I guessed that the actor of Emmet is really deaf but holy cow. The speed with which he signs on the show is slow compared to this!
Well he kinda has to slow down, especially at the beginning of the show cause everyone was just starting to learn.
@@sarahconlon2495 Katie isn’t deaf
@@jake24685 Katie has Menieres disease. It can cause you to be hard of hearing and you can become deaf. My Nanna has Menieres and although she doesn’t sign because she can hear, there is always the possibility of her going deaf. I don’t know all the ins and outs myself so it’s best to read up on it.
@@jake24685 katie is hoh
@@alexisd8190 I never knew that, I always wondered why someone hearing was given a role to play a deaf character but now it makes sense.
That moment Emmet has a mic.....

PHAHAHAHAHAA OML
namjimjoonjin his name is Sean not Emmett
Jesus Gaming his character is named Emmett, so that is what some people call him
it's so odd hearing Katie speak without her Daphne voice!!
Jennifer Hunt it's so weird to hear her without her daphne voice she sounds so different
First Name Last Name That's really rude. If I were right in front of you and you said that, I would punch you square in the face. That's rude, and disrespectful to the deaf community. If you were deaf, would you like to be called a seal? I don't think so. The next time, think about how your words will effect others. Choose kind and not mean.
ikr
Ummm....that's NOT appropriate! :O
Jennifer Hunt she is hard of hearing
I’m so sad that they canceled it off of Netflix... it was my favorite show of all time and got me into ASL
You can watch it for free on FreeForm! I was super sad for the same reason but now I get to rewatch it on there :)
@@isabelsimpson4211 thank you
Hi! I’m watching in on Stan in Australia 👍🏻
It’s on Freeform with ads and on Amazon with ads
it should ahev kept going. i needed bay and emmet back
I have a HUGE crush on Sean Berdy! He´s not only handsome but he also seems like a really nice guy!
I no the feeling but he's younger than me which is so depressing haha
Same here
samee
Lmao same
I know this comment is SUPER old but as someone who took years of sign language classes that coincided with the release of the show-just by chance- a lot of my classmates met him at a deaf expo and learned that he’s actually SUPER self absorbed
woah he signs really fast. I was trying to interpret what he says. I'm still learning to sign thru watching it here on youtube.
foreveryoung10643 well he has been deaf his entire life, but i am learning to sign so I tried to watch him but couldn't catch what he said lol
thegrangerwinchester stilinskibooklover Same
Same! I caught him signing “family” a few times, also I saw “work” but the rest was just like WHAAAA
Ive picked up a decent bit just from watching the show and noticing patterns :) i just watched the final episode last week, and im SO bummed that theres no more, i was loving the story lines, could tell they had to end in a rush... but with everything being rebooted now maybe they could have a new spinoff where bay and daphne are parents now and maybe see where Carlton ended up or something? Daphne being a doctor making a huge impact? Im not a writer but would be awesome to see whats next!
Sean's interpreter is my role model! He is so gifted, I can't believe how fast Sean signs and this guy never once loses track!
You would also love Marlee's interpreter Jack. He's awesome. :)

"It's english it's not like truly learning another language" haha I bet that offended Sean berdy
fudgerknuckle I know it was such an ignorant statement! Unfortunately, I’m sure Sean has heard much worse.
@@heavenknox yeah cause like just because it’s English doesn’t mean it’s not a language it’s definitely difficult to learn but it’s definitely worth learning
@@grey1752 point is Asl is not English though
i don’t think he meant it in a bad way so i dont think he really minded it but idk
I don’t think he meant it in a bad way. I think he was just trying to get the point across the ASL is not as abnormal as people think.
Switched at Birth inspired me to sign
Kim Berkley me to I’m trying to learn by myself but this show HELPED ME ALOTTTT
Im trying to learn because my brother is deaf.
Fr tho
Same!!!! I watched season 1 and and it inspired me to start learning. Wish me luck!!!!
ME TOOOO😭😭
omg sean signs sooo fast i cant keep up! i mean i understood one or 2 signs from what he is saying and i get that the interpreter is not talking at the same rate as him he is talking after him
Huda H yeah. All I got was family and 3 A. M. Lol
Huda H Ik I could never be an interpreter I would mix up word from watching him and the repeating I would say so weird sentences
If you use CC, it shows what he’s saying at the bottom of the screen :)
Katie does have hearing loss of her own. Katie was diagnosed with Ménière's disease, a degenerative inner ear disorder, the symptoms of which include fluctuating hearing loss and vertigo. She grew up without any knowledge of her disease, and is therefore able to use speech as any hearing person would. She DOES use an accent to emphasize her character's hearing loss.
