- The Generation Gap featuring special guests Bill Kenny and Ohio Express (Includes intro to "The Honeymoon Race").
The Generation Gap was a primetime American game show that aired from February 7 to May 23, 1969 on ABC. It was originally hosted by Dennis Wholey for the first ten episodes, after which he was replaced by Jack Barry. Fred Foy announced during the entire run.
Two teams of three players competed -- one composed of people under the age of thirty, the other being people over thirty. At least one member of each team was a well-known celebrity, occasionally playing against a relative on the other team. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Thank you! Who came here to see "David Collins"?
Nancy Brandon was my art teacher in I. S. 72. oh my goodness! 1976!
Now that is cool!
That’s incredible .$$$$$
I just commented on the 1969-70 TV show 'The Mother-in-Laws' about the 1960-early-1970s TV shows all being about The Generation Gap, and here is a show from that era called "The Generation Gap!" 😲
Even I know “Alice’s Restaurant” and I wasn’t even born in the generation we see here. It’s hard to imagine anyone not knowing that song.
When I was a teenager in the late 1970s, I could've easily answered the questions of both generations because I was familiar with alot of older generation music, movies, stars, fashions, and slang as well as of my own generation. I was never 'stuck' in my own generation at any age. I loved Dark Shadows and recognized David from it.The older boy sure does look like Mickey, drummer of the Monkees, and has a deep voice for 17. I never heard of this game, must've been in school. 1969, I was in 2nd grade.
Of course, you don't remember this show, you were 7 years old!
@@MrMenefrego1Yes Menefrego
I notice that there are only two ads per break. If only we could go back to that.
+bluegrassbaby86 Fat chance. the greed of corporate america today is disgusting.
Yes, but at least we don't have ads telling women that their husbands won't find them attractive anymore if they can't make good coffee xD.
Production budgets were a lot smaller in those days - and several TV ads were still in black-and-white!
It's funny, when I watched this show as a kid of 9, I rooted for the younger generation, but now that I'm a member of the older generation, I root for the old folks.
WOW That's the kid from DARK SHADOWS!!
I loved the "elephant bells"!!!
What a delightful escape from COVID and election 2020 overload - total escapism which really took me out of this time and place, thanks! I'm 61 and remember this show, I seem to recall it aired at night during prime time
I didn't come along until 1975, but Iove this!
coffycup75 When this show debuted on February 7, 1969, I was 39 days old! 👶👶👶👶👶 😁😁😁😁😁
Victor's perm looked almost exactly like Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees at the time.
That's exactly what I thought too!
@@Bigbadwhitecracker I bet it's natural
@@MoosettaI agree. As a cosmetologist from the 1970s and 1980s I can say perms as a “look” for men and women weren’t a trend until mid-seventies going into the 1980s.
He LOOKED like Micky Dolenz.
I remember this show. At the time, I was disappointed that it didn’t have a longer run.
Airdate Feb. 7, 1969 2:02 David Henesy from Dark Shadows. 23:10 Ohio Express. 24:45 "We'd like you to meet the Ohio Express" (curtain closes on them) 26:10 Love that RCA girl!
I recognized him in the thumbnail. Had no idea he was on a show like this
I remember this show. I watched it when it first aired. I was a big Dark Shadows fan and wanted to see David Henesey. It was a show I liked back then. I forgot all about it, until I saw it here on CZcams
What a relief no awful accompaniment music we have in other shows.
How ironic that Dennis should ask about "on the wagon" when he was an alcoholic himself! He later wrote the best-seller "The Courage to Change" about just that.
An interesting idea for a game show.
Original host Dennis Wholey left after a few weeks to do his own syndicated talk show, and was replaced by veteran game show host Jack Barry (it was Barry's first network gig since the 1958 quiz scandals)
Many of the two generations recognized Jack Barry from his 1950s children's and adult game hosting duties on the networks ,
Talk about a generation gap . . .
As much as I love vintage tv programs (especially ones that aired the year I was in 1969), I have never seen this program before. It was actually quite entertaining and I liked it.
1:16 Dennis Wholey looks like Sonny Bono.
26:03 This might be the most "out there" TV commercial ever. LOL!
Thank you!!!!!!!
This was a real entertaining find and a pleasant way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Thanks for uploading and for keeping the commercials. I'd love to see some network retool this and bring it back! Even if some CZcams channel were to redo this, it'd be awesome with current celebrities and past celebrities as both game clues and also playing as contestants. Maybe kids are playing against parents and even grandparents. With people loving to watch kids and older generations react to things, this could be a hit!
