- In this episode I'm doing an on the spot cob job repair to my Husqvarna chainsaw and recapping the tactics we use for not only making money but saving money as well.
We are frugal here at our homestead. We live debt free / mortgage free and want to stay that way. The proven tactics I share with you helps us put free food on our table year after year. The credit cards companies feed us well.
Homesteading off the grid and on the mountain certainly has its challenges but there's no place we'd rather live. We restored the old camp and transformed it into a cozy home for ourselves, then we cleared more land, built a workshop and greenhouse and in spite of the challenges of living on ledge -we succeeded in creating an abundant garden. Little by little we're reaching our goals of having a self sufficient homestead.

On my channel you will find videos pertaining to homesteading, gardening and living off the grid with fun DIY projects for self-reliance and SHTF emergency preparedness situations, with some campfire cooking and good old backwoods humor thrown in. Sharing knowledge and stories from over 30 years of living in the woods. - Jak na to + styl
No mortgage on our homestead here in SW Virginia mtns. No vehicle loans, no cc balance. We too live debt free. Use cc's like you guys do. Pay them off every month, gladly accept the cashback for purchases. Lots of canning, freezing and preserving. Our dehydrator running at least once a week making jerky. Now, after your last video, we are revisiting the idea of a good quality grinder and getting into sausage and plain ground pork for the freezer as well. Thanks for the good tips, Boss.
Tom
Hi from Wi, am in same situation. Have been debt free since age 40. We only have one CC card and pay off every month. We eat lots of venison i hunt on my land and eat lots of Trout from our local streams . When our fruit trees give us pears and apples we make juice and dehydrate lots. Also take advantage of the black berries and black caps when in season. At the present im busy getting my fire wood supply replenished. Hope you all have a great year!!
That's the way to do it. A great life it is and you got it
The chickens saying pork comment had me rolling. 🤣
Thanks Boss. In a world that has been so bewildering for the past few years, that seems to one up itself regularly, it is so nice to hear common sense and steady thinking. So calming. 😊
Thank you Charlena :-)
Amen 🙏 Amen 🙏 to that!!🙏🙏🕊
Sooooo TRUE!!🙏🙏🙏🕊
Thanks for another great video Boss and Lori 👍🏻. Appreciate the humor 🤣. Stay safe beautiful people. God Bless y'all and the homestead 🙏🏻✌🏻❤😊🍻
Cash is King, especially when you get it for doing whatcha do normally
You had me laughing at looking for 'something' under S in your ledger. I do love your organization!
The “Common Sense “ approach to life ! Love your humor and systems you have in place to deal with life 👍👏🥃
Thank you kindly
I just love your humor! Your skills are just genius! Pickle jar 27..😂
Hi Brenna
How're you doing? hope you are having a nice and productive week?
I love your sense of humor Boss. Thanks for the sage advice as always.
We have followed a similar plan, with a major credit card company, and basically use it exclusively. We are using our points to go visit our grandkids, in Hawaii. So, this strategy works very well, for those smart enough to see the logic. Thanks for another entertaining, and educational, and humorous video. Keep up the great work!
Haha. You had me going on the "something" joke! I hope I'm not the only one that's so gullible! 😂
your sense of humor never lets me down. i cant help but think that we are cut from the same cloth. stay well my friend !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sure Love Your PJ Organizer's ! Yesah ! Love Your Talk On Your Down The Road Rewards ! You Lori & Them 2 Scallawaggs Have A Swell Upcoming Week Ahead ! Hap-E Trails From Sunny Canada. ATB Ter & Mel God Bless
You had me laughing. I don't laugh a lot, not that I am not happy, but have never been a laughing person. Thanks for the video
Laughing is good ;-D
Mish mash works well, what ever you're cooking up is appreciated!!!!
Lol
Fantastic repair with chain saw!!
Hilarious the hens not pleased
😂
Love it a real make do and mend with a smile love the 3M tape thank you keep safe you Two.
nice to see someone with brains that f can igure out how to recycle what you have...good for you. Always nice to see your silly side too. Take care guys.
Amen 🙏 Amen 🙏 to that!! 🙏🙏🙏🕊
The looking for something in the notebook and the pork comments had me rolling on the floor laughing! 🤣 lol...Great video. Lol...pj27...🤣 Now every time I see a chicken I'm going to think "poorrkk"..hilarious!
