  • Part of the regular maintenance on your vehicle is changing the transmission filter. Depending on your vehicle, it can actually be a simple and straight forward job. On the GMT800’s, it’s incredibly easy.
    If you’re getting a P1860 engine code, your Torque Conveyer Clutch PWM (pulse width modulation) solenoid needs changed as well. This is again, a very easy job on a 4L60e.

    I guess I'm not fullly understanding why the fluid couldn't be drained from the " drain plug " instead of doing it the way it is shown here ? Isn't that why that plug is there in the first place ?

      Not all pans have the drain plug. I did it this way to show how to drain it so that someone watching that has a pan without a plug can do it.

Then again I guess that would reflect back to the design phase of the build where they must've " smoked " a little too much before work or on their lunch break and overlooked how to get that pesky oil out of the pan lol .       @@jasond.606 It's all about where the big companies can save a few pennies on each vehicle. Lots of things that just don't make sense to the consumer, but they still go with a bone-headed decision to make a little more profit. This is a perfect case in point. Not all GM trucks have a drain plug in the transmission pan. Yes, it's stupid, and it makes draining it a bit of a pain if there's no plug.

    Dexron 6 is backwards compatible with dexron 3 as detailed by gmc . I put dexron 6 in my 2004 gmc sierra and after 9000 miles after the change and running good . Also I did not see a test on fluid level . How did you come up with the 4 quartz .? I have seen others needing 5 .

      Good to know on DEX6. Didn’t know that. As for the fluid amount, put in 4, ran it at idle for about 10 minutes and cycled through the gears, checked it while running and it was good. I’ve seen anywhere from 4-6 qts after doing the filter change.

    I have one question? Can you use a pneumatic fluid extractor through the dipstick tube to remove most of the fluid before dropping pan? Thanks for the video.

      I tried and the best you can do is 1qt removal. I remove 1 qt from dipstick every 1-2 months

      Not all GMT800's came with a pan that has a drain. I did it to show how to do it if you don't have the drain.

      as long a s it's in good condition and the shift cable linkage doesn't cannot easily slip off, you should be fine.

      The fluid and filter are just part of regular maintenance. The solenoid change was due to a stutter when the torque converter would lock up.

    Hi there great video. I went to car quest auto parts and they gave me dexron IV for my 2003 4.8 engine Silverado. Did the lady at the service counter make a mistake or did you? Please reply so I could return it for the correct fluid. Thank you.

      Victoria M if you have an automatic transmission, you should be using Dexron VI. This is per GM’s maintenance requirements.

      They made a mistake, these models call for dexron III but dexron VI is much better and a direct replacement for dexron III

      Dex VI is backwards compatible to previous Dex... these models originally had DexIII if I recall correctly. Most stores don’t sell previous Dex. The only cars that specifically call for earlier Dex are from I believe the 80s transmissions which take original Dexron.

    Dextron VI is ok for older 4l60e...III isn't even made anymore I believe.

      Actually it is still made and it is readily available at auto parts stores. More than that though, Dex 6 is what GM calls for the 2005-2013 4l60e. Check your owners manual if you don’t believe me.
      The real early 4l60e's used Dex 3, but in 2005 GM switched it to Dex 6 and carried that all the way until the end of production in 2013.

    Thanks a bunch.. Helps me out tremendously. Proud owner of a 2002 Silverado1500 . transmission trippin by slippin.. Felt and heard it coming. Some things you seem to leave out intentionally... Like removal of inside hole thingee..with scribe.. And ? Did you have to remove tranny line metal holder? U did great plus silinoid swap. Thanks. Gonna do my own..     After removing the 2 torx screws of the bracket, was the pan easily removed?
    I assumed the key is removing the shifter bracket…..
    A lot of videos either removed exhaust bolts or Jack up the trans.

      Removing the exhaust Y-pipe does give A LOT more room for getting the pan out. I was able to remove it without taking the Y-pipe out by just working it out slowly.

    The bracket bolts would NOT accept my 40 torx, so I bent the bracket, loosened the transmission mount bolts and raised the transmission with a jack 🤡 and I was able to slip the pan out. I never used any brute force for this (my old man might have), but the connectors on the two aft solenoids came off (broke the copper wire too), so be careful. Also, for the filter seal, we snuck a little flat head under the metal seal lip and bent it in. This was way too difficult for something seemed so easy. Good luck my nerds.

    I'm been trying everything bolts off, fluid drained, and shifter is off but I can't get pan off it blocked by the exhaust and a the bracket holding the shifter cable, and the bolt to remove bracket is so unseeable Alan wrench one

      The exhaust can be shifted by removing the 3 15mm bolts that connect it to the header on each side. As for the bracket bolts, yes, they’re a complete PITA, but that bracket has to come off to be able to pull the pan.
      I didn’t have to move the exhaust at all on my Avalanche, but some guys with Silverado’s and Sierra’s are saying they have to.

      Not all GMT800’s have a drain plug on the transmission pan. I did it with dropping the pan to drain it for those who don’t have the plug. If you have the plug, definitely use that means to drain it.

    So I changed the fluid in my 2006 Silverado LS 5.3 4x4 today; and had a HECK of a time.
    I wasn’t able to completely remove the pan, because I could NOT figure out how to remove that bracket that holds the shift linkage.
    Have any tips for removing that thing?

      It is a pain. There are two bolts at the top of it that hold it place that have to removed. I think I talk about it in the video. I had to use a short wrench to get them out.