Emmet is BAE 😍
PretzelKnows Best bye he is my bae
He's Bay's!
PretzelKnows Best no. vanessa is bay
Omg bae and bay why has this happened
"It's English..." GROAN!! I can't believe he said that after being on the show...and that they just let that slide without addressing it!!!
American Sign Language is not and never will be "English." It has a completely different grammar and syntax, and it doesn't even have a properly representative writing system. Anyone who says that it's any form of English can stand to be properly educated. Now, PSE (Pidgin Signed English) or any form of Manually Coded English is a different matter. Often, on the show "Switched at Birth," people talk as they sign, which is a sure indication that they are using a more English grammar and not "pure" ASL grammar. It is just about impossible in reality to sign ASL and speak English simultaneously while being true to both languages. And now I can get off my soapbox for now.
@@kristenhanisch8508 it’s not that serious
@@BabyKylis um- excuse you? Yes it is. We don't need ignorant people when it comes to the deaf community 😐
@@BabyKylis i’m taking ASL classes right now and it really is that serious. word formats are different if you took the time to look at the language then you’d understand if it’s serious or not.
ASL is another language... it is NOT English. They are not one in the same. ASL has been declared its own language.
the words still mean the same thing. Lamp in ASL still is a lamp in English.
Savannah Ferrell just like a lamp in french is still a lamp in spanish or english...it's just that in ASL it has a sign instead of a different spelling
Savannah Ferrell okay but it’s still not English 🤷🏼♀️
It is too people
Leah Demko when he said that my heart dropped! Signing is NOT English. Even S.E.E is not actually English.
yeah i did not now that he is really deaf. i watch switched at birth so much that i am learning how to sign
leticia vargas my moms name is letti
Lucas... you were doing so well until you said ASL is English. Noooooo! I am sure Sean and Marlee will be happy to explain why it is a totally different language. :) But that being said, I am glad that the cast and crew at SaB are learning ASL. I wish we had more programs that featured sign, and that did it as well as SaB. I like that the sign language is not forced - it is a natural part of the story line and the signed and spoken lines of each character is as one would expect in real life.
I understand what you mean... But what they are learning is English words symbolized (if you get what I'm going at) with your hands. It is another language, just in different circumstances with how its done. Since you speak through your hands and not your voice.
Taylor Moore I know that I am a bit late, but I still want to clear this up. ASL is not just "English words symbolized"; that is SEE or Signed Exact English. ASL is a fully independent language, with its own syntax and vocabulary. For example ASL does not use words like "is", "be", and "are". Instead those concepts are conveyed using facial expression (i.e., you would just sign "I STUDENT I" while nodding your head to mean "I am a student."). Furthermore the signs don't resemble exact English words. For example the sign for "favorite" can also mean "prefer" as far as I know. It also uses some concepts like directionality, that are specific to sign language and can not be used in phonetic language. Directionality means, that the direction in which you do a sign can determine the subject and the object without the need to actually sign them. So you can sign the sign GIVE starting near your body and ending near the body of your conversation partner to mean "I give you".
@Julia Path @Taylor Moore
I know I’m even later, but I wanted to second Julia’s words and add that ASL as its own, fully-formed language. For multilingual folks, I’m sure you’ve come across situations where a turn of phrase or idiom in one language really doesn’t translate into the other. An example I can think of from childhood is my parent telling me in French, “Mettre les bas dans les pieds” (though in a more slang-y way that is hard to reproduce here). A super direct translation to English would be, “Put the socks in the feet” or “Put your socks in your feet” which doesn’t make any sense. It means, “put your socks on.” Now that I think of it, I’m not sure if this counts as an idiom or not.
All that to say: ASL has idioms as well, that don’t translate into spoken language and can’t (and shouldn’t) be boiled down to mean “English-on-the-hands.”
[Edited for clarity]
Thank you I was about to comment this! The grammar is completely different in a lot of ways. And signs that don't translate directly like "kissfist" etc. However it's kind of ironic because most of the time they don't use the correct grammar on Switched at Birth, it's more like PSE. (Some deaf people do sign like that though so I guess it's okay...?)
