In Japan, when the risk of death is high, its standard procedure to send in an older professional. They do this with many things, such as radiation, and yes, even with large structure fires.
Because the thought process is that older people have lived their lives, and the young still have so much more to offer for their community.

@@vanshverma2112 you believe its messed up but in actuality this is practical and Japanese have a honor thing. That is their culture and the people there are aware of what it will cost. That's not something they could hide and honestly most would have done it regardless. Some times older people in professions where you you dont live long are far scarier than someone younger.

Well, not quite. The logic in Fukushima was that by the time they develop cancer, they may be on death's door either way.

@freedom_rider6976 oh yeah no definitely, this show is a garbage representation of anything FD related, normally I don't comment on anything but this clip got me heated so I went to the comments and noticed ops IAFF profile pic, and that's why I commented :) although I get why op thinks that, being so close to Detroit they would prefer if every structure just burnt down

Lost my cousin few years ago when he went up on a commercial roof to look for hot spots. Some smooth brained knuckle dragger painted over a skylight and there weren't any safety stanchions. He stepped on it and fell through in full kit to the concrete floor below. Survived the fall, broke a few bones, had a couple surgeries, downgraded from ICU to general room, went home, and randomly died of an aneurysm in his easy chair few days into recovery. RIP Johnnie!

    Show: Station 19
Character: Captain (retired) Pruitt Herrera formally of 19
    Episode: season 3 episode 12
Basic run down: he built the firehouse 19 from the ground up hand picking the crew to become a family, he retired from duty because of a cancer diagnosis (he has three months to live at this point in the series). His crew which includes his daughter and her husband the battalion chief are stuck inside the maze like building with no way out and running out of oxygen. He vents the roof to save his family dying in the process

It was an indoor storage facility and, as you said, it was a maze. They couldn't find their way out because of the smoke, they couldn't see. Him venting the roof cleared the smoke so they could see to find their way out.

This is a method called venting, it allows the toxic smoke to escape from the room the fire has taken over and means that the smoke is decreased in other rooms, it also means you can attack the fire with an aerial appliance.
