“It is neither right nor safe to go against my conscience.”
    Martin Luther
Mr. Trueman, your book inadvertently brought me to the Orthodox Church. Your book was missing the key role the Protestant Reformation (and even Rome’s schism) played in all of this!

Expressive individualism is true authenticity TO THE EXTENT THAT the inner self that is sought and then expressed is part of an effort to identify the truth about one's inner self, to compare and contrast that against God's law, and then to conform one's inner and outer self to the standards laid out in God's Word.
It's when a man or a woman goes about this process without submission to God his Maker that things fail miserably. Post-modern man attempts all this with neither root nor rudder, bearing all the rights of moral authority, however crushing that might be for any mere mortal.
I feel so sorry for the man or woman who succumbs to the world's requirement that each person must innovate his/her own world. It's both right and a great relief to discover that there is a God above, who can be trusted to define and direct our lives.

Expressive individualism cheapens the self. You just give yourself away.

No, that's collectivism what you've described where an individual negates his/ or her true self by sacrificing/ subjecting themselves to the wishes and whims of the collective, tribe, village/commune.

Seems like you are ok with people thinking whatever they want, as long as you are control of their actions. There are also people who are ok with actions, as long as they are in control of your thoughts. Both are equal sides of tyranny.

Tyranny, or just authority. To have a functioning society you have to have an authority that could enforce concensual ideas of right and wrong, otherwise it's individual power struggle. So being a skeptic does make us appear more logical and humble (virtuous perhaps?) but this is not how you build a society.