After singing along at the like I always do I realized I sure do miss Frankie. God Bless
Poooork, Pooork, Poork. After you squeeze all of the goodie out of that chain saw, try a battery powered one. You will love it! No gas, Tune ups, noise, smell, and much lighter. Not so good for large tree trunks, but awesome for fire wood.
My wife and I have been round trip to Alaska twice courtesy of our discover card. Now we are looking into your suggestions for a cash back card 👍
My favorite glue is shoe-goo from Walmart. I repair a lot of things with it. I repair tennis shoes, in the washer and dryer. And all is good. My mothers grave stone has three angels on it with shoe-goo. They’ve been there for 5+ years and they’re still there. In the heat of the sun, and the cold icy winters. In Windham New York. People kept stealing things off my mothers grave stone. So I got three small angel statues. And I glued them real good. You share how are you fixings. So I’m sharing mine with you. God bless you and Laurie. And keep safe my friend. I still watch my favorite Einstein of the woods.
The quick-fix, notebook, pickle jars (all the cannisters) are excellent!
Bravo on your cash back cc!
Hi Lori, Boss, Frankie and Tildy! 🙋♀️
Nice repair Boss! Hope you all are well! Love the channel thank you, "Yessir"!
We call it "Redneck Engineering" around my parts. Like you, my Dad was a master of such. Although his go to was electrical tape. Mine is hockey tape. 😉
My dad's quick fix was epoxy. He epoxied everything. I can't even hear the word without thinking of him haha
@@thebossoftheswamp out in the woods, my Dads quick and cheap "epoxy" would have been pine resin/sap and then electrical tape on top of it. You can only imagine the "fun" ive had restoring some of his old tools, lol. Its been a nightmare at times but, I can reflect back on memories while shaking my head.
The epoxy reminds me of my Dad. He worked in manufacturing and brought home some C/I quality stuff.
That's why I hesitate tossing anything out. I appreciate how organized you are. That's why you are The Boss. Cheers!
very smart fix on the chain saw- would not have thought to use that metal pipe hanger type piece in the fix.
During the section where you were testing out your chainsaw repair, you asked "I wonder how much the chainsaw repair shop would have charged for the repair?". Your girls answered you. They weren't saying "pork, pork, pork"; they were saying "lots! lots! lots!".
LOL 😂 so true!!🙏🙏🤗
Such good info, it’s amazing that the internet allows us to get FREE advice from experienced people. I just LOVE the idea of talking good money habits right next to a chicken coop. Please consider more topics like this! Anything else really that you have in your head. But I do also love that you never get political! Your channel is my safe space, haha!
With my credit card rewards program I have a choice of cash back or merchandise. I go with merchandise and I recently ordered a great cast iron frying pan. I have a small one but this one is larger and I just got it and I love it! Like with you, I have no caps or limitations. Over the years I've been able to get dehydrators, bed sheets, binoculars and other things that are useful. Love using this credit card system! Love your organizing system for your parts.
Having that option sounds great. I used to have a merchandise card but now that I have a cash one I've been using it all the time. We're racking up the points with these lumber purchases :-o
We do this same thing. Our rewards pay for vacation and Christmas shopping. Learned this from Dave Ramsey.
Oh Yeah , looking Good 😍.
Whoops😱.
JC's got Jokes LMBO 💥.
Nice Cob Job 👍.
If the Boots didn't work the first time, they sure are working for you now!
Appreciate Yah 😉.
Happy Spring 🌷 or should I say Mud Season 😜.
JO JO IN VT 💕😄
Right on boss you crack me up I love your humor , I enjoy your chickens in the background and wood pile behind you . That fix on your chainsaw was awesome, thanks for that video keep ‘‘em coming , I know exactly what your saying about getting a representative on phone takes forever or don’t understand a word there saying, thanks boss .
Glad you enjoyed :-)
Boss, I paused the video at the pickle jars to go get my husband ... and said he needs to check this hot tip for shop organization! Thank you thank you thank you!!😂
See the video I made regarding shop organization.
Good idea! We attempted this once but ended up with identity theft on the only credit card we had so we changed our minds. That was prior to the law changing which does not make you liable for purchases you did not make. That identity theft actually cost us $10,000. Because we had good credit, the company just continued to allow the person to keep purchasing on a card that was supposed to have a $5000.00 limit. I'm glad the law changed on that. If my husband agrees, I may try it again.
