Old shield can't block fire balls, throwing axes, or throwing maces. New shield blocks ALL projectiles.
not only that, it blocks maces in general. I don't think the regular one blocks those at all.

Guys, it's a shield. Not a whole lot of intelligent guesses on what a new shield would do. Really don't believe it's much of a spoiler to say new shield blocks stuff, but better!

A+ take on exactly what I was to about comment upon conclusion of the video but I skim afterwards first as to not be repetitive of others. That moment of non-realization by Jared elicited a hearty laugh. xD

if I understand things correctly, this game was built ground-up in Game Maker Studio and the maps using another tool, it's not like a direct port or anything of the sort...
So Hoverbat effectively recreated the mechanics and basic map from the original game, but changed and played around with it to make this version! That's really awesome
I love how much bigger and more complete the game feels!

I had forgotten that was a thing (the drip statues that tend to spawn blobs can rarely spawn Iron Knuckles).

I've always thought this game didn't look like a good Zelda game, but the more and more I watch Jared play it (the randomizer and so forth) the more enjoyable it looks. Kinda wanna play this Unity version for myself. It looks great with some nice QoL.
Wonder if you can fly up that giant tree on that island using the Fairy spell.
It's actually a favorite for a lot of us. This remaster is probably the best version now, you should totally try it!

The thing I like about this version is that it doesn’t feel like this added in. It feels like this is missing content from the original release. I know it isn’t but that is what makes this awesome.
I love that Jared didn't realize he blocked fire from the floating eye in the dropping block room.
That room with the falling blocks in the green palace is the best xp grinding spot in the game. If you position yourself right you can just stab an endless supply of that single eyeball, quickly and efficiently maxing levels out. Then get 1-ups from finishing the rest of the palaces.
Shame there were no enemies that were casting fire so you could test the new shield. Nope, none at all.

In the forest around the small lake northwest of the River Guardian, you can upgrade your fairy spell to a cucco spell
@@FattBaker I don't see where you upgrade the fairy spell. I found a screen with a fairy consumable for health.

Robbing the King's tomb is one of the coolest ways to acquire a new shield.
The cliffhanger, now we'll have to wait to see what's the deal with that enigmatic spell. Looking forward to it ✌🏼

This is the part where I went full on secret hunter mode and ignored the palace bosses for a while heh
Book of mudora is acquired ✅ hyrulean shield acquired ✅
Things to remember from 1st game:
1> in a town, talk to a magic restorer only (while able to cast the "heal" spell) to restore BOTH life (red) and magic (white) by casting the spell twice.
2> this room is used to max level all the way up to 8/8/8 and get 26 extra lives. 21:28 (wait for the blocks to fill up, jump on top of a constructed platform 3 blocks high, cast the "protect" "fire" "reflect" "jump" spells to prepare, used "heal" to stay healthy, face left, inch over until you see the "ghosts" begin to spawn, and mash the sword to fire from it to continuously kill them, every 6 killed will produce a (red) magic jar or 200 exp bag up to a total of 6, loot them when ghosts stop spawning, REPEAT UNTIL SATISFIED!) This is why you level only sword in the beginning.

I have to admit, I love how the entire rafting sequence of islands to get the book is new stuff, and Hoverbat was apparently like "what if I made 5 islands in a row that someone might gaslight themselves into thinking *that's kinda whale-ish* only to actually reach Whale Island and realize *okay, this is definitely a whale shape."*
Nah, looks more like a dolphin to me. I think we should keep searching.
I presume the fire wizards are Pyromagus. But who knows, enemies in old Zelda games have inconsistent naming...

I mean surely they had to have made the spell spell do more than one thing, so yeah that mysterious gate is probably opened by it.
Don’t know why you don’t just hold the down stab on the floating bubble guys. You’ll keep stabbing and don’t have to move at all to kill them.
He is doing a technique where you spam the down button while doing the downstab enemy stunlock. This causes the game to register several stabs in quick succession, killing the enemy a lot faster. The technique is difficult to do without veering off to one side.

at 20:20 if you are talking about your attack magic and defense they max out at 9 now if you are talking about your magic and health bar they also max out at 9.

This run has been instructive to watch, since I missed a couple of things here and there.
I think this game is, in a way, more complex and advanced than aLttP. If I hadn’t beaten LttP several times and watched both original and randomizer runs beaten several times I’d rather play LttP, but this is a really cool update to Zelda II that makes me actually want to play it. Never thought the day would come when I WANTED to play Z 2. Lol
So, if you use the chicken spell in the Palace on the Sea, does that make you Chicken of the Sea?

Kudos to HOVERBAT on making this game so enjoyable, ive played it through 4 times now, and watching this has made me go play it again,
I am loving this run, and one day i hope ZELDA PANOPLY will get the love it deserves too, its much older and has sadly gone under the radar, does anyone know how to reach Jared and let him finally know this game exists?
Ive played though PANOPLY about a dozen times, and would absolutely love to see it get some love too

I watched a playthrough of this at the beginning of last year but I barely remember it, and certainly nothing this far in. I blame having covid at the time. On the plus side, it's all new again!

Question, in case anyone sees this.
I’ve started playing this on my Steam deck but am getting soft locked by the down stab bridge crossings. Was able to bypass the first via chicken. However I can’t reach maze island at all. Either the fish aren’t jumping out early enough to lift me up, or my momentum isn’t being maintained. The result is I get halfway across then face plant into a fish instead of continuing to bounce. Everything else feels and runs great. But I don’t know if there’s something wrong with playing on deck or if I’m missing some trick.

The most stylish gameplay
Yes Jerd! The Magic Shield blocks all projectiles without need of Reflect. However, it doesn't Reflect without use of the spell. It even blocks thrown maces from Lizalfos! There are 3 more Zelda treasures to find in this world that do similar things!
Enigma Spell? Sounds fun and not at all murder-y.

Is there any chance that Jared would play FF6 T-Edition? It is a hack for FF6 that is FULL of extra content(new spells, enemies, summons, side quests in pubs, etc), it is fairly difficult and fixes some of the problems that the original has.
I think it would be great for Jared to play it on YT.
