The spiders were real. They sourced over 200 of them from New Zealand. To get them to move in the desired direction, they used hair dryers to blow warm hair on them.
NOO. SHUT UP.. NO WA.. I HATE KNOWING THAT.
@@awkwardashleigh He is right, they are 100% real.
*Most of the spiders were real. The "big Bob" huge one is animatronic, for example.
If it helps, the "New Zealand" spiders are a type that cannot bite humans. @@awkwardashleigh
I know most of the spiders were real. But I think the ones that leapt up to the cameras looked fake. The one that leapt to the man's camera at the beginning looked like a rubber spider
I love that every time Ashleigh reviews a movie with Jeff Daniels in it, she thinks it's Uncle Joey from Full House.
😂
He does look a bit similar.
I hope Ashleigh was maybe thinking in the back of her mind - Dumb and dumber
@@adrianhempfing2042 I don't see that movie in her history, did she review it?
@@benjamingardner3314 ah bummer . Maybe she hasn't seen it yet
I can see that. Especially in this.
This is the movie that makes you even more afraid of spiders!
RIP, Julian Sands, 1958-2023.
Hallowed are the Ori!
Somewhat poetically for this film, he died trekking through the wilderness 😞
Apparently not a name she needs to know though so...
RIP in pepperonis
Yeah RIP, loved his performance i as Warlock.
He was really good in Boxing Helena..early 90s its pretty messed up but I thought it was so cool when I was a kid
“EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS.” That should be another film you put on your list. The spiders in this movie are only babies compared to the critters in that one.
Great reaction as always, apart from a few jump scares in this, I find this a fun movie.
Excellent movie!
28:05 I saw this in a theater with my best friend and his wife.
Right at this very second he suddenly grabbed her leg and she screamed like she was dying.
No spider on the screen, no jump scare in the movie, but a few hundred random strangers all screamed with her.
Best part of the whole movie.
Also, I love this movie!
RIP Julian Sands.
As a tribute to this actor we lost so recently, consider watching Warlock, my favorite Julian Sands movie (though I admit it's not great, but also, not awful - definitely fun though).
If nothing else, it qualifies for Hallowbeans.
I feel like mentioning that "Warlock" feels like Julian Sands most iconic movies.
Vibes is another fun movie Julian is in. Bonus - movie also has Jeff Goldblum!
"Are they having a secret spider meeting?" Well, Ashleigh, when a mommy spider and a daddy spider love each other very much, they give each other a very special hug and weeks later all the eggs hatch.
Secret spider meeting sounds like fun .
Not that I wanna attend that meet.
Reminded me of Witches, Angelica Houston, they had secret meetings. But they weren't spiders

RIP Juian Sands. He had such a comforting presence. He was a great actor and in some of my favourite movies, but I always especially appreciated him in scary movies (Rose Red nearly killed me as a teen).
Rest in peace to Julian Sands. I so happened to see him at Texas Frightmare 2022 a few months before he went missing. Major tragedy to the acting community.
He was great in 'Warlock'.
Is no one going to call out how Ashleigh's fear response in a fight or flight situation (Jump scare at 5:22) is apparently to yell out *Checks notes* "Fuck my ass"
I noticed, but there are NO appropriate responses. LOL!!

RIP to Julian Sands, who died tragically earlier this year. You should have "Warlock" (1989) on your next on your Hallo-Beans watchlist, which he played the titular character.

I agree. Warlock is one of my favourite fantasy horror movies.
I was always a fan of his, he had such a unique look and voice. Personally I'd be curious to see Ashleigh's reaction to "A Room with a View", and one scene in particular. 😄
Warlock is such a scary film.... would love to see Ashleigh react to it!
@@Johnny_Socko That is a very good movie. With a lot of great British actors including young Helena Bonham Carter and Daniel Day-Lewis.
Julian Sands, the etymologist, recently passed away. He was hiking in the San Gabriel mountains outside Los Angeles and was lost for several months before Search and Rescue recovered his body.
Hw was absolutely magnificent as the bad guy in Warlock, another 80's horror film that should be on your list.
I liked him in _Rose Red_ too
I've always been terrified of spiders. My oldest sister rented this movie for our movie night. She said she had more fun watching me watch the movie. My BIL planned ahead and had stuff placed around the room that he could 'touch' the back of my arm or on my ear with so I'd think it was a spider. I've never screamed so much in my life. This is the first time I've watched this movie since then and I still jumped everytime.
"Screamed a lot, laughed a lil bit, was in suspense the entire time"
Honestly, the perfect description of what a great horror movie should be!
Fun fact! Most of the spiders were real, but one spider was made as animatronic for the close up shots. And that animatronic was created by one of the Mythbusters, Jamie Hyneman.
I thought he made the spiders in Jumanji