Don't feel bad about running over your chainsaw Boss I did that last year to a Stehl 171 which I use to debranch the standing dead I take down. I felt like such a DA for doing that, but hey I got a new one now. Things you do when you lose your focus on what you' er doing. You guys stay safe out there and God bless you two always.
...weII JC, that was impressive...you can fix anything!!! Don't Iose that *do-dad notebook* ...everyone needs one of those for when the internet goes out...thanks for sharing :)))
Gotta keep those dodads in order ;-D
Boss, you are a veritable book of information. Why doesn't the world understand that the older folks have wisdom to share, and stop discarding them. Someone went so far as to call them useless eaters. God forgive him.
Kids these days :-/
Jc you are so hilarious! I bet Lori is constantly laughing! Love it! My father always made a tool to fix things and sometimes a tool for a tool. He always fixed things and never took to a shop. You remind me of him. I remember when I was younger he told me that he was pulling a dent out of a car because he loved doing body work on cars on the side, and he said I came outside and he was banging around on it and I said daddy why are you so mad at that car? Its funny how we remember so many things when they are gone. I think you did a great job on the rubber handle! It looked alot better and has grip! Take care, always and God Bless
YAY!
A chainsaw fix I can relate to.
If your heading out for a hike in the woods soon, take the camera along and share the findings and adventure. Cheers
Backwoods logic or Yankee ingenuity…either way, you got it JC!! Like the cash back and, so do the chickens!!😁🤣👊🏻🇺🇸
Soooo true😊🙏🙏🕊
Nice fix on the saw. Just keep in mind that you have overridden a major safety feature on the saw.
Keeping it in mind.
Great Point!!!! Thanks!!
Thank you sir.
So impressed with your credit card advice, very very very wise advice
Your discipline is key, paying it off every month 👍
Paying a portion of a bill never really enters my mind. Just old school I guess :-)
Great system for any type of storage 👍. You will probably get another 12yrs from the chain saw after the sturdy repair👌. God bless you Boss, Mrs. Lori, and the kiddos😇🙏. 🗽🇺🇸
Thank you and God Bless :-)
the pro model of that chainsaw comes wrapped with a bubble foil handle. heated in the winter and anti vibe!😆fyi
Anything with a bubble foil handle sounds perfect to me :-)
Thanks for the great advice!! Take care all
Hope you have better luck with a garage door than some of the other tubers. Waiting months is not out of the norm. I observed construction on my street. One guy had his house finished in three months whereas the other guy who started his first waited five months for windows and doors. Seems pre-ordering is the way to go.
Great info all around!
Thanks Boss!👍🏼😊
Blessings 🙏
Great humor Boss
Can’t wait to see the other property progress! From Ohio
Thanks for the video Boss! Always look forward to your entertainment and advice :)
Glad you like them!
I insist on 1 more requirement, that all Customer Service is located in the USA. I don't want to talk to some foreigner I can't understand & worse they have all your info in their hands! Nope, not going there ever!
Great video, Boss!
Another tip for Tape, for Other applications is the Nashua 357 Brand of Duct Tape. Best brand I’ve found so far.
Great video 📹 Boss God bless
God Bless.
Thanks you boss see you soon
As usual Boss, you struck gold with this week's message. Thanks, my friend. Looking forward to the build videos. Looked through your
needed lists and found some very fine fills to some gaps although I don't build and use to your level at all. Keep on Keeping on, like alot of your subscribers I just enjoy and look forward to your adventures and sharing. The correct credit card use plan is superb, functional, factual and USEFUL.
After watching your CC video I did some looking around and I found with my excellent credit I could get a card that paid double of what I was getting with the one I have. So now I will use the new one all the time on everything unless my older card has a better deal for 3 months (ex. this month 5% back on gas stations.)
That is awesome!
Great, Great video Boss!!!
Thank you :-)
Great info on the credit card strategy. I'm going to look in to it.
Nice fix...been using that same strategy for many years now...not as long as you though...love it
Chainsaw repair that's Red Green approved I'm pretty sure! 😍👏😍 All the best to ya!
Always love these videos.