      The shift solenoid for the 3-4 gears can go bad at times, causing a slight slip, or even a hard shift. Mine was the latter. After checking the fluid levels to be sure they were good, and that the fluid wasn't burned, I determined it was the solenoid. But, when you open eh pan, you're supposed to change the filter too, so that's why it all got done.

      That's how I new my 3-2 A solenoid was bad. Aamco tries to rip you off all the time saying you need to replace the transmission.

    OK my parts guy said my 01 silverado 2500hd 4l60 takes Dex 6. You said older then 06 takes dex 3?

      Factory used DEX3 up through 2005, but you can run DEX6 in it without issues. Biggest thing is anything 2006 or newer CANNOT run DEX3.

      Transmissions for 2wd and 4wd are the same. Only difference is you won’t have a front drive shaft making things a tighter fit along the driver side.

      Yes, it can be a pain. I didn't show it simply due to having already explained how to get it out and the time it took. My apologies on that. I just worked the 90° scribe around the edge of the seal and gently pulled down as I worked it around it, being careful not to score the aluminum. Bit of a pain to get out, but patience and a soft touch are your friends.

      Use a wheel chock behind the back wheels once it’s on the ramps so it won’t go anywhere. Then you’ll be good to get underneath.

      It was the 3-4 solenoid. It controls the shift from 3rd to 4th gear. If you’re getting a hard shift or if it isn’t wanting to shift into 4th, the solenoid may be bad.

    Mine is 05 GMC and the shifter linkage hanger is in the way and I can't feel what's holding it on I think there's one Allen key screw but it's got to be more than one help anyone

      if you watch the video, you see I have the same issue on my 06. IIRC, there are two 10mm nuts that hold it onto a couple studs. Very tight and very little room to work, but a stubby ratcheting wrench and patience pays off

    Okay. We are getting ready to do the real tricky part here, the actual removal of the pan - CRICKETS!!! BLACK SCREEN!!!! - Okay now we just pull the filter out, replace it, replace the gasket, replace the pan, and fill with the right amount of fluid. You could have just used this one sentence instead of making a video that doesn't show the one part everyone needs to see. Also, you tighten pans in a star pattern from the center out.

      Sorry, this is one of my earlier videos and I was still learning better video techniques. As for the pan being difficult to remove, it's not. It's slides forward and down. Simple as that. And I do go into more detail than you state. As for tightening the pan bolts, yes, the final torque on them should be in the star pattern you state, so thank you. Good catch there.

      It is, but not all GMT800’s came with a pan that has that drain, which is why I showed it the way I did. Also, the pan has to be removed to change the filter, so either way, the pan has to be removed when doing this job. If you have the built in drain on yours, I certainly recommend using it to help avoid the possibility of a big mess of ATF.

    Nice video was going to just change my fluid and pan filter but now seeing how easy it is to replace solenoid, i might do that as well. Only thing im confused about is which solenoid to get. I see two types ACDELCO 24212327 and ACDELCO 24230298.

      24230298 is for the shift solenoids on the opposite side of the transmission. There are 2 shift solenoids but they use the same part number 24230298

    Anyone know if there is a kit available to add the drain to the pan?
    I work on ramps and tilting the pan to drain it makes a mess.
    Also, I went through hell trying to get the shift cable bracket bolts out/in when I did the last fluid change. I'm going to mod mine so it bolts together in the middle.

      You can buy aftermarket pans that have a drain plug. And yes, that shift cable bracket sucks. Little tiny ratcheting wrench was what I used.

    I didn't see the part where you have to drop the exhaust crossover pipe just to get to the pan. I'm assuming that you have a two-wheel drive version and the one I have is a four-wheel-drive version and mine is a 99 Silverado. Or do you have to drop the exhaust from where the collectors are on yours and you just didn't show it on the video?

      Mine is a 4x4 Avalanche and I didn’t have to drop the Y-pipe at all. You do if you want to drop the whole transmission out, but not if you’re just dropping the pan. Of course it may be different on the Silverado/Sierra, but I wouldn’t think it would be.

      I have a 97 suburban. I didn't have to disconnect the exhaust, I just used a swivel ratchet to remove a plate that was close to the exhaust and voila.

      Ended up putting just shy of 4 quarts in. You typically dump about 4 quarts when you drop the pan, so start by adding 3.5 quarts, so the warm up procedure, and then recheck the fluid level.

      @@austinmorris4589 Lol, but not on these. Gotta remember it's aluminum, so it's real easy to strip out the housing threads. 9 lb-ft isn't much, so going more than that could really cause you a headache.

      My torque converter wasn’t wanting to stay locked at around 40mph. It would constantly go back and forth between locked/unlocked. The PWM solenoid being faulty is the most common cause, so I figured I’d show how to change it since I was already showing how to do a filter change.

      @@takeroadslesstraveled6505 Did that fix it? That explains why in an overhaul job the valve it operates is blocked so it's either on or off and that problem is eliminated. One could pull the valve body off and do it while the transmission is in the vehicle but it's a pain.

      Called a pulse width modulator. Around 40mph my torque converter couldn’t decide whether to lock-up or not and it go back and forth.

      Because it’s literally just removing it and since it still had fluid in it I didn’t want to risk it getting all over my phone in case I accidentally dropped it.

      I was getting a skip in the torque converter engaging. Around 40mph it would act like it couldn't decide whether to engage or not.
