Eckhart Tolle on Art, Music, and the Experience of Presence

  • Eckhart Tolle explores how art and music created from a place of deep connectedness can carry an energy field that touches listeners or viewers, helping them connect with a deeper dimension within themselves. He emphasizes that while the ego cannot fully comprehend presence, art and music can serve as a bridge, inviting receptivity to the latent power within. Eckhart Tolle also cautions against becoming dependent on external aids for accessing presence, stressing that true teachers will always direct students back to the ultimate source of truth and presence within themselves.

On the flipside, if art is your job, it can be really easy to get wrapped up in self critique, high pressure, expectations, and the strive to improve yourself. People always tell me that since I’m an artist, it must be very therapeutic, but sometimes that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

That's exactly it. It's not the creativity, but the limited frame in this society that wants to fit every single thing in and have it under control. As yours, it's my experience too.

Art for me is without a doubt one of the best healers in the world, because when I reached the young age of nineteen I'd lost all interest in absolutely everything and I became utterly depressed, and in my dark despair I began to contemplate suicide. So I went to my doctor about it and he referred me to a psychiatrist. Although all they could really do for me was suggest that I take medications such as anti depressants and sleeping pills. But I refused to take meds then left their clinic even more suicidal. I therefore turned to the things that I loved doing as a child, and they were playing the keyboard and drawing geometric patterns. Hence, soon after I got back in to the creative process it'd began to gradually take my focus away from suicidal tendancies and eventually it reignited the joy of being alive in me again. Years later I'd learned how to create art using Photoshop and some of my artwork gave me an idea for a unique sci-fi-novel based on the theme of suicide that I am still in the process of writing today. Thus, it has been an amazing journey thusfar and I can't emphasize enough how much the creative process has helped to rebalance my mind and bring me back to the light of my true essence. Wherefore, to return to creating arts and crafts at the time was no doubt a better form of treatment and natural healing for my soul than medications would of been. So I agree, art can not only heal us, but it can also transform us in unimaginable and mysterious ways. Thank you Eckhart.🙏

I see in the comments that a lot of people are aspiring to become professionals in the arts. That is a whole other ballgame!! Believe me, if you’re seeking to utilise your affinity to the arts as a means towards spiritual awakening you do not want to mix that with putting yourself on the ruthless market of art or music. If you do you will always be torn between the cynicism of a ruthless market and your own sincere spiritual needs. These two realities cannot be reconciled and you will sooner or later reach a point of crisis in your spiritual being.
On the other hand, if you accept that your artistic being is an integral part of your spiritual journey I strongly suggest you find a simple vocation as a support in your life and then remain a hidden artist/spiritual being in your heart. This way you will most certainly progress as a spiritual being without no-one else interferes with your journey. Remember, to seek ways to monetise on our gifts or inclinations can very easily turn into the worst type of obstacle we can produce for ourselves. The very long historical list of miserable artists and musicians stem from this unresolvable dilemma they faced.

    "
"To be creativity means to be in love with life. You can be creative only if you love life enough that you want to enhance its beauty. you want to bring a little more music to it, a little more poetry to it, a little more dance to it. You love life so much that you would like to leave it a little better than you found it."
"Creativity is the quality that you bring to the activity you are doing. It is an attitude, an inner approach - how you look at things. So the first thing to be remembered: don't confine creativity to anything in particular. A man is creative - and if he is creative, whatsoever he does, even if he walks, you can see in his walking there is creativity."
"Life is a joy And a joy forever, one that knows no ending. It is eternal. Unless you love the world you cannot be creative unless you love the beauty of the world you cannot be creative.
If you don't love the beauty of the trees why would you paint trees?
If you don't love the song of the birds why should you sing?
If you don't love the music of the wind passing through the pine trees why should you play on a violin?
Only somebody who is in deep love with existence can be creative. And the old idea of sannyas - of monks and nuns was very uncreative. They destroyed many people; many creative potentialities remained just potentialities because of the old idea. The idea was basically wrong. My sannyas has to be creative.
My message is: To be creative is the only way to be religious. If god is a creator, then to be creative is the only way to participate with god, to participate in his being, to rejoice in his being."
"My conception of a sannyasin is that his energy will be creative, that he will bring a little more beauty into the world, that he will bring a little more joy into the world, that he will find new ways to get into dance, singing, music, that he will bring some beautiful poems. He will create something, he will not be uncreative. The days of uncreative sannyas are over. The new sannyasin can exist only if he is creative.
He should contribute something. Remaining uncreative is almost a sin, because you exist and you don't contribute. You eat, you occupy space, and you don't contribute anything. My sannyasins have to be creators. And when you are in deep creativity you are close to God."
"That is going to be one of my messages to my sannyasins. Be creative, because to be creative is worship. To be creative is prayer, to be creative is meditation. And to be creative is to be close to God. There is no need to go to the Kaaba, because God is here as much as in the Kaaba. There is no need to go to the Himalayas, because God is everywhere equally available -- but available only to those who live at their maximum, whose life flame is not a dull flame, who pour their whole energy into it. And that happens only through creativity."
“My sannyasins have to be creators, not through the mind but through meditation. And it comes of its own accord, one need not even think about it. So I don’t teach creativity, I only teach silence. And then out of that silence much creativity comes. One is surprised oneself at how much one was carrying in one’s being, unexpressed, at how great was one’s potential. When one comes across it one cannot believes it!"