Amen 🙏 Amen 🙏🙏🕊
Thank you :-)
LIKE A BOSS! 😅😆👍
Boss you and I have the same sense of humor. You had me cackling (pun intended) in laughter. ;-)
I am so excited! A lady on marketplace was selling old doors, solid old doors for 25.00 ea. and I thought, you know what, those would make GOOD tables for my greenhouse. So this evening we rode to her house and bought 3 of them. Took 3 of us to load them they're sooooo heavy. I am going to use those hair pen legs on them for potting plants and such tables. I got the hair pen legs in the mail yesterday and I am itching to put one of the tables together. lol We got the hinges off them this evening when we got home. They also have handles on them and THAT is what we're having trouble getting off. It's not the normal house kind of handles, it's like office building ones. UGH It got dark on us to we figured we'd try again tomorrow. I cannot wait until the greenhouse is finished! :) The whole are in and around it is going to be a healing and memory garden. I have lots of things folks have given me over the years that I plan on using in this area. Enjoyed your vid Boss.
Oh Dad would be proud of his smart son!
Sounds great! Nice find on the doors. We just started our seeds the other day. We're a month behind our normal time but we always start them too early anyways.
Nice fix on the saw!!! Easy to talk to and get through to. Discover card. Good rewards as well!!!!
Temporary repairs often become permanent repairs, and if you can do it with what you have on hand it’s a win. Gotta have a little “Macgyver” in ya.
I did the same thing fell off my tailgate and I ran it over ebay a new handle assembly. Thanks for the video boss
Great MacGyver fix on the chainsaw, always great when spare parts come in handy for something. I have to tell you though…it was a little hard hearing you recapping at the end with those girls in the background yapping… pork… pork … pork!
All the best and God Bless
Hadn't thought of using a cc to pay utilities. I'm going to try that.
Your new home is built on a piece of land I logged of in the early 70s did that lot with a tractor and log sled nice lot wish thay was all that flat
I wish all loggers did the nice conservative job that you did. This lot is beautiful with a nice mix of timber. Well done Sir :-)
Temporary fix for a hole in a water hose...one of those squishy ear plugs and a hose clamp! :-D)
Exactly the same saw I had, exactly the same problem, only I never ran it over. I replaced with an Echo 7 years ago and LOVE all my Echo stuff.
I love a good fix like that. I keep everything, never know when you will need it. We do the same with our credit card. We pay for our weekly shopping with it and receive points. At the end of the year our shopping for the month of December is covered by those points. Free food for the month, very helpful at Christmas time. 👍
Both of my grandpas used to pick up nuts, bolts and washers off the street and store them until they needed something. My best friend Ray, his dad never had a drivers license but took the bus to work used to do the same and store them in small buckets. The thing with the bass pro rewards card or any reward card, all your purchases are recorded and tracked whether you pay in cash, a debit or credit card.
Funny I noticed you got your chainsaw at the woodchop shop. In my neck of the woods. Must of been when you lived in Norfolk . There's a shop in Canton and Massena NY
👍 Thanks :-)
Boss, thanks for the reminder. I have one credit card and the points do expire after 4 years. Not all of them, but the yearly amount you accumulate is only good for that long. It’s never been an issue before, as I’ve never gone that long without cashing them in, but I’m probably right about there now for some of them. I’m 17-18 years into that game it’s definitely paid off. God bless you guys and it was nice to hear the ladies balking away.
I enjoy your videos. Thank you. I especially empathized with the Husky 345 saga. I cut my winter firewood with one for about 7 years. Then it melted because the muffler bolts are a dissimilar metal from the head. They loosened up enough to allow the hot exhaust gas to go sideways and melted the saw body. You have been warned.
I have used my backup saw for the last 6 years. It's a Homelite Super XL vintage 1972. I acquired it by salvaging it out of a dumpster when my neighbor threw it out. And no, I do not go dumpster diving on a regular basis. I cleaned it up and put in a carb kit and it has worked flawlessly ever since. This saw is almost all metal so it won't melt.
I traded the melted 345 to my neighbor for a Homelite XL 12 circa 1962. He had a 345 with a broken handle so he combined saws to make one good one. It took more than a carb kit to resurrect The XL but it's now a screaming terror. Again all metal. It's my backup saw.
I am resigned to the world running on credit cards. Doesn't mean I have to like it. Yes, you are making 2% on purchases but the merchant pays 3% to 6% for the privilege of accepting credit cards. Then he raises prices the same to compensate. The consumer pays the higher prices. If I could wave a magic wand and make all the credit cards disappear then the prices could come down. You get cash back but you are still paying for the convenience of using a credit card.
