Joslyn Davis sat down with the stars of the ABC Family hit series 'Switched at Birth' Katie Leclerc & Vanessa Marano to talk about their reaction to finding out the series got picked up for 22 more episodes, bonding on the set, getting to be mean to each other on camera, plans for the series love triangle and potential show secrets.
I just came here to hear her real voice for the first time, its like a different person lol.

Wow I had no idea Katie's "deaf accent" wasn't real. It's also amazing that they incorporated a character like Noah to explain Ménière's disease which is what she actually has. I wonder what that was like for her to have another actor portray her real life struggle.
+j0diRai The only reason I could differentiate the "deaf accent" was because on the visions/dreams when she lived with the Kennishs' she spoke more clearly.

I have just started this show because I am learning sign language and I can't stop watching it. Thanks to my classes I can see a lot of familiar vocabulary used throughout the show and I get excited lol. I am studying to be a interpreter , not because of this show but because I grew to love the language before I even knew about switched at birth. But I do think it is an amazing show that is a wonderful way to introduce people about sign language and hopefully get people interested in learning this beautiful language

She has Ménière's disease, a degenerative inner ear disorder, the symptoms of which include fluctuating hearing loss and vertigo; both her father and older sister have Ménière's disease also. It didn't affect her during childhood, that is why she speaks so well

I am hard of hearing myself, wearing both hearing aids and know some sign language. When seeing this show for the first time couple years ago, I was so amazed that they made this show, 'Switched At Birth'. I love this show a lot because it shows that world that deaf world is NO DIFFERENT than the hearing world. We are all the same and we are human being. One thing is different is we speak different language that all! Some hearing people are stubborn to see that and they make fun of us and laugh
oh my gosh I did not know she wasn't deaf
she lost her hearing around the age of 20, she is deaf. but at 20 your speech won't be limited like at a younger age.
+Hayden AJ yeah you're right, I guess she's hard of hearing, the condition she has seems to lead to complete deafness eventually, so websites say.
"Hard of Hearing" is a term I would use loosely to describe her. She doesn't even need to wear a hearing aid. She might have to at some point in her life, but not certain. My grandma had meniere's disease for decades and never needed a hearing aid, and she lived well into her 90's :)
She does have a pretty convincing "deaf accent" though, good acting on her part!

@DawnAnnaHarmonySD Her name is Katie LeClerc, and no, she's not actually deaf. She does a "deaf accent" (that's what she calls it) for the show, but she did take sign language in high school and her older sister teaches sign language. But, she actually does have an ear condition, called Ménière's disease, where she basically has vertigo attacks, and can't hear for a little while. But on the show, they're prepared just in case, and she says the attacks mostly happen at night, so she's doing good.