I guess we can only suppress that survival instinct so far.. 🫤
I guess I'm a rare person who likes spiders enough that I'm even scared by this movie. I LOVE this movie!
Yup, same feelings here. (About J Sands too.)
Any movie that manages to scare me with something I'm not scared of is a good horror flick.
😞 Yep, Julian Sands was in a lot of films I really loved. RIP.
When I saw this movie in 1990, I, A 22 year-old Marine, spent the entire movie crouched in my seat, my feet on the cushion, because there was NO WAY I WAS DANGLING MY LEGS to the floor. 😵💫 Side note: I just thank goodness it was Not The Cat!
LOL I saw this movie in the theaters with my cousin when it came out. I was 9, so my cousin Chris was 11. Our grandma took us. She was originally suppose to see a different movie, but I guess she thought I was going to be scared so she sat a few rows behind us to keep an eye on us. LOL honestly I think that movie scared her more than it did us. I'm not really afraid of spiders, but I don't do big ones and I sure don't do webs lol. Honestly I think this movie erks me more now as an adult then it did as a kid. I'm with Ashely. I'm not putting youe ass outside. You come into my bubble space and I'm smashing your ass.
So you basically played "the floor is spiders" game?
Also thank you for your service.
The blond guy, the spider expert, Julien Sands. He died a few months back. He was hiking and got lost. They found him over a month later. Poor guy.
John Goodman was the highlight of this movie for me when I was a kid. I laughed at every damn line he had, lol. I'm glad he didn't die by the end. The true badass.
The small spiders used was a species from New Zealand that, despite their fierce appearance, is a docile member of the crab-spider family and is, in fact, harmless to humans.
Yes, Delena cancerides, known as the Avondale spider in New Zealand but is actually native to Australia where it's known as the Social huntsman.
This was huge when I was a teen, we flocked to the theaters to see it. And I agree, "Not the cat!"
Same. I was 18
"Not the Cat"
One of the things that makes this movie so scary to me is the fact that it is plausible. I'm sure there are scary ass spiders in the Amazon that still haven't been discovered. Another great reaction, thanks Ashleigh!
And the only thing keeping them from the rest of the world is their natural environment. You know, the environment that industry keeps destroying by clear-cutting. It's only a matter of time till something gets unleashed....
Creepy-Crawly facts about Arachnophobia: (1990) 1) John Goodman’s hollow-soled boot. When it came to the welfare of the live spiders that were used during the making of the film, the team went to great lengths to prevent any harm coming to the little critters! In one scene, where John Goodman’s character, McLintock the exterminator, stomps on a spider, they actually used a boot with a hollowed-out sole, so that it would trap the spider instead of killing it. 2) Natural causes. If any shots of dead spiders needed to be filmed, the crew had to be very particular about which arachnid corpses they would use for propping. They would only use spiders that had died of natural causes. 3) Big bob. The huge spider that gets into the coffin at the start of the film was actually a bird eating tarantula. At the time of filming, there was only one in the whole of the US. Frank Marshall, who directed the movie, decided to call the spider ‘Big Bob’ after his friend Robert Zemeckis. 4) One of the MythBusters built the animatronic Big Bob double. Near the end of the film, the characters face off against the enormous bird eating tarantula, which the director had nicknamed Big Bob. Whilst a live spider was used for some of the filming, a mechanical double had to be built for some of the scenes. This job went to none other than Jamie Hyneman from MythBusters! As he often says on the show, he used to work in movie effects, and this animatronic spider was one of the first movie props he created. 5) Steven Spielberg hid in the footwell? In a video with GQ, John Goodman revealed that when they were filming a shot of his exterminator truck travelling down a road, the world-renowned director Steven Spielberg (who executive produced the movie) was crouching down in the passenger footwell. Spielberg said, ‘only we will know I was here.’
"Arachnophobia." The film that taught us that spiders could scream....
God, how I love every single frame of this batshit movie.

