Part 1 - Dumpster Diving on College Move Out Weekend!!

- It's that time of year again! The students are moving out and throwing things away in record numbers. --- To get a jump start on the weekend, I went solo diving on Thursday to check some dumpsters near the campus and get a feel for where the big construction dumpsters were being set up. I love the pet carrier backpack and am excited to try out the hammock! Alex and I have been diving soo much this weekend and I will be posting more college move out videos soon, so stay tuned!! I'm so excited to show you how much we've been finding!

My local college puts up a giant tent this time of year for 'futons and furniture' and the going students bring stuff there so others can come get it for free. Wish more would do this
THAT is a great idea! Re-use, reduce and recycle useable items and keep it all on campus too.

in Scotland some charities put out special big bins for the students to donate all their bedding, towels and clothes at end of year when they leave.
The cutout on tub slat is for a wine glass I bet 👍🏻
My son and his roommates furnished their college apartment from the dumpster. they stayed year round so at move out time they would just upgrade stuff as needed.

My son had my husband's old full sized truck at college and he and a buddy of his would go around campus and the apartment complexes off campus and find good furniture. My son would list it on the local Facebook Marketplace and sell chairs, tables of all sizes, lamps, sofas, beds, rugs etc. He even sold some furniture to grad students and associate visiting professors who needed to furnish an apartment but didn't want to spend money on new items. He and his buddy eventually always had people asking what they had available for sale.

@@thriftytowers7160 Two industrious young men. If you can flip something for a profit my son still posts items on his local Facebook Marketplace. Car parts do well too. He's sold bumpers if you can believe that! One man's "junk' is another man's" treasure" still rings true nowadays.

The bath tab, the other part is to hold a glass through, you slot the stem of a wine/gin/champagne glass in it, and it holds it for you x
Thanks to your channel I hit my 2nd college of the week. I want to slap these kids for the waste I saw!! Rescued lots of food, toiletries and a TON of clothing. Best score was an awesome purple and pink Adidas backpack with an almost new pair of Adidas ladies shoes inside! Lots of Adidas, Pink, Under Armor, Levi's, etc name brand clothing. I got a almost new skid proof mat for our tub and 2 big bath sheets!!
Spoiled kids are use to getting everything new and feel "entitled". Sad they don't appreciate what they have.

The author of my favorite book about dumpster diving referred to college students as wasteful pukoids. No offense intended but an accurate description.

As a mom, of 3 former college students….THANK YOU for reclaiming the items my kids were too dense to appreciate🤨 good grief the waste is so frustrating!!

I would love to be near a college when the students move out, so much is left! One good note, there is a college, Bowdoin College about an hour from me that hosts a rummage sale with all the leftover stuff that students leave/can’t take/don’t want. The money raised goes to a few charities in the area and it is mostly run by volunteers. It happens over a couple of days, with stuff cheaper each day. I can’t always go to it, but am happy that they do this, and I hear they raise a good bit of money.
Whew! I'm ok just a little shaken up from the fall. 😂

I work at a college in FL; and I found a BRAND NEW still gift wrapped sound bar. A Steve Madden leather satchel. Lots of cleaning supplies. But, I’m mostly happy that I found stuff for my teacher friends ! (We have an attached 2-8th grade school off which I’m partly responsible for) made their days for sure.
So many students are so spoiled and wasteful. I’m glad you are saving things. Perhaps you could just put out some kind of ad or service saying you’ll pick up the things the don’t want to take home BEFORE they throw away..like a salvage service??

The salvage service is a great idea! She might end up with a lot of junk though, would have to do even more curb alerts!!
I don’t think that students are spoiled. They just don’t know any different . Some are very conscientious of the environment .
Some students are from out of state and taking home everything is not feasible.
@@splenderdo7939 that is totally understandable, but they could attempt to get rid of their things responsibly instead of throwing them away. They could do their own curb alert. It’s just lazy.

You really need a head cam. Makes it so hands free for ya.when you buy something from a garage/yard sale, ALL sales are final. That is the risk you take.

