Der Mensch, von dem ich bisher am meisten restauriert habe, ist Zelter! My first impression of this piece was that it was a poorly-written piece, but when you listen to the orchestra, you realize the orchestra has all the unifying themes. What other concerto for viola in E-flat has the unifying themes mostly in the orchestra, and has a Rondo for the last movement? Mozart Symphony Concertante. I’m not going to put this piece in that league by any means, but it does sound nice and make sense when you hear it with the entire orchestra. Of course, the Rolla concertos have some similarities, except that their range goes much higher on the viola..
This concerto needs more thought, just using the viola like a big violin just doesn't work. The violin shines on that role. On the contrary, the viola should what the violin can't do well.