You now know the Australian Hissing Spider exists...

Hopefully this is the year you get to The Crow, Bram Stokers Dracula or Interview With A Vampire. Three great movies that get passed over every year. Damn. Not the cat.
R.I.P to Julian Sands. Great character actor.
In the graphic novel they showed the original opening of the movie. he wasn't two, when Dr. Ross was a baby the spider descended down onto his face while he was in the crib. That memory scarred him forever. That was why he was paralyzed with fear at the end of the movie, and you could still hear a little bit of the music that was playing on his mobile in that final scene if you listen carefully.
"Eight Legged Freaks" is also a scary movie about spiders. Not quite as terrifying as Arachnophobia. But on the DVD of it came the directors' film project as a student, and THAT was far more scary. Because to market, a story has to hit some points, but a student film doesn't HAVE any such restriction, so it is far scarier.
One the one hand, I'd like to see Ashleigh react to it, but on the other hand I don't want to see her have a nervous breakdown.
14:54 When you cough, they lift up momentarily, it's to check for hernias although the doctor is supposed to do more than just cup them, you turn your head so you're not coughing in someone's face, especially a doctor.
17:49 Egg Sac, Where all the little bitty spiders come out of
20:02 EXIT ! STAGE LEFT !
26:20 THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID !
"Turn your head and cough" As opposed to "let me cup your balls and now you cough in my face."
For those who know it's for hernias but don't know what they're feeling for, as OP said, your balls lift when you cough. A hernia is a tear or separation in the muscle wall/floor of your abdomen and your intestines can begin to drop into the scrotum (ballsack), so when your testes lift, they can tell easier if there is a hernia by feeling for the intestinal drop.
@@rhystilshadowhelmunless you have a doctor with a secret fetish of holding your nutsack...
The house they used in the film is just few miles from where I live. And unfortunately Julian Sands, the actor who played the spider expert, disappeared not very far from there while hiking during a storm recently. They didn’t find his body until months later
They chose the huntsman spider because "leggy" spiders are extremely creepy, and they are defs all legs. However, they are also huge, fast, and agile--you put one on the end of a pencil and it can easily climb to the top on the very tips of its long legs. But they are also completely harmless--they are a "friendly" spider, in that they don't bite unless very agitated, and will happily crawl over anything you put them on.
I first saw this as a kid while staying at a friends house. That place was out on a farm and was made from actual logs with spiders everywhere, and after the movie ended we went into the yard to sleep in a tent….I did not sleep that weekend.
Oh and I live in Australia, our normal spiders are no joke.
This is truly the ultimate horror movie. Glad its not forgotten about. EOM Reacts also reacted to this movie. Possibly even more entertaining. Both great
I've woken up to a spider in my nose... it's arms started coming out, bending back, pushing at my nostril to pry its body out of my nose... and that's all I'll say about that :/
This movie still holds up, thanks for a 'fun' watchalong with you, Ashleigh.
Woke up with a spider in my ear when I was little... traumatized lol
Julian Sands (the expert) also passed away this year BTW. His body was found in June, months after he went missing on a hike in some California mountains. Very sad but at least his family finally got some closure.
The spider species they used was the communal huntsman spider, native to (you guessed it) Australia and introduced into New Zealand.
Huntsman are generally solitary, but the communal one lives in groups under tree bark. Although the communal huntsman is relatively small, the huntsman group also includes some of the largest spiders. The golden huntsman is the largest in Australia and it has a legspan of ~25cm (10 inches).
The majority of large spiders you see on youtube videos in australian homes are common huntsmans which are smaller than that, about the size of your hand splayed out.
The largest spider by leg span is the giant huntsman in Laos, with a 12 inch legspan...
The largest spider by weight is the Goliath Birdeater, a species of tarantula, weighing up to 6 oz. with a 5 inch long body. They are found in South America.