@Breafkast I also clean large rugs very similar. Use lowest setting on power washer so you dont blow holes in the rug. I use a 5gal.bucket of hot water with tide or other good laundry soap and a brush like you use to clean an RV or truck. Its on a handle and easy to actually scrub while standing.
You have got a good sun tan. The back pack is for a small dog or a cat

Throw a big towel over the black hammock when you use it. Great finds.
The thing for the bathtub is really nice when u wanna relax and read or just soak and set candles on it. I loved mine.
College dumpsters must be the best. No worries about items all sprayed red or deliberately broken. No intense security people around. Motivation is there for students not to take the stuff back to whereever. Electronics and household basics that are so useful to you or for donation purposes.
The plant in the orange-ish pot looks like a callibrocoa (super bells). Oh, and I think you should put a Squishmallow in that pet backpack!

Keep a tarp in your truck. Always good to save on cleaning up your truck bed, for when it rains, to cover your items if you go to shop somewhere. A small ladder would be helpful to reach items in dumpsters.

Hi! Those nail caps are to keep cats from scratching. My son used them because they’re kids play a little rough with the cat and was getting scratched.
They have a lot of videos on CZcams especially Homestead videos to teach you how to make your own laundry soap and it's more affordable.

I had a little pet carrier and it took my little dog 3.5 seconds to tear it to shreds. Needless to say we had to go to the hard plastic carrier. She likes it just fine! I like it when Alex goes with you too! It must be the Grandma in me but I just feel better. I love watching your channel!Keep up the good work! Please be careful and stay safe! ❤️❤️

You were hitting the jackpot right away! You found some useful things for you and Alex too! I found a large centerpiece with artificial flowers, three glass candle holders on a shallow metal tray. The tray was bent in one corner. I was able to reshape the bent area. The price was $72. I found a useful black crate filled with metal bookends from Barnes & Noble. They also had thrown away a large toy train/car platform for kids. I had to leave it because it was very heavy, and I drive a two door Fiat. LOL! The scene had faded, but I would have had fun restoring the faded scene. I think the slot in the bath tray you found is for a handled, bath brush. I love the fact that you found plants you can use in your backyard. I got a laugh when you talked about the very large, student dumpster from last year I remembered it too. I have been watching you since the beginning.
I believe the clear plastic like cup with the handle goes on a Magic Bullet Blender.
Great haul again, the bath bar is for a wine bottle, phone/tablet stand, and the cut out is for your win glass to slide into :)

Finding free treasure is such a thrill! This month is “cleanup week” In our area, and people come from all over to “shop”! People put such amazing stuff out on the curb. We were having so much fun, searching for stuff, chatting about our cool finds! No hate, just the thrill of the hunt! And that’s just one month out of the year!!! You do this all the time!
Those caps are great for kitty claws. Keeps them from tearing up the furniture.

A college in New England has a donation center for end of year stuff that is then available to anyone who needs it
That ottoman is a great upcycle peice. The big ones can be turned into a coffee table with a glass top too.

When I was in college, I did same thing. I found TV's, microwaves, phones, ipads. But you gotta get it quick, others trying to salvage perfectly working electronics.

I need one of those pet carrier backpacks. I have a 4 lb Morkie and when I take her anywhere she steals what ever she can get her mouth on!
You can put any small animal in the backpack. I saw someone carrying their bird on their shoulder and in a backpack like that. Cute.

4:38 OOOH those are worth like 200 bucks on amazon! NICE! I've owned several of those in the past, not a one was broken, and I put em through their paces. The trick is you can really only was like 1 pair of jeans an a couple of pairs of socks, so VERY small loads. Also, obviously the spin dryer doesn't totally dry the clothes. They aren't hard to test, you plug it in, and if it spins, it works. Probably the people were just unfamiliar with how it worked.
I tried those nail caps for both of my cats. They chewed them off..

That cushion is super expensive!! The one that is on the side is the dumpster folded in three. It is actually for like sleepovers or camping. I had a lab/mastiff and he loved it!!! I paid like $90 for it. It was difficult to find something big enough for him. Miss him soooo mulch!! 💕
I really liked that rug!
Cut up a banana peel and add a cup of boiling water. Let sit till cool. Remove peel and add to your plants. It gives them potassium. Add blended egg shells and put A teaspoon of the powder in each plant. Gives them calcium. Free fertalizer!!!!
