Sadly enough the 3rd is going to be mandatory or you won't be considered vaccinated. Looks like all the conspiracist gave everyone a preview. I use to think they were crazy...but now they look like fortune tellers!!

This guy is a riot!
I came to this channel a few years ago to learn about plumbing and HVAC but now I come to the channel to be entertained by the customer interactions.
the old lady was real world,,,,,funny too.
Great job man....did customer paid for the cigarette co test...how much the whole invoice for changing transformer and the gas valve?
Once had a brother-in-law who worked in the HVAC system for 40 yrs. He once had an elderly customer in her 80's who had an oil furnace that couldn't be fired because of excessive oil lying in the fire box. She had nowhere to go that night to stay warm, he took her to a motel, rented her a room for the night. He was a Saint if there ever was one. This guy reminds me of him.
How did I end up watching this.... and loving every minute of it ? :-) Comedy heating engineer, the World needs more of this..
I love this guy
Same here.
I know, I started watching Steve to find out how to do a toilet flange. Next thing I know I'm lovin Molly the dog and have watched all his videos since
I watched this whole thing again as Im under the weather. I swear his videos are like therapy
The conversation with the guy calling for an IPO for his tractor was effing hilarious lol
I love the Yankee attitude where everyone sounds like they are 1/2 second from punching each other in the throat in just a general conversation. Then when a tough guy gets near his dog, turns into a puddle of poo. This is worth watching just for the last minute or so. Well done sir. Great that there are still some honest folks taking care of the elders.

LOL you had me rolling on the floor reading this. I worked with a lady from Rhode Island at a travel agency. She had me rolling laughing every day. Looking back that was the best job I ever had with all the entertainment she gave me.
That's because here you got to be ready to find somebody in a throat at any minute
I totally agree with you , thats so funny and true.

"Honey I'm 78, I'm not gonna last forever"....ain't that the truth. The fact she's made it to 78 years old given the coffin nails being chain smoked to the point they read on his CO detector, and shitty vodka, is amazing.
Either the Vodka has pickled her or it's the formaldehyde in the cigarettes maybe.

Moly does such a good job guarding the truck while you work!
This brought back memories! My aunt had a furnace just like that! Installed in the 80's and was still going decades later! She liked to keep the house at a nice suffocating 80 degrees in the winter! She was a chain smoker too! My dad has a RUUD from the early 90's. Had the gas valve replaced a few years ago, still going. Gotta love those simple controls!
DOnt you just love it when you have every part on the van 😂
Steve is the HVAC and plumbing hero of his town! It's gonna be a sad day when he retires!
There ain't many goods ones left anymore.......
He just bought a new truck, doesn't look like he's planning to retire anytime soon.
House shopping now, One requirement is that the HVAC equipment be easily accessible for service and upgrade. No attics, no closets. It needs to be right out in the open in a garage or basement.
I love the rapport you have with your customers, especially the older folks. I try to do that myself, and it makes the day a richer experience.
One of the many benefits of being self employed mama!
I started laughing when I saw you put the CO detector in her cigarette smoke.
And then it beeped and lit up like a xmas tree with red DANGER lights LOL!!!!

This episode of The Shit Show is called, "I'm not Bitching" Nice work Steven, thanks for posting!
I love your accent with your brute honestly it puts a different dynamic on customer relations 🤣
4 years May 12th 2021 since I have smoked a cigarette. Big tobacco doesn't get my money nor my life any longer. Great job on the furnace Steve.
The old valve was a slow open valve. You needed to wait longer for the gas to bleed down from the diaphragm allowing the valve to lift. You can hear the bleed valve click when power applied.
I was wondering if there was more to this
This guy's accent makes me *want* him to work on my plumbing and HVAC. Dude just sounds like he's gonna get the job done, regardless of what it takes. I'd feed this man, just because. lol
Furnace fixed and free health advice. Now that is service! Miss Molly probably has the most reliable HVAC of any dog in Massachusetts.