Wishing you well.
But if all cards would end . the prices still wouldn't drop. That's how it works . shit never goes down even when it should .but it don't work that way anymore
I hear what you are saying about credit cards and ultimately it’s your channel and your message however you’ve gotta take into consideration you’re an incredibly disciplined person so this works for you. Ultimately though, society as a whole is predominantly undisciplined which is why the message falls on deaf ears or is seen in a negative light.
Very well said.
Jesus boss, spit my coffie out on the ( get pork, pork, pork )
Funny shit, I'm going to use that one.
its a good product that tape here in australia we call it flash tacking many many uses
👍👊JC the rubber boot trick is great. I also save lots of things most would throw away. When I moved I had a trailer twice the size for my garage and do-dads as the one for my household goods haha. Thanks for sharing bud. Hi to momma and the kids. Enjoy
I think the container of rubber pieces is the most used canister in my shop...
If my late Dad would have seen that repair he would have said. "Oh NO Patch Work Pete is in town'' But James it worked good job.
Good video Jim. It was also funny but someone will get mad about your jokes. So just shine them on. I’m saving my ‘MS’ jars. It stands for Macaroni Salad. I alway buy it or cole slaw just to help out on my cooking. They are nice square tubs and I like how compact they line up. Haven’t gotten around to making a list yet. But it’s on the way. Hopefully right after I get the new tool shed built. I got the thing about credit cards the first time you talked about it a couple years ago. I do it the same way. I started doing it first because it was cheaper than writing check and keeping an account of it that way. Now I enjoy the money back and just got a really nice computer because of it. Later
Happens to all of us Boss. I ran over a 3 week old sthil farm boss saw with a 40 hp New Holland tractor. Let me tell you my wife wasn’t thrilled about that parts order. Just part of life and definitely funnier now then it was then.
I had that metal tape, i used for everything, LOL I have the plastic backing silver tape i use for lots of stuff
It's only temporary unless it works! If you truly had your dad's ingenuity, the saw would have been painted blue, like the car and the little "red" wagon lol
I have to draw the line somewhere haha :-)
Once again Thanks. I went shopping the other day and they tryedyo get me to get one of there CC. They said that we will all be using CCs cause they are doing away with $ I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants. I do have A CC and pay it in full every month it is never all that high. Take Care
JC I used that nice metal tape in one of my videos. I "JIMMIED" (giggle giggle) a little solar shop light in my shed and ran the wire to the panel through the door jam rather than drilling a hole in the wall. I only used the tape because it was there and I had it......but I will back ya on recommending it........WORKED great and protected the wire very well. Must be a close relative to the Bubble Foil, LOL 🤣😂😅
I recently got a 24"x25' brand new roll of bubble foil at the dump :-) Its the holy grail of dump finds ;-)
@@thebossoftheswamp HA.....did you approach it with caution like a deer to a bait pile, scanning the area, on alert??? Might be a local subscriber messing with ya, knew you couldn't resist, LOL. Best wishes JC
Got me thinking JC Been paying all cash after getting screwed over a couple times through no part of mine But that’s gone just me and I can do it Gotta call for information Thank you and God bless An amazing handy fella be you!
🤣You had me going 🤣 Something should fix it !
Great job Mr. MacGyver.lol
so glad to be able to sub again to your channel!!! incognito, lol. Great explanations on this and last video. You poor folks you get hammered by some but its a tribute to your persistence and spirit that you dont let it get to you or keep you down. Love you all and God Bless!
Were you unable to sub my channel before? Utube dumps a bunch of my subs at 10:pm almost every night. It's crazy.
@@thebossoftheswamp Did you get a huge blip in your subs and VIEWS at end of March?? We were on a roll doing good and it seems like youtube did their ANNUAL reset a couple weeks ago, trying to regain momentum, but hard this time of year with projects being limited in our similar climate to yours. Just curious, Thanks Boss

love you guys i can't beleave that saw came from the woodchop shop it's only 8 miles from where i live in potsdam ny
Our last homestead was in Norfolk.
You make me laugh lol !
Yep, Grand kids are in Colorado we are on the east coast Air Miles gets us out there for just the tax which is $11.00
