I needed. Thank you X100. You’re doing God’s work for this anal retentive judgy tile person who’s never done tile but has to do tile.

    Pgh guy here. Love your channel. The question is about ledger board or not. I'm doing a shower. 12x24 tile. Some say stacking off the shimmed base it will kick out vs a ledger then install/scribe the bottom row. I do have a laser. Is the middle ground to use a laser and let the first row dry a day so it won't have issue supporting the weight? Is this all dependent on tile size? Thanks so much.

    Great job Steve
    I’m getting ready to start my walls . Could u show the scribe cut process? Also can you recommend a cheaper reliable tile cutter for ceramic? That ones kinda pricey. ? what laser are you using ? I have a red Leica and hate the red.
    Final question.... on wall tiles 2x6 or 3x6 small (This is shower with no tub) Should I screw a piece of wood to wall through membrane like some to and stack off that. then fill holes and lay bottom row last?
    Thanks Dan

    • @BathroomRemodelingTeacher
      @BathroomRemodelingTeacher  Před 2 lety

      Hey Dan, so I'll try to get something out soon on scribe cutting. But basically you want to be sure you don't use full tiles on first row so you can adjust them. I set laser at where I'd like the first row to be and cut all tiles at the longest point. then use a grinder to adjust cut and get perfect with the laser. It is tedious process, but worth the extra time. If you set the first row nicely, the rest becomes easy. I have the Dewalt green laser. I thought these Huepar lasers are not too bad. Half as much as the dewalt green ones - amzn.to/3nqzpyD. For tile cutters, I need to try more. I like the ruby, iishi cutters. but they are not much cheaper. A lot of jobs for subway tiles, I use the wet saw. cut multiple pieces at a time since they are typically the same on edges. thanks, Steve

      @BathroomRemodelingTeacher  Před 2 lety +4

      Thanks, and working on that right now. I set the night before with a 3/16" trowel. In this particular situation I set all the ditra the day before for floor, and used the leftover Schluter all-set thinset to apply to kerdi membrane and set mosaics. Should have that video ready for Tuesday

    Where can b I get that stand that stand for the laser level?

  • @StraightPineAcres
    @StraightPineAcres Před 4 měsíci

    Solely asking because I’m curious - when you were pressing the tile in the thinset on the right side, the wall was bowing and flexing. Once this is all set up, do you think there would be an issue? Were those studs 16”?
    I’m looking at tiling my tub surround but I know the studs are 2x6 24” oc on the exterior wall. If using go-board, I should probably block it at 16”oc

  • @T-RexArms82
    @T-RexArms82 Před 2 lety

    Looks great Steve! It’s tough to tell time in the video, but how long did it take you to tile the back wall and non plumbing wall? And how long did your pot of thinnest last? I’ve only tiled once and I’m so damn slow that I have to mix it in small batches not to waste it, but I had a real hard time with the consistency of the thinnest. I used 4XLT. You make it look sooo easy!

    • @BathroomRemodelingTeacher
      @BathroomRemodelingTeacher  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks Bobby, So if you are taking a bit of time, I definitely recommend trying to get some Ardex thinsets. They have the longest pot life of any thinset I've used. Typically 4 hours if its not too dry or hot out. On this tub surround I did the back wall and non plumbing wall in a 6 hour period. Back wall before lunch, and non plumbing wall an hour or two after. Took about a bag and half of Ardex X5 for those sections. If you mix things to proper ratios of water and mix for the full 2 minutes, you'll get the best consistency and pot life. After lunch I do spin the thinset (Do NOT add water). this gets it back to a spreadable consistency. 👍

    So if your first row isn’t level, then you’ll make custom cuts starting from your lowest spot??

  • @donproctor3445
    @donproctor3445 Před 2 lety

    does trowel groove direction matter? I will be using 12 x 24 tiles. Love the idea of presetting mosaic. I'm thinking of doing a 12" wide tub to ceiling insert centered on the plumbing wall fixtures. I assume I can cut the tile after it dries to square up the edges? I'm using porcelain tile over Wedi board. What thinset do you recommend?

    • @BathroomRemodelingTeacher
      @BathroomRemodelingTeacher  Před 2 lety

      Trowel direction isn’t super important, but going with the short side of tile can be more efficient. No problem cutting mosaics after they are set on membrane and ardex x5 is what I primarily use 👍

    • @donproctor3445
      @donproctor3445 Před 2 lety

      @@BathroomRemodelingTeacher Something I just thought of. When you pre-install mosaic on fabric doesn't this increase thickness? tile+thinset+more thinset when installed? Now thicker than wall tile?

  • @Methodical2
    @Methodical2 Před 2 lety +1

    Question. If you install a wood baseboard do you bring the bullnose tile to the floor or to the top of the wood baseboard.

    • @BathroomRemodelingTeacher
      @BathroomRemodelingTeacher  Před 2 lety

      I typically tile to floor and then butt trim to the bull nose. It’s personal preference, either way works, but I think it’s better having the tile against tub rather than the wood trim. 👍

    bulnose lines up in certain places but doesnt line up in others, it would of looked a lot better not lining up on the side walls. destroyed plumbing wall by installing bulnose for niche on the main wall instead of the returns (nobody would of noticed a double cut on the inside. hi and low tiles look bad at the end once grouted and its because you dont spend the time and trowel consistently , especially when spreading against a previous row, as your leaving a bit extra against previous row of tile. mosiac border a bit wonky in the corners. dry cutting in the shower, not good and its a shame how messy your tools are. if i went into a doctors office and seen dirty tools i would run. you literally have dried up thin set on every tool you own, thats just a messy installer. if you like to show people how to do this, it should be done right . just cant stand seeing hack installers do videos..
