There is a reason why Ma is a contemporary premier musician. I am touched by his playing: the phrasing, the undercurrent emotion, the beautiful technique. He is worthy of his accolades.

It's such an honor to see a master at work. Yo Yo Ma is a master at his craft and we are so blessed to be able to not only hear him, but to also see him perform. He is totally transported while playing, and his technique is impeccable.
Yo-Yo Ma is truly an amazing musician, but the entire orchestra were all amazing musicians too... I have watched so many presentations like this one as a child on PBS and I still do 45 years later...
I have no doubt that Dvořák himself would have been immensely delighted with this performance. It exudes a remarkable freshness and vibrant palette of colors, making it truly wonderful 🤩

Всё воедино: гениальное произведение, совершенная техника, очаровательный звук и аура любви и восторга в оркестре и зале. Чудо-концерт. Всем огромное СПАСИБО!
The true test of a soloist performer playing this piece really comes at 35:30 when the concertmaster takes over the main melodic theme and the soloist needs to step back and let the violinist shine. Many egotistical performers continue to play forte instead of following the partitura, which calls for PP or pianissimo. Yo Yo Ma is one of the most generous cellist and he "owns" the Dvorak concerto. He is truly a jewel of a human being and an artist. A true national treasure.
Wow... You resort to personal attacks because you have a different opinion? How civil of you... so easy behind a keyboard when you don't have to confront people... disrespectful child.
GenerationKill001 They’re not personal attacks. They’re just good, old-fashioned attacks. It’s not personal to say one is licking one’s boots; rather, it is commenting on how they seem to find no fault in such a man. And while I acknowledge that he is amazing and one of the best cellists ever, he is not as good as Mischa (in my HUMBLE opinion), disrespectful adult.
Internet "tough" person... I get it. There are polite ways of disagreeing with other people (in person or in real life)... you obviously have a lot to learn on both accounts.
Some say Yo-yo Ma, some say Jacqueline du Pre, is the "better" or "greater" of the two. I say both are superb. To me, Jacqueline's interpretation of the Dvorak concerto is more intense over all, and Yo-yo's is milder and gentler in some places. Both are of the "greats" in the history of cello playing. We are blessed to have both.
Yo-Yo Ma is so over-rated.Yo-Yo Ma not the top 10 cellists ever.Better ones than Yo-Yo Ma are G.Piatgorsky ,Gaspar Cassado P.Casals, D.Shafran, M.Rostropovich ,Gary Hoffman, Karine Georgian, Arto Noras and so on
At the Rolex weekend in Cape Town I met Yo- Yo Ma purely by chance at the Baxter Theatre's parking area... my car had been moved to allow the Rolex mentors vehicles to park,.... Whilst waiting for my keys to be returned, I was there when, out of the very first car to arrive stepped Yo Yo Ma.. extending my hand I greeted him, welcoming him to cape town.... Standing there grinning, not believing that this could possibly be happening to me ...I moved aside for the real welcoming committee .... What fun !! I got to shake the hand of an incredible human being, who also is a brilliant musician & who made my day !!

A lot of the best musicians that are experts at their craft, play with so much emotion and that the instrument and the body are almost communicating . This is a perfect example of that. He plays with such joy and admiration for the music itself.
I heard the Czech Philharmonic for the first time. I was fascinated right away when I heard the first sound. I was impressed to see the faces of the orchestra and the hall close up. Both the sound quality and the image quality were good. Thank you very much
I heard the CP in a special concert in Washington, DC, playing Dvorak. I recall thinking, 'Oh, that's how an orchestra playing Dvorak is supposed to sound.' 😀
Had a CD of him playing this piece... Not only is he a great world-class master musician, but also a humble guy during my personal encounters after the concert as an audience. My university colleague (when we were students then) who had the chance to receive him and other guest performers in the backstage (making sure they are okay & etc before going onto the stage) told that yo yo, comparing with some world-class performers, doesn't make demands, but is humble and very polite, and a great person.
It probably takes a whole lifetime before you can perform like this, not to forget the magnificent Czech Philharmonic. Like Shakespeare said, "a thing of beauty is a joy forever".
It seems to be so joyfull and easy going when Yo Yo Ma plays this incredible difficult piece of art. I heard it yesterday at a concert in my hometown, very good, but this is something else of course. At least I re-discovered what a wonderful piece of music this is, and I am happy now to be able to listen to this wonderful interpretation with Yo Yo Ma.
I lived in Prague at the time of this concert. Was a regular at the Czech Philharmonic but couldn't get a ticket for this particular show (in high demand and quite pricey). Glad to have a chance to hear it years later. Heard many other great things there - evenings at the Czech Philharmonic are always special.
Prior to his featured solo at a benefit performance for the San Jose Symphony, Maestro Ma sat in with string section without fanfare. My sharp-eyed concert companion recognized him. I did not.