~:~
If is not English than why does every language and even country have their own sign language? If it was its own language, it would be universal and all deaf people, no matter what county they are from could communicate. You are splitting hairs, being a know it all.
I bet Emmet wanted to interject when Lucas said "And you know, it's English, it's not like you're truly learning another language."
That interpreter is so talented. He’s so quick that it lessens the awkward time between interpretation.
This is a great storyline and its cast is amazing. I love how it brings light to the deaf culture and its beautiful language. I hope they continue this show and maybe make new ones.
I'm taking sign language classes at my high school and completely forgot about this show, which revolves around sign language! I just started watching it and I am in love with it! I can actually understand some of the signs and it's pretty cool!
their story is so moving especially that they all want to learn sign language. its not like they are saying " ok done. I don't have to use ASL anymore" and also Katie and sean seem to work really hard to do the show. I think they are all great people. they are definite rolemodles
Some deaf people I know adopt a "hearing" voice for social situations, so I was wondering if Katie did the same thing - after research, I now realize this is her natural voice! :)
Omg Emmett is really deaf? Never knew
I never knew that ether
Sean and yes. He is.
His fake mom is also deaf :)
His name is Sean Berdy.
He was also the deaf kid in sandlot.
Actually cringed at that statement... "it's English, and not like truly learning a new language." Please educate yourself before saying such statements.
I literally said the same thing it's as if he doesn't even watch the show this is a theme throughout it. He probably only watches his scenes smh
He was saying it as in they are the same words. Like cup is still a cup in ASL, and lamp still means lamp. The words mean the same thing. That's all he was saying.
Kathy Kastanes If you want to say dog, but you don't know the sign for dog, you literally just spell the English word "dog" so technically speaking it's English, just expressed in hand motions.
Shelby Gold I know this was 10 months ago, but ASL and English have different Grammer and rules. Yes you can fingerspell, which is closer to English, but ASL and English are still two different languages.
Savannah Ferrell Well surely that applies to other languages like Spanish and french then? It’s not spoken English but “lámpara” still means “lamp”?? Sign Language isn’t English. For the love of god please learn something about (D)eaf culture before saying dumb shit
Did he just say after working on a set with deaf peoples for a long time that ASL is just English and "luckily" not another language?
No he said truly

Okay, it's so weird hearing Daphne talk because i'm so used to her sighing and her voice in the show. I want to learn sign language because of this Netflix Series.
Sean rolling his eyes at “soon we’ll all be fluent” cracked me tf up
I've noticed a lot of comments about ASL verses ESL. Let me just clear something up as a ten plus year signer. When the hearing cast are signing, they are using American Sign Language signs, but speaking and signing English sentence structure, which is also known as English Sign Language or SimCom=Simultaneous Communication, which is a combination between ASL and English. When the deaf cast are talking, they use ASL. All of the deaf cast members sign in ASL, regardless of who else is in their scene. Especially as the show has progressed. No ASL and English (ESL) are not the same. But both methods are used in the show.
It is more like a gray area for the hearing and deaf actors. The hearing are able to learn quickly and communicate with the deaf actors, and the deaf are able to understand what is being said to them. I am a 2+yr signer, and though I don't like ESL in the show, it is still a good story and everyone is on board with everything. Good job ABCfamily!
This show is what started me to help to learn sign language that was almost a year ago and one of my teachers gave up her prep to teach sign language and I signed up right away
Katie is an amazing actor! She does a great imitation of a deaf person, it's weird to hear her real voice!
"It's really cool."
"YEAH ITS REALLY COOL"
I agree, most people don't see ASL as a language, but it really is. I honestly have to say its the most beautiful language, & I'm taking classes to learn it. Its really fun!
I started sighning because of this show it has been really inspirational and I found out Hey if some deaf people don't talk now I know what the were saying and I felt like Vanessa and kaite we a really big part of me wanting to learn. I have a variety of hearing and deaf friends now and it's amazing!
Oh my gosh it's so crazy to hear Katie's voice and not her Deaf voice. I know she's hard of hearing but man she is amazing!