26:31 - The largest spider in the world is commonly known as the Goliath birdeater, according to National Geographic. This tarantula can reach up to 11 inches in length and weigh 6 ounces; this size is big enough to cover a dinner plate, says Guinness World Records.
The actor who played the scientist was Julian Sands he did recently. Died while hiking in California during a snow ❄️ storm. Did many movies.
Not a fun fact: First time I watched this movie I was eating popcorn out of a big bowl in the dark. I immediately turned on a light to make sure my bowl contained no spiders. I also doublecheck lamps now when turning them on... ugh (this was years ago)
Great movie and reaction
R.i.P to the recently passed Julian Sands who plays Dr. James Atherton. The scientist who was responsible for the expedition that ended up dealing with the general.
You should watch him in Stephen King's Rose Red. He plays a mind reader.
Those spiders hatched SUPER fast. I just looked it up, and spider eggs usually take a few weeks. This movie took place (after we see the young doctor arriving in town) within one week probably.
Some wholesomeness from Wikipedia: The cast actually adopted a few of the spiders and were not afraid of them in any way. After "cut" was yelled on the set, the cast would stop screaming and say "Oh, be careful, don't step on that one" and "don't forget that one over there", laughing the whole time after "cut!" was called.
The noise the camera makes is winding up the film. This is all pre-digital cameras. So when she took the last photo in the roll, so it was auto winding so she could take out the roll.
Arachnophobia is terrifying! It is the only movie that legitimately scared me! The spiders were real and it sent chills down my spine! It is a perfect Halloween treat!
I like this film . horror for many of us , with a little humour in there
Not all the spiders were real. There are some puppets. I loved this movie but a lot of the spiders were mistreated. Like the one under John Goodman's boot. That was real. I love spiders. A funny story about a snake coming out of the toilet: when Jake "The Snake" Roberts was in Australia for a show once, Jushin "Thunder" Liger refused to even have his locker room on the same side of the arena as Jake. That's how much he hated snakes. Well, during the show Jake's snake got loose and went into the toilet. It then came out of the toilet in Jushin's locker room. It freaked Jushin out. Jake had to give up his snake to customs & didn't get it back.
OMG, I didn't realise Julian Sands was in this as Doctor James. He just passed away recently so it's kind of poetic and sad to see him in this. If you want to see more of him, you should watch the campy delight "Warlock".
Not the cat! That's how you know the spiders are the villains, when they killed the cat. That's what Hollywood taught me, anyway.
The "big bad" spider was partly animatronic, but was also played by a goliath birdeater, the largest spider in the world. And yes, they do get that big. BIgger in fact.
The opening was filmed at a Tupui, a South American mesa that is completely ecologically isolated from the rest of the world, and so has been the subject for years of speculation about "lost worlds". They were also featured in "Up".

I just wanted to give a small shout out to Julian Sands, the blonde, British scientist, who died this past winter while hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains. They finally found his body in June, after the snow had melted.
You can also see him in The Room With a View and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Dave Coulier is the guy from Full House, they somewhat look similar but yea, no, that is Jeff Daniels in this movie and Dumb and Dumber as well. When I was a kid I thought the same thing though.
This movie is Fantastic. I hate spiders as well, but when I want something that will make my skin crawl and pull the blanket in closer, I watch this movie. And I love that she said not the cat get the humans 😂
I don't know why but Ashleigh's reaction to seeing the photographer's emaciated corpse was hilarious.
I'm sure this is already been said numerous times but I'm not going to go through all the comments and see, but the actor that played the long haired scientist was recently pronounced officially dead when they found his body after going missing on a hiking trip. They had to suspend the search until after the winter and they finally found him. Very sad story