I was present in Jordan Hall in Boston when Yo Yo Ma played this concerto for the first time when he was a student at Harvard. We all realized he was destined for greatness. It's hard to believe, but that was almost 50 years ago!
This is the first time I appreciated this concerto, the first time I heard it beautiful, the first time I heard this music to speak, the first time I forgot the technicalities and not getting distracted by the technicalities nor focusing on the players and questioning what's in their mind why did they made is sound like it? I'm purely attracted to the beauty being poured by Yo-yo Ma, the conductor, the orchestra, and the production team of this video. Thank you all for putting forth this beautiful video of a beautiful musical performance and sharing it to us. Thank you! Thank you so much!!
The late Jiří Bělohlávek had a very distinguished career, conducted many different orchestras and did an excellent job of conducting this one. However, I do not see that the orchestra or the date and location of the concert are listed. The audience was certainly very blessed to experience this wonderful performance. If any of the particulars are available, I think the orchestra deserves some recognition.
It looks like Symphony Hall in Boston, so I'd venture to guess Boston Symphony, as to date I'm not sure, my father knew Yo Yo Ma from the Governor's Arts Council in Boston but he's since passed as of 2007...bless from Flagstaff AZ and Cuenca Ecuador 🏵️
@@PaulZink It's definitely the Dvořák Hall of Rudolfinum building in Prague. The exact date of the concert was September 7, 2015, as an opening concert of Dvořák's Prague festival. At the first half, the Czech Philharmonic was playing a Dvořák's Symphony no. 2 (as a part of the recording cycle with Decca; released in 2014). In the beginning of the video, the key signature is stated as H moll ( 2 sharps). For those not familiar with this old European notation, this is the same as B minor. When I was a kid in Sweden a C major scale was: C D E F G A H C. A semitone below H was B. So nowadays ( in most countries) the H became B, and the B became B flat. I think in Germany they are still using the older standard. So this piece is in “H moll “ which is as most people nowadays would say “B minor”.
I usually listen to really fast-paced, crazy music when I write because my brain is so busy that I need something to match its energy...but after a really hard day at work and feeling emotionally exhausted, this was perfect for a 4am writing session. Thank you!
After seeing this videos and going to a Yo-Yo Ma concert soon, I can’t wait to see it even more. Like others have said, this is where skill and practice can’t take you. You have to be fully devoted and completely connect with the cello and respect its simplicity.
Wonderful! Passion and power! I was fortunate enough to hear Mr. Ma perform with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (Wisconsin) many years ago. When the second half of the concert resumed after the intermission, I was amazed to realize that Mr. Ma was sitting in playing with the cello section. I don't think many of the audience even noticed. No mention etc. was brought to the audience's knowledge. I'm 72 and I don't think I've heard of that done before and since. My brother-in-law earned advanced degrees on cello from Northwestern University and recently retired from the Colorado Denver Symphony after 34yrs and 25yrs as the principal cellist in the Colorado Central City Opera Orchestra. My sister was the harp faculty at the University of Colorado-Denver, first call union harpist and played with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra Denver. My mother was an honors graduate in choral conducting and piano at Northwestern University. Toured Europe in the mid-50's as featured vocal soloist accompanying herself on harp with the Dr. James Allen Dash All-America Chorus including performing for Queen Elizabeth II.
What an orchestra! A great, refined, yet full-blooded performance...even the great Yo-Yo "adjusted" his bowings for extra sound, accompanied by an All Men Czech cello&bass section...you don't see that often nowadays (that extra power doesn't hurt in this piece!) :D
If you would ask russian cellists I am sure many of them wouldn't agree...the good thing is that neither Yo-Yo or Rostropovich belong only to their countries. They are a gift to the world!
Iam very emotional Mr MA.I heard the Dvorak concerto the way he composed.I think he knows that one day One finest cellist of the world will play what i want.Fantastic conductor and fine orchestra contribution.
What a wonderful team that lead all the viewers to that dimension which may ever been! Can’t agree more in each note with full of colour and texture……just far beyond that imagination !!!
One of the great works of music. Written late (1894-5) in Dvorák's life when he was at the National Conservatory in NYC for his second tour as director there. While composing the work, his sister-in-law, Josefina Kaunitzova, née Čermakova, became fatally ill. Like Mozart who fell in love with one sister and married the other, Dvorák's first love was Josefina. He paid tribute to her in the wistful closing pages of the 3rd movement by quoting his song "Leave Me Alone (Kéž duch můj sám). Brahms, who knew this work intimately (having corrected the proofs for his friend, Dvorák) was quoted as saying "If I had known that it was possible to compose such a concerto for the cello, I would have tried it myself!"
Wow! I am so warmed to see that there are so many people who share my thoughts on this performance and the human beings that made the magic. We are kin.
I see what you mean, i like how they showed the importance of the horn solo, definitely great angles for the camera to show each importance of every instrument playing
What a huge solid performance from artist &wonderful orchestra. How music such as this be so lifting for anyone who makes time to really hear it, as it brings tears to our eyes.
It's all on Mr. Ma's very expressive face as he translates the heart of the universe into music. The great artist reflects greatly the universal soul, the source beyond our understanding but which always supports the good, an ancient name for God.
Amazing to hear from you dear man. Born Scotland, raised Canada, now 72 and in the Philippines. You're a musical leader but most importantly a good soul. I was a pianist at 6, guitarist at 17. Your Swan with Kathryn so lovely. That's when it became clear you are " the real deal ".
Everything has been said on this great cellist considered the greatest cellist of the XX century ,Who would have believed that this child prodigy who started playing the violin at the age of 4, and who was later introduced by the conductor Leonard Bernstein in those broadcasting TV series ( at the age of 8), would have become among the greatest cellists in the world, and without a doubt, this Dvorak concert is a masterpiece of divine inspiration, in which all the harmonious, festive and melodic feelings of the Bohemian region is embodied, a handful of Czech land without any doubt.

