A large brain carved out of polystyrene / styrofoam, made for an exhibition stand. The filler we use on this job is a water based plaster filler. Fitted with LED rope-lights for added visual effect.

Wow that came out perfectly. Adding the little wrinkles was good. Because as we learn something new it creates new wrinkles in our brain. So we want a wrinkly brain like a raisin.

Great video, I subscribed! The brain you crafted was phenomenal. I only have one question, where can I get a big block of styrofoam like that?

Actual Question…. What’s a pluck hole with regards to polystyrene? Is it a group of spheres that have come away from rasping and filing?

Is it possible to spin a foam block on a pottery wheel to make columns? Can you use sand paper to shape?

Hi Lush. It most certainly is possible. Take a look at our Giant Cup, Tea Cup and Rocket video projects (links below), and see this done on a large scale. Give it a try!

    Love this!!
I have a question... would you mind telling me what sort of filler do you use? I've tried all sorts and they either melt the foam, or don't stick to it at all! Is there a polyurethane-based topcoat filler that i've missed? Of course, I do understand if you've spent ages experimenting and don't want to give away your methods.

I think they said in one of the other videos that it's a water-based plaster. I had asked for elaboration but never heard back, so I looked into it a bit but I couldn't find an equivalent over here in the states. I'm trying some options out at the moment, such as lightweight filler used to patch sheetrock, and paper clay (home made, I found the recipe on a site called Ultimate Paper Mache).

Hi guys, apologies for the delayed response, we obviously get a lot of
requests so can't always get back to everyone and some things are
missed. This is one of our older videos so sometimes not all the info is
on there. But we've included it in the video description that its a
water based plaster filler as this is always a popular question. As Cari
says, many of our other videos include this filler as well, and its
just a water based filler that air dries and can be sanded back.
