- Within this video, I show you how to manual transmission swap your BMW E39 5 Series.
1997 - 2004 523i 528i 525i 530i
This video is for 6 cylinder models using an MS42 and MS43 DME.
Clutch Hose/Line I used in this video; www.chasebays.com/products/ch...
Shifter Rebuild Kit I used while doing this swap. Yes it says for M5 and 540, yet it worked for my ZF 5 Speed manual transmission; www.turnermotorsport.com/p-37...

I’m 6 minutes into this video. This is, without question, the greatest swap description, for any vehicle, I’ve ever seen. Incredibly done sir. Thank you
You're welcome, I appreciate you for watching. 😁
The best explanation I've ever seen for 6 cyl. E39. Thanks! I wish somebody had taken this very detailed, graphic and no nonsensical approach for doing a V8 manual swap tutorial.
I just picked up a 2000 528i a couple days ago and I will be sure to use this video when I swap it! Most informative video of a manual swap I’ve seen on any car!
I have this man saying "very simple stuff" stuck in my head😂 such a soothing voice, great video very informative
Awh, well thanks man. 😊🤣
best DIY video on youtube! Thank you for putting in your time to share this with us! Doing a full swap on my e39 540i this weekend. This is going to save me a ton of time.
Wiring is different for V8 as far as I'm aware, but hopefully you took away some valuable information. Thank You for watching!
i might just do it as my torque converter developed a very bad shake, thank you for the detailed explanation!
Your video helped me a lot during manual swap in E39 3.0d my guy! Thank you very much
Hey is the wiring the same for that? Im about to do a swap on mine.
Outstanding video! I am definitely subscribed!!!
Very good explanation of every step. Thanks
That was quick.. I just uploaded the video a few minutes ago. I don't believe even the HD version processed yet! Haha, I appreciate your kind words. 😁 Thank You for watching!
Awesome Tyler!!! Tyler is the man!!!!
Yep, brilliant video. So helpful.
Awesome Tutorial thanks
Helll yeahhhh I was waiting for that video for yeeears thanks bud
Not a problem at all my man, glad I could help. 👌
Thanks dude, you cleared up a lot of things for my wagon manual swap just like this one. The only difference is mine is a 525 so my auto diff is a 3.46 which should be fine for highway driving and responsiveness, just gotta swap over the input flange which required the thinnest 30mm socket ever. However, I’m excited to finally have a manual wagon.
Hey man i have a 525i aswell any way i can contact you with questions about your install?
@@Blankname209 sure man

Greeeeeeeat video
Wish you did one for the 540I
Great walkthrough. I’m currently doing mine right now. 2 questions.. what was your process in removing the old cooler lines to the auto trans. Connecting to the radiator. And also what was the part number for the seal that goes in front of the gear shift hole. You can see it in ur video exactly at 15:28 in the top left of the frame.
Hello. The cooler lines I just cut within the rubber portion, close to the radiator. Since it's my personal car and not a customers, etc. And the plug for that hole you're depicting, I used a grommet from a grommet set we have in the toolbox. Not sure on part number.
how would i wish to find this vid sooner when i did my manual swap on e39, i did left the 410 dif since i did not find any manual dif in my country. and also send the drive shaft to be prolonged, same reason
Nice video... As you point out, the rev hang is tied into the cruise control switch. If you don't wire in the cruise control pedal switch (either new or old style) , you will have a rev hang..This assumes you have coded it for a manual... Also any plans to switch to MS43 for this vehicle and get rid of the TU throttle & throttle body?
Hey there, yep. After fully coding the car and resetting adaptations, the cruise control works and the rev-hang is gone.
When it comes to MS43 swapping, I'm not looking to perform that on this car. I however have done two E46s. Have some spare M52TU throttle bodies on the shelf, and like the feel of the drive by cable.
ok i just need a e39 now :D
Hello, very good explained video. but i have e BMW e39 530 diesel that have been swapped to manual. and i have a 2 pin connector with the clutch pedal. wired that up to pin 23 in the DME and i cant get cruisecontrol to activate. the light comes on but it wont set. any tips? thx
Have you cleared adaptations?
Any idea if this applies to the diesel 6-cylinders as well?
wonder if i could manual swop my x5 e53 like this.
does the wiring work without those sensors if i just put the wires together that are meant to go to the sensors. ( i have taken engine and whole harness from e39 530d automatic
and put them to an e46 body. So the car is now manual with automatic harness and i was wondering that does the car start at all without the wirings.
Put 12v to pin 8 of EWS. The car will start, whether in gear or not. -I am not liable if you damage your property or others.
Hey I have 2006 530i I'm doing manual swap, what are the wires I need to wire up to get it to start
I put all that information within the video.. at the very beginning I say what time frame to skip to, for wiring information.
For the reverse lights switch ,i just need to run one "+" cable from the sensor on the gearbox and wire it to the orange coloured wire ? ,and the "-" to the brown , and eventually run one cable from the orange cable to the cluster (low cluster black socket pin number 4) right ? ,mine is alredy everything coded just dont have done the reverse light wiring :)
Low cluster, pin 4 of black, yes.
@@OLearysBMW hello again after a time ago ,I have some problem with the cruise control ,is it because I didn’t ran the cables for the clutch switch ? Or there is something else ..
@@Snease_M57d Did you code the car? Clear adaptations after coding. Clutch switch is needed for cruise control.
@@OLearysBMW everything coded with BMW Scanner ,no faults anything ,just the cruise control is not working
@@Snease_M57d you need clutch switch for cruise control.
Im about to do a manual swap on a 1998 540i and the gearbox is from a 530d 2001 I have the full parts car would the wiring be the same I’ve already bought a adapter plate because here in uk the 6 speed 540i gearboxes are insanely expensive
V8 wiring is different as far as I know.
@@OLearysBMW how different ?
@@Konrad462 I literally don't know. "As far as I know"
you didnt have to bleed the clutch or slave cylinder? Do you leave the fluid to gravity feed over time?
You do have to bleed it, yes. I was alone during the process, which I did gravity bleed it for the most part. Haven't had any issues, I still daily drive it.
@@OLearysBMW thats awesome man, thank you!
Very good video! but i have 1 question, i have only 1 clutch switch with 2 pins? (red). i took it to ground and to pin 23 in DME and i have a connection with live data with DME. but i cant get my CC to work. what can i do to make my CC work?
Hello, I now see what style you have after looking, the 2 pin style.
Okay, so have you cleared adaptations? My CC control would not work and I had rev-hang until I cleared adaptations.
what do you mean by clear adaptations?
@@aleksandervik2066 do you have MS4x Flasher Tool? Or any other flashing tools?
@@OLearysBMW i have winkfp, and all coding and programming is done as far as i know atleast. do you have a tutorial on the programming?
@@aleksandervik2066 I currently don't. My final step after all coding was to clear the DME adaptations, then my cruise worked. There's usually that option in your flasher tool. MS4x Flasher has it.
Anybody got any knowledge on swapping an S52 from a auto m3 into a manuel 01 e39 wagon. Any info is a blessing 🙏