There is a reason why Ma is a contemporary premier musician. I am touched by his playing: the phrasing, the undercurrent emotion, the beautiful technique. He is worthy of his accolades.

No other cellist on Earth can make a sound so soft, gentle, and effortless as Yo-Yo Ma. It's as if everyone else is fighting their instrument no matter how good they are, dragging their bow against some resistance, but Yo-Yo Ma is like smooth flowing water.
I wish you have moments of happiness listening to music.
But sometimes there are anger, desperation and deepest sorrow - he's playing too smooth for me. With her cello, she czcams.com/video/U_yxtaeFuEQ/video.html did imho much better - more passion...

He is totally transported while playing, and his technique is impeccable.

What I would give to see him
Yo-Yo Ma is truly an amazing musician, but the entire orchestra were all amazing musicians too... I have watched so many presentations like this one as a child on PBS and I still do 45 years later...
I have no doubt that Dvořák himself would have been immensely delighted with this performance. It exudes a remarkable freshness and vibrant palette of colors, making it truly wonderful 🤩

Well, I was not able to attend Yo-Yo Ma's performance with the Spokane Symphony tonight so instead I watched and listened twice (!) to his magnificent performance on youtube. This is such a moving, soulful piece of music and watching Yo-yo pouring himself into every note of this piece only enhanced my own emotional reaction! That last note that seemed to reach toward heaven - I have no words!! Thank you, God, for youtube!!
@adela Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
You done licking his boots? Mischa Maisky is better.
GenerationKill001 Better yet, I would still say that were you right there.
Yo-Yo Ma is so over-rated.Yo-Yo Ma not the top 10 cellists ever.Better ones than Yo-Yo Ma are G.Piatgorsky ,Gaspar Cassado P.Casals, D.Shafran, M.Rostropovich ,Gary Hoffman, Karine Georgian, Arto Noras and so on
They play the same Davidov Stradivarius cello.
Two player performed same cello but two different sounds.
What fun !! A lot of the best musicians that are experts at their craft, play with so much emotion and that the instrument and the body are almost communicating . This is a perfect example of that. He plays with such joy and admiration for the music itself.
My hero. I've been to his concert once. I bought the front row ticket just to engrave it in my memory. 🥰

Prior to his featured solo at a benefit performance for the San Jose Symphony, Maestro Ma sat in with string section without fanfare. My sharp-eyed concert companion recognized him. I did not.

Brahms, who knew this work intimately (having corrected the proofs for his friend, Dvorák) was quoted as saying "If I had known that it was possible to compose such a concerto for the cello, I would have tried it myself!"
there is a similarity between the two composers
