  • Paul components makes botique, high-end components out of his machine shop in Chico, CA. For years, people have turned to Paul Components for custom builds and long-lasting parts. There's something special about a part that was machined from a hunk of raw aluminum. In this video we take a first look at the Klamper, the Canti Lever, and the Boxcar stem. It's pretty rare to come across components built this solid these days. I fully expect these brakes to be working perfectly in 20 years time. Learn more about these brakes here: bit.ly/3rgZY8u

      I've been running short pull clampers and getting *very* close to Code RSC performance with a couple of simple changes...upgraded the housing to Yokozuna Reaction cable housing. Then swapped out the stock pads with Swiss Stop Disc 26 E. Also oil/grease the cable end where it is held in the leaver. If you're finding that the Yokozuna is hard to bend on rear brake, you can get a noodle from them which will make the job easier. Can't say I miss the dot fluid!

    Definitely a good point about the Paul stuff when you said its meant to last forever. The stuff costs a pretty penny upfront but you can move it from bike to bike to bike and still have something that works as well as when you got it. I thought that it's actually better to use normal pliers for cutting brake housing instead of wire cutters. They are the right option for multi strand stuff but since brake hosing is just a single coil of wire it's better to pinch it and only cut it in one point, it gives less of a burr, or so I've been told.

    Interested to see how these perform. Just a comment on cable cutters, according to everyone's favorite mustachioed bike tech guru, Calvin Jones, for old school spiral brake housing you actually do want to use side cutters, because you're only cutting a single piece of metal...
    EDIT - it would also be amazing to see these compared to a set of TrickStuff brakes. If I'm reading the Paul website right a complete set of Klampers and levers are around $700, and a set of TrickStuffs are ~$900, so not too dissimilar.

      Very interesting, thanks for sharing that. I wonder if there's an advantage to the side cutters. I've always used cable cutters with good results. I may have to try side cutters to see how it does.

      @chiefsilverback Před 3 lety

      @@hardtailparty If you think of the housing as a tightly wound spring, you only cut it in place. He does recommend flexing the housing to open up the 'spring' and then you just snip through that one piece of metal...

  • @chesapeakeaerialphotollc5954

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  Před 3 lety +1

      It still works. The housing is affixed on both ends: one at the caliper and one at the lever. It's the same way a derailleur still works on a full suspension.

      I wish I knew this earlier this summer. I spent $55 on housing and cables for my BB7s. It really did make a huge difference, though. No more spongy at the end of the lever travel means no more hand fatigue on long downhills because of pulling extra hard on the levers. Now I can only blame the rigid fork...😉

    They seem like typical hipster bike silliness. Choose an arbitrary technical stopping point, and then make the most expensive possible version. It's funny how the stopping points vary depending on the variety of bike hipster: road hipsters won't use any disc brakes; touring hipsters will use discs but not hydraulic; mtb hipsters will use hydraulic disc but not air shocks; single-speeders won't use derailleurs; and city hipsters won't even use freehubs. To each their own, of course, but the reasoning involved is usually more of an excuse for a fashion-based decision than a real reason.

      These are machined by hand, and they take a lot of time to build. They're not arguing that everyone needs them, or that they're the cheapest or the most powerful brake on the market. Someone has to get paid to make these, and it's going to cost more than a sram or shimano brake, where they can make 500 in the time it takes to make one klamper. These are not for the budget shopper.