Wow. Very detailed. I’m Gonna do a manual 6 speed on my 94’ 840 Ci @junkm6
In my search I came up to your video and have to say it is great. I would like to ask if you can, as you seem to be very knowledgeable.
I have 528i e39 year 2000 and putting in a 16 inch electric fan .Can you show me how to install the wiring please , I am sure there will be others that would like to know the perfect way to install. I am also considering changing the auto trans in it as I just saw how it is done .Thank you .
My e39 has been manual swaped, however if i stall the car i have to wait around 5 seconds to 10 seconds to start the car. Is this normal?
Nope.
@@OLearysBMW is this something that is supposed to act normally after a manual conversion, that the key tumbler doesnt lock. And if so do you suggest maybe coding it away
@@olakvernenestkje7332 which key tumbler?
@@OLearysBMW i really wouldnt know, my key just wont turn if i stall the car and i have to wait 5 seconds, or if i start the car and stop before it turns on. What would you reccomend me do?
Will a 99 323i manual work for my 01 530i
The transmission itself only, yes. You'll need E39 everything else. Electrical pins will be the same, too.
Hey Tyler was that a Gm? Or a 5hp19? If so how many miles on it?
It's shot. But it's an; GM4L30E 4 Speed.
@@OLearysBMW do u have any 5hp19 with low miles just inquiring
@@dironizareyes596 Nope, but will have a full E46 manual swap kit available here soon if you, or anyone is looking. Also have a healthy M54B25 just chilling, $550. From oil pan to valve cover. Long block.

My son & I currently did a 2000 528i m52b28 & manual swap into a 2001 525i auto. Car cranks up smooth. Idles smooth shifts out great but is stuck in what feels like safe mode. Only code we are seeing is P0601 after swap we did an ews delete. Car will not go above 4k rpms or 55mph wich ever one come 1st. Would u have any advise as to what may be the issue? 528i fuel rail had a return, we installed the 525i fuel rail wich does not? Manual accelerator as the m52 has manual accelerator cable
So you swapped the M52TUB28 into the 525 chassis? Which DME are you using.
@@OLearysBMW M52B28 using the DME that came with the engine MS42DME
@@AdrianTorres-uy2cx It's an M52TUB28, not M52B28. MS42 was not used for M52B28. It would've been beneficial to retain the original MS43 and have it flashed for 2.8 liter. Could've used the M54B25 intake manifold and all. There are chassis wiring differences between MS42/MS43. Including throttle body/pedal.
My apologies it is a DME MS43 just looked at the pics I had prior to install
@@AdrianTorres-uy2cx I would use M54B25 intake manifold, throttle body.. etc. Will bolt straight on.
Where did you buy the trans?
Looking to find a dealer to ship to AZ
Was my own, from another car. Best to buy a full parts car.
Similar with an e39 530d?
I am not sure, we didn't get diesel E39 in the US. So I'm not certain of the wiring or transmission types. Pedals and what not should be the same.
I’ve done everything in the video and it doesn’t start do I have to bleed the clutch to get it to start or no
?
No. There is an issue somewhere else that you need to address. Perhaps something to do with clutch switches.
I’ve ran everything I think the same I have the newer switch with just the 1 4 wire plug
1 ground 1 positive and 2 blues
Do I have to have the reverse light hooked up to get it to start
@@user-ft9wj1sq2x Reverse signal is not needed to start. Does your EWS box audibly click when you depress clutch pedal with key on? Like mine did in the video.