Imagine watching this movie by yourself in the dark and the only light is coming from the television and a spider lowers itself from the ceiling between you and the television. That is exactly what happened when I watch this movie on VHS in the early 90s.
I didn’t panic or scream. I just turned on the light and killed a spider.
Julian Sands, may he rest in peace. Kinda weird hearing his line, something about a man that climbed up somewhere and never returned is just odd to hear now. Saw this movie in theaters, it was awesome, a great experience with a large audience.
The dad is Jeff Daniels, probably best known for Dumb & Dumber (with Jim Carrey). He was more recently in the show The Newsroom, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, which was pretty good. He won the award for Best Actor in a Drama for the first season.
I saw this in the theater when I was a kid with all my friends and the scene where the spider crawls out of the mortician’s nose made us all jump and scream so badly that the box of popcorn (which the spider was in in the scene) flew in the air and landed in my open screaming mouth which of course made me freak out more bc my mind went immediately to spider. Also RIP to Julian Sands
Awesomely hilarious yet traumatizing. Never was scared of spiders before... welp, I definitely caught the phobia back in 1990! lol
I was around 5 or 6 when this movie was released. My mom and her boyfriend decided to play it, it was a new movie and they didn't think it would be traumatizing. However, after the Goodman scene, I was DEEPLY traumatized and couldn't watch any more. I bolted out of the room, with my newly-acquired arachnophobia firmly in place. It took me many years to attempt to "face my fears." By the time I did, I found the ending kind of silly, but my phobia was already deeply ingrained.
Loved to see you scared, Ash. Sad to see the late Julian Sands here. Fun facts here:
1) Steven Spielberg realized here about the resemblance between John Goodman and Fred Flintstone, and oofered him the role.
2) Steven Spielberg had planned for the film to be joined for the 2nd Roger Rabbit short, "Roller Coaster Rabbit". But Michael Eisner (Then Disney's CEO) put the short as an aditional atraction for "Dick Tracy". Spielberg wasn't happy about this and after "Trail-Mix Up", the third and final Roger Rabbit short, other projects with the character were canned.
BTW, Ashleigh, yes -- spiders DO get that big. 😁 The biggest huntsman spiders in Australia are the world's largest spider by length/width measurement, and the goliath birdeater tarantula is the world's largest spider by mass. Google them if you'd like to see pictures. 😁
Pretty sure the largest huntsman are from Vietnam
I believe they used the Goliath as the main villain spider for this movie.
14:45 - *Hahaha* I love that Ashleigh's question is why you have to turn your head, instead of why they're grabbing your genitals and having you cough. I've never actually had a doctor do that, but you turn your head so you're not coughing in the doctor's face.
Not the Cat! My first viewing of this was in 1990 after winning tickets to an advance screening in Chicago with Siskel and Ebert, the original movie reviewers and now, 34 yrs later I've come full circle with Ashleigh, arguably the best movie reviewer on YT. Life is good.

I was so keyed up and jittery by the time this movie was over that, when my friend and I walked out of the theater, I wanted to sprint madly around the theater building just from sheer nervous tension.
20:00 This scene traumatized my brother when we saw this. And I don't mean that in a dramatic or exaggerative way, I mean it literally traumatized him (he was like 10). He actually developed arachnophobia afterwards, and was afraid to take showers for MONTHS afterwards and made my parents check it for spiders before he would take one.

Every time I think "such and such was Ashleigh's best video", you put out one where I have to change my mind. This was awesome. 👍
I'm so glad there are no properly eusocial spiders, like imagine a thousand spiders cooperating like ants, closest thing that exists are social spiders that kinda live together, they still build huge webs together though
The spiders in the movie are Delena cancerides, the Social huntsman so yes, these are the spiders that live together. They're native to Australia although those in the film are from New Zealand; they were introduced there some time back and are known as the Avondale spider.
If you want to get scared of spiders but laugh your head off, I would suggest watching Eight Legged Freaks next!
Whenever a doctor or other medical professional asks you to "turn your head and cough" it's purely for hygeine, so you're not coughing on them or in their direction.
The particular testicular exam for boys/men during a routine physical is checking for a hernia. Coughing causes the testes to adjust in a way that allows them to feel for irregularities.
I watched this as a child and it started my fear of spiders. As an adult, it's the only movie I've had to break up to watch in halves because my heart was racing too fast. They are doing a modern remake. It looks terrifying lol

By the end, my friend and I were holding each other’s clenched hands and had our feet up on the seat in front of us trying not to run screaming up the aisle. I’ll never forget it!
Loved the reaction and am looking forward to the rest of HalloBeans!
This was one of my favourite movies growing up. It kinda got forgotten in the ether of time, and I'm glad to see it be rediscovered in this new Reactor YT culture
To see you and Vkunia/Natalie Gold drop this within 24 hours is a double dose of awesome!!!!
My family learned two things from this movie:
1. When I say I'm afraid of spiders, believe me.
2. Children's screams can cause permanent hearing loss in adults.
Secret phrase is "not the cat". There is a famous screenwriting book called "Save the Cat" that discusses scenes such as this. Fun review.
Oh goodness, I remember seeing this in the theatre with my parents when it came out. We didn't actually expect it to be as scary because the trailers showed John Goodman a lot and made it look like it'd actually be more of a comedy lol. So we were surprised when he was hardly in it. Still a great movie. Go Vols!
You're off to a great start during this season. Great reaction! 👍🏿
"Spiders don't get that big do they?"