OMG Sean Berdy signs so fast, it takes me forever just to remember a sign and then actually sign it. I am a beginner, so there's still some hope :) Sean is pretty cute by the way, just thought I should let everyone know ;) lol
My daughter learned ASL for her best friend after learning he was deaf when she was 5. Now at 12, she's completely fluent and lightening fast. 😊
Shocked me too! ASL is most definitely a completely different language. But...baby steps I guess. Teach them to sign English, and then slowly introduce them to the grammar when they've got a stronger grasp on the vocabulary.
this was such a great show definitely ahead of its time. i miss this
Emmett is one of my favorite actors on the show and Vanessa marano has really won me over! I didn’t like her act8ng or her character a fir bu as the show went on she makes u love her! And as for the woman who plays daphne she is just mesmerizing ….I think her name is Katie…not too sure but wow! The way she does her accent makes u truly believe she’s fully deaf! She’s amazing and such an inspiration
I really love this show, i dont know anyone that uses ASL but its great that we can learn from watching the show
Sean is hella fast at signing HOLYYYYY!!!!!!!
Post 2 of 2: Seans rambling at 2:00 just in case the terp didn’t do it justice continued: I talk & teach ASL all around. The crew has put in so much effort & is motivated in ASL. It makes an ASL family. Not just ASL but the wonderful family that we are on set. I always enjoy going to work because of the wonderful people, the family, it is exciting to go. I get up at 3am, but it doesn’t matter.
Katie’s voice is so soothing
I miss this series. I wish it would come back.
I know some sign language. My son who's nearly nonverbal uses it to talk. He's on the autism spectrum so he doesn't speak much and has articulating issues. I came up with the idea of signing because I wanted to communicate and thought it would help. He's so smart now!!
I'm an NZSL student, but I've also studied German, Spanish, and Japanese. I found NZSL was easy to learn because I already had the English concepts to "add" the signs to so it was like adding something extra to something I already knew, then as my NZSL studies got deeper it was easier to learn signed concepts that were foreign to my spoken English. Whereas learning a new verbal language you're learning entirely new concepts to replace ones you've known your whole life.
I love the father as a bad guy he does so well, people under the stairs, Lisa even on cold case. I never thought I could see him in a role like this but I love him as a dad... what a talented actor
You're right. We added captions now. Thanks for your comment!
Can someone explain me why Sean has a mic ???
Sometimes he occasionally talks and laughs
Yeah...Sean doesn't speak verbally very often ...but it's a blessing when he does :-)
they wanna pick up on when his hands touch
Wow I didn’t know emmet is deaf wow that very cool and signing looks amazing wow and Beautiful
My sister and I, we are both hearing, use sign language to communicate and people look at us like “what are they doing?” Even though we can speak and hear words!!
I love that they use at least ONE deaf actor (Sean Berdy aka Emmett)
I didn’t know Emmett was actually deaf until I watched The Society and I was like “ooooooh okay”
I'm so mad that Netflix cancelled the Society
Holy crap I miss this show. I wish another would come on like it. They covered so many important topics and now with where the internet is at with more people putting text of what they’re saying.. it would be a great time. Freeform where you at!!???
I speak asl and this show is so amazing lol its so weird but really awesome to have a show where they speak sign language
lyssa How do you *speak* ASL?
I love Switched at Birth, and its extremely talented cast so much.
Watching Sean Berdy signing....His hands are a blur, it is just so fast, I can't make out the signs he's making....lol. But, sign language is an infectious language, like Katie and Vanessa said, I wish I knew it...
Sean does sign very rapidly...but something tells me he understands that when people tell him they are learning sign, then he knows to slow down for them :-)
I'm an 11yr old trying to learn BSL (I'm from England) and the way I learn is to learn my favourite songs lyrics and how to sign the words from them and use them when I'm speaking (so in a song if it says 'I am' or something I can sign it when I'm speaking normally, I don't just go round signing songs lol). I don't even know anyone who is deaf I just feel like it's a handy skill to have.
Holy shit he signs so fast
I use sign language to talk with my friends during class, but the only problem is I had to teach them sign language
I love Sean (Emmett) he did a scene where he had to speak..it really got to me .
Wendy Burke yea fr
It's really interesting how after my sister and I watch the show, we already know some sign language, we start signing to each other what we're saying without even thinking about it! And you do just pick up on their signing, even words we didn't know before. I think it's a great way to learn because you get to watch an awsome show and learn a new language at the same time.
