What Does an Alien Ocean Look Like?

- Life on Earth started in the oceans, meaning that's a pretty good place to start looking for life elsewhere. In order to find these promising cesspools for chemical reactions, we'll need to know what they look like.

Joke aside, even if we don’t freeze to death I don’t think it’s dense enough for human to swim in 😂 we’ll just sink to the bottom.
@@HenryPh_am
Hi Henry, does that mean there would be much less pressure at the bottom?
Jokes on you, both thoughts went to my head at the same time.
There is an ocean of molecular hydrogen on top of another ocean of metallic hydrogen on Jupiter and Saturn.
There is also a mixed ocean of Water, Ammonia, and Methane Ices on Uranus and Neptune.
yep
How can there be oceans on gaseous planets when they don't even have a surface?
@@goofsterngafster8411 The further into a planet you go, the greater the pressure becomes. When the pressure gets great enough, the gas transitions to the liquid phase. Because of this fact, the vast majority of a Gas Giant’s mass is actually not in the gas phase. It’s mostly in the liquid and solid phase.
@@eyuin5716 I never considered this. Thanks 🙏
I mean, by that logic, there is an ocean of molten rock on Earth- just hundreds of kilometres down. I think what he means is SURFACE liquids.

Actually, my first thought was: "That entirely depends on the kind of planet. Earthlike? Water world? Hycean world?"
So rather than "oddly specific", this was an oddly vague question. It was nevertheless addressed with the example of Titan highlighting the breadth of the issue. Still, I'd hesitate to consider methanum oceans to be conducive to life, even specially adapted forms, due to the low amount of energy going around such a system and the enormous amount of energy provided in oxygenic biospheres.
God, this channel is amazing. High quality content answering questions I ask myself frequently, and with a bunch of very well done visuals. I love it.

Hey, I have been watching your videos for some time now and the quality just increases each and every video. As I am a geography nerd as well as interested in space, you are literally my heaven. 😀😁
I am surprised you didn't bring up Venus' invisible supercritical CO2 ocean, a truly alien ocean. Sure, it is not a liquid per se, but it is definitely not just mere atmosphere either.
Interesting. What does even supercritical CO2 'structure' would look like and the fact it is maintained is really interesting.
There is also moisture of Sulfuric Acid in Venus’ upper atmosphere.
That supercritical ocean is the exact reason I call Venus a jovian, as major atmospheric components being supercritical is something only shared by Venus and the 4 traditional jovians.
@@JupiterBoy100 I am myself quite partial to a typification schema with multiple "sections", so to speak, so "jovian" or giant is just a size class, distinct and independent of other qualifier classes, such a "surface fluid" class.
So we could consider both venus, Jupiter and Saturn as all equally being "gas planets" when talking about their surface fluids situation, at the same time it completely valid to consider Venus on a separete gas [standard size class] planet class from Jupiter/Saturn in their gas giant [planets] when looking at both aspects at once.

I usually don't like content about aliens and finding alien life, but you made it so much better. Your channel is brilliant, keep it up.
Wow, I was obsessed with Titan for years, and I never knew that it's oceans were small and at the poles. I thought the dark spots were just the oceans, but obscured through the clouds.
This channel content is amazing. These are the things I wish they would make hollywood sci fi movies on.
I remember watching your channel when you had 20k ish subs. Nothing change, except maybe the intro and a few features, this is top quality youtube and congratulations for keeping up the excellent work

Can't it be both??
Hands down, you're by far my fav Science/Geography Channel! ❤
Actually my first thought on reading the title was to assume alien water oceans, but under different gravitational conditions. An ocean on a 2G world would be quite different to our own.

Titan the moon of Saturn is the birthplace of Thanos from Marvel.
Thanos probably drinks & breathes methane.
No, Thanos is from other Titan. It is supposed to be a pretty big rocky planet, while our Titan is a large moon.

The methane oceans make me wonder what came first here, Algae, peat and plankton, or methane, coal and oil?
I doubt that algae and plankton created the methane there, so it looks like methane or methanum comes first.

I love your originality.
Amazing videos, keep it up
3:14 "Theres debate if it was liquid CO2"
Id argue no cause it would need 5x our air pressure to form CO2 liquid. By no means its out of the question considering Venus is at 90x and is smaller than us. But H2O has been detected practically everywhere on Mars, its much easier to form (meaning even if a CO2 lake did exist it would have disappeared and been replaced by water anyway) plus theres loads of mineral deposits, both detected from space and from rovers that can only be formed by water!
So CO2 lakes maybe, and water lakes definitely
Do you mean H20 couse ho2 is hydroperoxyl.

So in case you were wondering what the equatorial dark bands are it probably is dunes made of water ice sand.
Would an ocean of methanum behave like an ocean of water on the person-sized scale? What I mean is, if I was able to captain a boat on the oceans of Titan, would there be waves like out in the deep ocean with crashing waves and storms? Or would it be flat?