July 7th 2022. It's back.
@@Hordak81 😲 Oh, cool!!! I hadn't heard. Where can I watch?
@@ALWAYStheEIGHTIES ABC. Thursday's 9pm. Est
@@Hordak81 Cool! Thanx!
Nostradamus speaks! 😁😁😁 I love the reboot and just now found its not original.
the discotheque scene from "With Six You Get Eggroll" was featured in the opening credits.
***** The Grass Roots (with future OFFICE star Creed Bratton) performed in that scene.
You got it!
***** And those credits were done by the same man who did the credits for HAWAII FIVE-O and THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW.
(he came out to California from Kansas City in the 1950's with his friend Robert Altman)
@@tomservo56954 You mean the picture montage? Yeah, I see the similarities between all the shows.
Yes, I recognized that, too
There's absolutely no way an Irish-Catholic city cop from 1969 isn't going to know who the pope is.
Vic has that genius look...I wonder if he became famous...
From the American 60s game show "The Generation Gap", hosted by Dennis Wholey, this is a February 1969 premiere episode. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
This is fun. Seeing a game that was on b4 I was born is awesome.
What a cool game show! What more could you want - the very talented actor David Henesy of Dark Shadows, The marvelous Bill Kenney, and the yicky Ohio Express all in one show!!
Apparently it was not a successful show as only 16 eps were made, 10 with Dennis Wholley and 6 with Jack Barry.
Sounds like a perfect sort of game show for the ferment filled 1960s that title you know!
What little gentleman young DH is
I thought, judging by the title alone, that this would be silly and gimmicky. But it's actually a pretty decent quiz show that treats the contestants respectfully. The celebrity musical guests are great additions to the show. Too bad this thing apparently didn't take off. I could see a revamped version of this working today. I'd never heard of Dennis Wholey, but he's had quite an interesting career of his own, and he makes a fine host here.
I'm not so sure that is a perm! I think it's his natural hair and he does look a lot like Mickey Dolenz!
I thought I recognized David henesy from the thumbnail!
Why I am thinking of the Juniors vs. Seniors format of Trivia Trap
That's actually a very apt description.
One of the questions is “Who is Mary Quant?” She died just today, 4/13/2023 at the age of 93.
Born '61. Remember the commls. not the show. Although I was one of the kids on an episode of another pretty popular show of the 60s- Wonderama......
i watched that every sunday
Great show. :)
I can honestly say I have never looked at a Chow Chow dog I thought he kind of looks like a pug
The Announcer for this show was also Dick Cavett’s announcer
Yes, his name was Fred Foy. He was also the announcer on "The Lone Ranger."
@@kevinfitzmaurice4072 - And since about 1964, a staff announcer for ABC in New York. He frequently did local booth V/O for the New York flagship WABC-TV.
I was wondering who might be the host of this show, and I was blown off the planet that it was Dennis Holey!
Groovy man,just groovy
OMG! I'm suffering flashbacks!
black and white commercials mixed with color tv
that's like hd came out lol
Going to be honest, when I clicked on the thumbnail I thought Victor was Mickey Dolenz from The Monkees…
I recall the Cowsills were contestants in one show.
"that's my thing" she should have won because she even jumped generations into the future lol
scene 6:22 That dog is a very rare breed: in 1969 or in 2024! the host noted it was popular in the 1930s.the Chow-Chow was a dog breed that originated in China.
Though nowadays, with Kelly Ripa hosting Generation Gap. I suppose if any musical guests would appear on it, they might also reappear on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
.Hi there✌️ ... ..just my humble opinion .. the host had a weird hairdo ( those bangs!🚧🤭🤪😱..🧛♂️).. Love seeing David Henesy💌🌟 ( 'Dark Shadows' t.v. series ..AND his Mom! ☺️♥️ ).. This Is Tom Jones aired before this game showe.
And the nighttime Let's Make A Deal came on after
You both have good recall!
And now 1969 was "The Good Old Days". "Would today's generation know Dexy's Midnight Runners? Would the older generation know "Tosh.0?" I liked Ohio Players more when they were in the crates.
+Steve Burstein If they had any taste they would forget " dexys midnight runners" .