BOING BOING
With all the dog stealing going on these days, I'm not sure she should be left out in the truck..
Personally, I would check transformer voltage output (24v) with output wires REMOVED. Bcuz... a dead short anywhere on the furnace 24v system can give you a zero-voltage reading at the transformer. You can suspect a bad transformer by merely touching it. A "dead" transformer many times can be either VERY warm (short circuit on the output, as mentioned) or plumb-cold-- open transformer. While ur removing the 4" jct box cover to replace the transformer you could then verify your incoming 115v power supply without having to remove the furnace power supply toggle switch. Save you a step and a little time. It is unusual that you would have 2 inoperative components but it does happen. I'm glad to see you orientated the new gas valve so a person can work on it. I have a downflow furnace and the installer didn't bother to orientate the gas valve from upside down. The valve works but obviously it is a pain to make any adjustments or take readings.
Not to break balls of any worker but plumbers, and HVAC technicians are not electricians or more so, control systems technicians. They can do the job obviously, but sometimes electrical systems can have elusive problems that require a deeper understanding of what's going on.
Your description of how to check the control transformer is fundamental and should be understood. May I add, the same approach should be used when troubleshooting DC controls as a short circuit in the output of modern power supplies will activate "crow-bar" protection driving the output voltage to zero without blowing fuses etc. I've seen more than one time people hunting for a replacement PS only to be stunned after changing and the problem reemerges.
For what it's worth, I've worked over 50 years in industrial controls mostly in power houses, water treatment , and manufacturing plants as a control systems/instrument technician with an ISA certification. I was also an aircraft electrician in the Navy. I currently teach motor control/PLC's/automation at a tech school in Florida.
I've seen some weird shit go down that had us scratching our heads for a good long while...
Good call Scott.
@@johntrauger68 So how do you fix varible speed boards, inverters and modulated gas valves? It is easy having experience and just add that to your skill set via a class or CZcams. A lot easier having background already! Obviously you don't need this but the industry is going to change rapidly. Environmentalism and $$$
@@SovereignTroll
With good documentation most things can be repaired if one knows circuit analysis techniques and parts are available. That's best case. Otherwise, an understanding of drives and the operation of valves can develop a strategy of where to meter under changing system conditions. Realizing the big picture is helpful.
Best of luck.

I live near state college. Which state?
My experience with pilots on RV appliances was that the pilot builds up crud around the orifice hole from gas residue.
Saved myself time by taking the pilot assembly out, blowing brake cleaner through the orifice with air compressor and then reassembling.
Brake cleaner would break down the residue and not leave a film or grease behind.
Great job! don't you just hate it one thing leads to another to another and you have to explain it to the customer not really your problem but had to be done to get fixed
I'm glad you didn't try and sell them a new unit. As soon as you walked in there. That would of been 80 percent of techs out here. They would pulled the bad heat exchanger card without removing the panels on the furnace

I agree.
Anybody who films as he works, you can bet is honest ... With the incredible exception

Good job. As a Gas Co residential/commercial tech, my first step when I saw a weak and lazy pilot flame was to just tap the pilot assembly with a screwdriver to knock out the dust, usually restored full and strong burning flame to the pilot. Then use the hose to blow out any soot caused by the lazy flame. A tap would have probably taken care of that without you having to adjust the pilot flow to account for a slight restriction in the orifice. I have run into situations where someone tried to adjust the pilot flow without cleaning out the restriction in the pilot and after tapping out the restriction, now the pilot was over-gassed and blowing. I would then readjust the pilot back to a normal flow to impinge on the t-couple. I would cut a short piece of 1/4" copper or aluminum tubing and stick it in the end of your blow hose. The tip of the tubing should be bent slightly to get into the pilot hood. I put in a short piece of 1/4" acrylic pipe as the mouth piece in the other end of the hose, instead of putting the nasty rubber hose in my mouth. I would 'fix' inop fireplace gas logs and wall furnaces that used PG9's with a sooty and lazy pilot flame with one tap. Pilot flame became strong, waited for a a moment for the thermopile to heat up and 10 seconds later, gas log fires right up. After a quick cleaning and a safety check, in and out in less than 10 minutes.

Great video. Very funny dialog at the end with the customer. Seemed like a simple enough diagnosis, strange how the other two companies couldn't figure it out. As always, you da man Steve.
Exactly how I wound up with a free Cadillac Coup de ville back in the 80s, a friend had it in the lot at his business and needed it to go, TWO mechanics couldnt get it running, he told me if I could get get it running it was mine, so I bought a new coil and condensor, put them in and it fired right up, it was probably the coil, I figured it had 3/4 tank of gas and gas at the carb, so the only thing left really as to a no spark/no start cause was the coil and condensor
Caught myself a couple times replacing all these parts and then finding a cracked heat exchanger. Kind off leaning towards inspecting the exchanger first. Thanks again for all the informative videos.
I was thinking about the same thing when he started to work on replacing the gas valve: it would suck if the heat exchanger was cracked.
Excellent video Steve. Very thorough and detailed, yet easy to follow.
I used to disconnect the pilot line from the combination calve and attach CO2 cylinder to blow out the dirt. It worked 90 % of the time. Still replaced the thermocouple as preventative maintenance. Never had a callback after that.

You are right! It is bad for inside automobiles, too. Degrades adhesives... (ever see the fabric falling down from the ceilings of older cars)? And also accumulates on electronic parts causing them to overheat. Not many autos come with cigarette lighters any more!