For some reason my mind can create an amazing complicated song or parts of a symphony, all in my head. It's a nice thing to hear, but I don't have the talent to record it, I just listen at times. My ego wants to share it with the world, and my present or lazy self justs listens. Music and nature are one of the same. Also I can listen to just about any song I've heard in my head, sounds like I have headphones on with a mind control start and stop button. And sometimes the song gets stuck on repeat, days weeks and even months, well 2 is my max. Go to sleep and it's playing, wake up and dadadadada song. But I figured out if I listen to that song by myself, I will usually have an epiphony. The song was teaching me something. It's weird...
Pink Floyd's "Mother" was the first song on repeat.

As a musician, I understand EXACTLY was this gentleman is attempting to describe. God moves through us and does the playing. God is essentially vibrational and so is the color on a canvas or the vibrations of the sounds. When people listen to that music SOMETIMES God comes through and engulfs entire crowds of people INSIDE a light. I have seen and felt the light come down. First it surrounds the musicians on the stage...we know when it comes. It sometimes spreads to the audience. This leads to astonishing spontaneous musical moments. My husband once played Jimmie Hendrix solo at Woodstock "Star Spangled Banner" He is NOT a lead layer nor does he play Hendrix's work. HOW did this occur. He had no memory of it...but had left a recording device ON beside his bed. Jimmie played through him. No other explanation is reasonable

*This could happen to you also; I, "LIFE The Real Self" ( NOT The Human Body ) went to "The Marriage Supper of The Lamb"... I also witnessed "The Birth of The MAN Child", ( which took about seven hours ) mentioned in "The Revelation" chapter 12... And as Promised I, "LIFE The Real Self", ( NOT the human entity ) now resides in "The HOUSE of GOD" !*

Pretty lame that you have members only videos. Eckhart has a exclusive club.very enlightened behavior.

Why shouldn't he? I think this has nothing to do with being enlightened. He offers value and should make money of it. That's how it works :)

I think that first you have to be educated in order to be called like famous atractive personality, and you can't be just natural, work up is must, mandatory. Or you have to have idols or masters, to some extent from which you learn because thy lived and learned a lot and passed out the knowledge to future generations. So viewed from distance, get good grades, practice, get connected and finish job. Get commissioned.

Let me break this down as I see it logically.
If you have talent in the arts, you would be wasting your time asking/discussing advice with a so called teacher or guru who's artless.
quote: " the EGO doesnt know anything about PRESENCE", now that is proof this teacher knows nothing about the EGO tool sending information from the PRESENCE to the Physical Brain. In this instance the Presence natural art talent is using its' ego tool that it implemented as its send and receive message tool. This is proof how your physical brain is enlightened by your Presence imprinted knowledge within and in this instance you have been enlightened by your Presence artistic talent.
Not only does the so called teacher have no understanding of how the ego derived and it's purpose, the so called teacher offers no explanation on how the Presence within derived, basically no teacher nor guru have a clue how the presence within derived.
In its simplicity, you the intelligent species were initially FORMED not BORN. Which means you were/are never Formless.
This teacher is attempting to fit talent in to justify teachings as the stem. Any talented enlightened person would know what the teacher is attempting to do here.
Reality couldn't care less about, quote: " direct spiritual teaching", if the teacher thinks that's a talent, then he is confused and has never been enlightened by his Presence within.

Tolle, you offer solutions, you explain reality, but far from needing solutions or explanations, these things are damaging, are a form of unconscious spiritual violence on your part. Seeing, perception, sees all problems as they arise, and it's this perception, which leads to understanding, that resolves our problems. So actually, there is nothing to teach. If you want to understand yourself, your life, your world, your consciousness, then you will watch its movements. That is natural. Why call it meditation? But if you try to meditate, there is the entity trying to meditate, which prevents meditation. So actually, there is nothing at all valid and useful to teach in spiritual matters. Because the only thing you need to know is also the only thing that is, which is you, which is to say, your consciousness, your world, your life, your actual, 4 words for one fundamental actuality.
But instead you fill our brain with comforting explanations, fooling the brain into believing it knows when it doesn't. Insofar as they trust you, this tendency will be the worse, so really, I'm afraid, your ministry, well meaning as the simple organism may be, is an evil one. But you have certainly collected, because you have had every kind of wealth out of selling your books and your other fodder for the gullible, lost, confused, and overly trusting human beings. I regard them as innocent, not you, which is ironic, because pure consciousness is innocence itself, isn't it. Those urges and lusts and forces in you are something entirely different, and need to be understood, not merely accepted and satiated. Unless you belong on a farm.
Now, how is it exactly that you never learnt this? Your present state of consciousness was not the journey of awareness and the self-understanding that streams from it. It was a sudden rupturous experience which you never understood: you read books and formed an interpretation of it, and that interpretation was that you were enlightened. But is a silent mind without understanding enlightenment? And has your work, your life, your ministry, been transformed and perfected by love, which would meen it was beyond reproach and of the highest possible standard? People appreciated you because you sold a very old and useless idea very well, with the catch phrase 'the power of now', suggesting you were offering a secret of power, offering some kind of gain. It is only in a genuine desire to understand life that meditation has any value at all. Otherwise, any power generated would be misused by the unconscious elements within us, as it has in your life and ministry, raking in millions while your fellow citizens can't afford healthcare or live in motels and cars. You couldn't even criticise the hoarding of wealth we see in your society by the likes of Trump and all the other vampires, because actually, manifestly, you are one. You can chose different words, but that's a fair description of what is, not a theory or a judgement.
