I'm not Korean, but any interpretation of Arirang brings me to tears. Perhaps it's because I think of all those families torn apart by war, some of them dying without being able to see each other again.
"As the New York Philharmonic played the opening notes of “Arirang,” a beloved Korean folk song, a murmur rippled through the audience. Many in the audience perched forward in their seats. The piccolo played a long, plaintive melody. Cymbals crashed, harp runs flew up, the violins soared. And tears began forming in the eyes of the staid audience, row upon row of men in dark suits, women in colorful high-waisted dresses called hanbok and all of them wearing pins with the likeness of Kim Il-sung, the nation’s founder."
What a beautiful and moving rendition of Arirang. This song always brings tears in my eyes whenever I hear it. There is only one Korea. Let us pray that Korea will be unified in our lifetime. -Much love from the Philippines.
New York Philharmonic played this almost 10 years ago but now I still cried when I watch this ...may I sincerely say thank you to the wonderful American musicians .from Brisbane. Australia.
No. The universal language is american. Everyone in the world can speak it as there second language and it will bring peace and liberty and democracy and progressive values to every person in the world through internet media and hollywood movies.
@@sblbb929 When he meant universal he meant a language capable of perfectly translating all languages with no errors, english is not that in fact english is riddled with causing translation errors in other languages but conveniently Hangul is universal. If you don’t believe me your simply one of those very patriotic Americans we have.
When I was stationed in Korea in the late 60s, I heard this song at least once a day. I was on the DMZ and I always thought it was a very pretty song. Did not know the words. But it is strange hearing such a pretty song as I looked across a no man's land with multiple fences and machine gun bunkers. Somehow, it just didn't seem to fit.
I was stationed at Osan AB in the mid 80's. I remember hearing this song often and was instantly captivated by it. It's an unofficial national anthem to both Koreas.
Just because the leaders hate a country it doesn't mean the individuals do, You have to understand that a country is defined by all of the people, not just by their leaders
Because the right people have been in your life to give you the gift of the deep understanding of music that stirs your soul and give you meaning in your life.
MusicIsMyLife It's a little more than that to Korean people. Whether they're North or South Korean or Koreans living abroad, when they hear this, it makes them cry. This song makes Koreans around the world think about the hardships that Koreans have endured in recent times.
The beauty of a folk song lies not in technical perfection but in the message it sends to those who hear it. In this case, one of Korea with its beautiful landscapes and colorful culture.
Incredible. Such a moving song. I love this song and it always makes me cry. Reminds me always now of my first trip to Korea this summer, which was my dream. Also, as a fellow classical musician, I love the NY phil's performance.
I come back to this video every now and then. I remember being so excited to watch this live stream concert in my college dorm room with North Korea still a fresh topic of interest in my mind. Aside from the national anthems, this was undoubtedly the highlight of the concert. This performance of 'Arirang' tells a story of past, present, and (hopefully) future. The audience's response at the end brings as much tears to my eyes as the performance itself. Hands down one of my favorite videos on all of CZcams. Thanks for keeping it posted.
Corea, she has carried such a heavy cross all the way till now, God have a mercy upon her, and now she needs a reward and peace, God will use her highly out of such a hardship and ordeal for what will be God's will for the whole world to learn how to love each other.....
I just saw the tv special "Americans in Pyongyang" and this performance of Arirang is awesome. This song put tears in your eyes just listening to it. A joy to share with love ones.
This broadcast happened to be on TV this morning. It was a great story. It was amazing to see how the people of N. Korea warmed up after hearing this superb orchestra play. Diplomacy through music from one of the greatest orchrestras in the world is always a good thing.
I was fortunate to stationed at the 121 Evac Hospital 1981-1982, in Seoul Korea. I became acquainted with the Ariang melody and fell in love with the song and It's history!
Osan AB 1983-84. The first time that I heard Arirang was watching Korean tv. When it came on, I was not only struck by the beauty of the melody but by the emotional response from the ROK soldiers that were with us. It was later explained to me that the song has emotional ties to both sides of the DMZ and is an unofficial national anthem of both Koreas. I have always hoped (though that hope is fading) that one day, I'd live to see the Koreas reunite.
I thank God for that. I've been listening to this song ever since I was 4 years old and discovered it being played by an ornate music box in my grandfather's bedroom, given to him by his only son who survived and came back from the Korean War. It soothes my heart... yet makes me cry that PEACE has yet to be achieved; 50 years now, and I am still waiting.........

I was in Korea when I saw and heard this live on TV. Literally the entire area stopped what they were doing when this came on.
I'm not Korean, but any interpretation of Arirang brings me to tears. Perhaps it's because I think of all those families torn apart by war, some of them dying without being able to see each other again.
Your comment just made me think of Taeguki, a South Korean war movie based exactly on what you just said.

Music is probably the only way we can achieve world peace. After all, it is a universal language.

Missabe328 This song is about longing to see a loved one who has left. I guess it was played as propaganda.
It was probably for those families seperated by the Korean War. Although now it plays as Air Koryo's boarding music
It was adopted by the US Army 7th infantry division as their song.

Arirang, Arirang, Arariyeo,
Arirang gogeleo neomgomanda...
This piece by this orchestra in this country MOVES me to TEARS
(and I'm not even Korean).
I heard this in a Korean concert in Georgia and thought it was one of the most haunting melodies I had ever heard.
I have tears in my eyes ... like I feel all the pain of the divided nation....
This is a gorgeous piece of music.