+jsilence418 If they had any taste...they would never have even heard of Tosh.0
Jon Smith Guess I have taste then, never heard of gosh, splosh, bosh or whatever it is .
@Myke Vision Correct. Thanks for pointing that out. Ohio Express was a bubblegum unit, having done such hits as "Yummy Yummy Yummy," which some would call "Yucky Yucky Yucky" and "Chewy Chewy." Ohio Players did a funky song called "Rollercoaster" in 1975. The only similarity was the word "Ohio" in their names.
Who's watching in 2020?
Like I thought nobody.....
The opening credits was way too long. If I tried to shoot a mock game show in film school like "The Generation Gap," all of my classmates critiquing my show would tell me "lose the opening credits."
How ironic that the RCA commercial at 26:03 had audio that was SO bad, her voice is practically unintelligible!
$20 says Victor's nickname is Cueball today.
I only remember the commercials
How did you obtain that master tape?
@ 26:55... possibly the greatest 'do' ..ever!.. awesome color selection . .that should be a wig .. available everywhere!..😳🤭🙂✌️🌼🌻☺️🌈✨✨✨
If they brought a game show like that today it should be called The D-Generation Gap.
Ha! “Big Dollar” show…three kids split the $125 three ways! Hahaha
There are only two members of the original Ohio Express touring band here, the others seem like some young cats they drug in off the street...
Sue is so pretty!
Sue reminds me of Rachel Rylie
I would thought this show was from Goodson/Todman Productions.
Producer Chester Feldman later supervised "FAMILY FEUD" for G-T.
And Card Sharks.
You see other G-T names...Norman Paris, Judy Creighton, Mike Gargulio
@@tomservo56954 Mike Gargiulo, to my knowledge, was best known for his Bob Stewart shows- especially the 70s-80s Pyramid.
I had forgotten that David Susskind's Talent Associates produced game shows; turns out they also produced the first version of Supermarket Sweep. But of course their most famous, enduring production was Get Smart...
Ink spots ----Fred sanford's song. lol
He looks like Sonny Bono
Dennis Wholley wasn't a bad host.
I agree. I never heard of him before.
@@Bigbadwhitecracker A good host? The idiot is revealing the guesses of the players before the question is being answered by the opposing team. If I have to answer a question, and I know that everyone guessed "Yes"... that I would answer correctly... why would I answer correctly? I would blow the answer and take the points for my team because my "wrong" answer would make the opposing team lose that round for predicting my response "incorrectly", and my team would get ahead of them in points.
@@CastleOfThoughts why are you so mad. it's 50 years ago calm down my guy

Does host Dennis Wholey sound like famed announcer Johnny Gilbert?
Why does Dennis's voice sound like Billy Crystal?
“Who is the district attorney of New Orleans?” Why would anyone know that?
because of the investigation into the kennedy assassination and the fact that he ended up on tons of tv talk shows during it
WHAT IS L.S.D.25??????
Are those hooves at the bottom of that set? Did the host come out of a COW at the start?! HA!!!
Dennis looks a bit like Elvis Presley...
If Dean Martin went on the wagon, Scotland would've gone into recession.

Reboot out July 7!
Yes but I'm not OLD enough to have actually watched the 1969 version.
this format is good
wonder why they changed it
those were not elephant bells....the bottoms should have been much bigger
host mispronounced bowie
shocked that david didnt get little orphan annie....which was still running in the sunday comics....and god, did he scare the bejeezus out of me everyday....he was creepy on dark shadows
wow....the pin was worth 40 bux then? must be worth a fortune today
so cool that they got bill kenny to sing his signature song
ohio express didnt actually exist as a real band....they were a group of studio musicians....
Sounds like a fun game, too bad it didn't last for years. If I had played this at age 13, during 1974, I would have gotten a lot of the older generation questions correct, as I was knowledgeable about a lot of singers, songs, movies, slang, fashions, and culture from before 1953.I remember David of Dark Shadows. That man with the curly hair and sideburns gives me the creeps. He has a boyish face but a deep masculine voice.Freaky.
That happens all the time. There's lots of kids like that lol. They don't call them the awkward teen years for nothing.
intelligent idea for a show, not like dumb stuff in 2020
I hate the host of this show. He is flat and not funny at all while trying to be funny. He needs to be replaced immediately.
I think this debut in 1968. That was a big saying...THE GENERATION GAP. This host really messed up the commissioner of baseballs name.