Me and my family started watching this (soon after stopping because the fighting and drama was getting on our last nerves and putting us in bad moods like they always were) but the sign language was really interesting and made me want to learn.☺😊
This tv show is brilliant!! And so welcome, so heared people can see how we feel!!
Sean Berdy is a deaf actor who is very lucky to be acting with those kind and positive actors/actresses around him .. He must be proud of other actors who try so hard to learn sign language.. personally I took 2 years to master the sign language..so we SHOULD NEVER EVER INSULT DEAF,MUTE AND BLIND PEOPLE !! -@errysyaffri on TWITTER ;'D
I miss Switched at birth😭😭😭
Actually there is a different type of sign language for most countries. Even Britain has a different type. Different languages and different slang and dialect make a need for completely different signs. Strangely enough, Britain's sign language even has different signs for the alphabet and other signs even though they speak english and only have differences and dialect, slang, etc.
I have a crush on a lot of people on this show! Sean Berdy and Katie Leclerc!!
I miss 2000 tv shows
I LOVE switched at birth SOOOOOO MUCH OMG OMG ITS THE BEST SHOW (besides modern family)
While that's true, a lot of the actors who play hearing characters are actually using Signed English on the show, meaning (for those who don't know) that they sign the words they are saying as they are saying them, regardless of ASL's grammar. For some of them, it is just like English. And they're learning. That's the important part.
lighten up Kathy. Hes an awwwwsum actor! and when youre in the spotlight live, ill remember to judge every single word you say..... :)
I know maybeeee I was a little harsh! but I just wish more people knew ASL was a real language!! So many people don't know/or don't believe it, which is so sad to think.
true...... i have family who have disabilities and ASL was taught as a fallback language, as they can not speak, even though they are intelligent
Happy birthday vanessa from italian boy live in rome
dphane sound so different
To be honest, I first started to watch their show few weeks ago and I thought it was interesting. But I did not know that Sean was deaf. Nor did Katie had Meniere's Disease. I thought they were all hearing. I find this very cool! :)
I love this show!!
Hearing Katie speak clearly, I can't help but wonder... is her true speaking voice the one she has in this interview, or the one in the show? Either way, she does an amazing job of adapting different accents!!!!!!!!! Her "deaf speech" is SPOT-on!!!!!!
(I'm deaf, so I can say this - no worries.) :)
I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! I'm going to start taking ASL classes because of this show!!!
I love this show its so beautiful with great message.
ASL is it’s own language, not another form of english or morse code. it has its own grammatical structure and rules etc.
The reason it's so easy for him to "sign" is because of the bilingualism of Sean Berdy. It's obvious that he has an amazing command of both English and ASL. HE IS ADJUSTING to the sign fluency of those around him.
I'm partly deaf, but I've never had to learn sign, it was never a requirement, but I've always wanted to. But I read lips alot, I've always had to make sure someone is looking at me to hear. Watching this show and the actors love for ASL only makes me want to learn more.
I love watching this show so fun love Emmet and bay together :)
i just finished the series like two mins ago i swear. I totally forgot about the signing thing and actually learned a bit while watching!
in love w constance’s dress
i love signing and i think it is so cool.
It's my wish to meet them and I love the whole cast special Sean!!!
Sean’s signing is so fast holy shiteeee
Sean🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 omgggggg actually like marry me please he is adorable
Oh i know this show
I always thought Daphne was really deaf. To me, she was absolutely perfect ❤
I have really LOVED the show ever since it first started. Sometimes I think and really wish hard that I could meet the cast just for a day or maybe 2 days. I know sign language so I could probably be able to talk in sign with them but I would also need an interpreter because I am vision impaired and it's hard to follow along to what they sign back to me.
I started learning sign language about two years ago, I was homeschooling so I didn't have anybody to practice with, outside of my class. I went back to school this year and made two amazing friends who know sign language, we got a sign language class starting this semester.
Love love loved this show!. ♥️
Hate they took it off the air😫😫
5th time watching the series. I can’t get enough!!
DAPHNE IS TRULY SO BEAUTIFUL
I want the show back .. (2021)
your right and she does darn good at it too
I loved Switched at Birth because of the integration. I love this.
I'm learning sign
There is definitely a difference between ASL and signed English. While it's true that the signs correspond to English words, the grammar and syntax are completely different.
