In one of her interviews she was saying how her New Zealand accent comes out when she's around Stephen or people with British accents.

With Anna's accent, there's a mix present and it's often not consciously done. Studies over the years have shown that,
    1. If you are bilingual and speak 2 different languages until about 3-5, years old, it becomes easier to learn other languages later on.
    2. In terms of accents/ dialects generally, if you're living somewhere up until say 12-14years old, the accent you have at that time, will usually be the one that you have for life.
In Anna's case, it's a little complicated, because although she was born in Canada, the family moved to New Zealand when she was still a baby. So technically that's her natural, default setting. HOWEVER, because she had been acting since age 10, mainly working with American people filming there, and later moving to America, as a teenager her accent became a bit of a blend.
Factor in she's now been with Stephen who is British, for about 17years, she has picked up some of his mannerisms and pronunciation.
I find it cute. They both live in LA though I think, so she sounds more american during interviews and of course films/tv shows. Add, that both had to use a Southern accent for Trueblood, I think they did pretty well! Especially when you have an international cast (similar to HBO's other biggest show, Game of Thrones), with 1) Ryan as Jason who is Aussie,
    2)Alex who is Swedish,
3)Allen who played Godric was Danish, 4)Rutger who played Niall was German, and 5)Denis, as the infamous Russell Edgington, who would slip into a tiny hint of German when annoyed, acting choice, I think.
6), Rob as Warlow, speaking in a Southern accent when he was Fae, reverting back to his native English when he was vampire. There's a whole bunch of non southerners too.
If anybody who obsessively loved the show, there's an official HBO, TRUEBLOOD podcast, with Janina (Luna), Deb (as the gorgeous baby /teen vamp Jessica), and Kristin (Pam), who's the complete opposite of her character. They've covered seasons 1 and 2, are into 3 and will be doing 4 and it's halfway talking about themes and BTS, and interviews with cast, directors, writers, musicians, HMW...
I'm gonna go before this essay gets longer. Sorry about that...

I feel like she doesn't make a point to "change" her accent depending on her mood. Some people just do that if you're around people that speak differently than you for long periods of time. I went to a school with a lot of people from Chicago and really picked up on that by accident. Now a few years later I find myself sneaking in an occasional southern drawl that I picked up from my boyfriend who's from Georgia.

I'm from Liverpool in the UK which has a strong accent. Moved when I was 9. As soon as I'm around Liverpool people I get an accent back. My accent changes entirely and I don't even mean it! You'd know this if you'd moved a lot. It's normal :).

She doesn't spend most of her life in New Zealand. She only lived there until she was 12. Then, shortly after her Oscar win for THE PIANO, she and her mother relocated to the USA, where she finished growing up, finished high school and attended some college (Columbia University in NYC). She has lived in the US ever since and has resided specifically in Venice, California, during her relationship/marriage to Moyer (7 years). She's 33 now and has lived in the US for most of her life (21 years).
