Brilliant explanation. Always wondered how they managed tacking and I didn’t realize they kept the foremast on he old tack angle to pivot the ship. I guess it also shields the main and mizzenmast at the point when the wind is directly ahead. Also didn’t realize they wore away from the wind to gain speed before doing it. On those big windjammers it must have been quite an event for a young sailor to see that all go down for the first time at sea.

I was astounded by the "dismasting" segment - (although I had thought that was "boxhauling") - something I'd sort of understood in concept but not quite followed. It looked beautiful on the video

Thank you for this interesting lesson of the different maneuvers the ship had to handle . Always whondered how they were (a)tackling.

Wow not only informative, I didn't know they sold RC sailboats let alone square riggers.
Thank U probably cost me a couple of grand getting my own.

Hi Chris, thank you for the comment. They do sell RC sailboats, but they are yachts or, at the most, schooners. If you want a square-rigger, I’m afraid you’ll have to build your own. If you look further in my channel, you’ll find a couple of “build videos”.

Hi Tommy, thank you for that. If you read any account of a first voyage, tacking ship was just a mysterious round of having ropes thrust into your hands, and having to pull. It would take weeks before a newcomer started to understand. Nev.

All the models have detachable sailing keels, from 3 to 9 kgs. In weight

How does the sheeting system work? I take it that the sheets are from the lower yards...with all the sails and yards above (on the mast) following? I mean that you don't have the full brace system like that on a real square rigged ship? interested because I have been building a Cutty Sark model from an old fence post. Would quite like to get her sailing. What servos do you use? I might have to fit a micro servo as the model I quite small.

      Hi, thank you.
I don’t use winches, but sail arm servos, with centrally pivoted arms. If you look at my videos of the build of “Parma”, you’ll get the idea. Regards, Nev.

What a beautiful model. Did you get away with not adding a keel? (I mean some models like this use a blade keel)

Hello Erig, thank you for that. I have never sailed on a square-rigger, so cannot speak from personal experience, but I am aware of an expert. See "The Way of a Ship", by Alan Villiers, for description, and drawings.
