  • I think every layout needs a backdrop to complete the scene and maintain the illusion. This episode talks about how my thoughts on backdrops and how I built mine for the small HO scale layout that I'm calling "The Grunge." Join me as I build the background board for a 15"x90" layout, discovering some things along the way.
If you've ever wanted to build a small switching layout but didn't know where to start, this series is for you because it's all about how to build a small layout! There's a lot to think about when building a small layout, especially in a tight space, and we'll cover everything you need to know. As tender as that Gatorfoam appears in compression mode, I think I would use pan head screws with fender washers to attach the backdrop to reduce the chance of the screw head pulling through.

Thanks for the suggestion! I went back and did that in places in the follow-up video.

Informative info, thanks.. just starting out with building kits first. Loads of tutorials, info on CZcams has helped. Still in the newbie mode after more than 60 years away from model building. Most then were the plastic kits plus military vehicle builds along with battles in backyard.. some with glue still drying..

Great video. Hopefully you'll start picking up more subscribers because you have a lot of knowledge to offer to the model railroading community. 👍

Thank you! That's very kind. I've actually been quite happy with how many I've gained in a short period since I have been recently able to start posting regularly. But yes, hopefully the number keeps climbing!

I must have missed something about the background building photos? I'll have to watch this video again?

Really like your background photos. Would work great on my up and coming shelf layout. How were they made? Thanks for the great videos!

I found some pictures online and manipulated them in Photoshop to get the single long image. Then printed them on plain paper and used spray adhesive to attach them. I promised to do a video on the process but haven’t done it yet. I’ll have to get on that one.

I'm not sure but I think that intro sequence was photoshopped.
