  • A playthrough of Konami's 1988 arcade sports game, '88 Games.
Played on the machine's default difficulty level.
'88 Games is the third game in Konami's Track & Field series, hitting the arcades about a year after the ultra-successful port of Track & Field dropped on the NES. As the name implies, it was based on the 1988 summer Olympics in Seoul.
You can find my video of Track & Field here: • Track & Field (NES) Pl...
In truth, the gameplay of '88 Games isn't much different than that in Track & Field. You still compete for world records with bloodied hands, as nearly every event requires to smash the $#!+ out of the buttons to build a power or speed gauge, and it's still just as much fun as it has ever been!
I would've loved to have had a home version of this as a kid!
The biggest difference between Track & Field and '88 Games is most certainly the quality of the graphics and audio. Track & Field looked great in 1983, but by the late 80s, it wasn't impressing anybody. '88 Games, on the other hand, blew away most other 1988 arcade games with its big, colorful characters and it gratuitous use of sprite-scaling effects. They might not add anything to the gameplay, but they sure do make it make more fun to watch!
BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MOUSTACHES!?
And this might just be me being weird, but the announcer in the introduction reminds me a lot of the announcer in Marvel vs. Street Fighter. As he's saying, "Test your strength and stamina in eight events! Go for gold! '88 Games!" all I can ever think is the overzealous Capcom guy screaming, "Don't miss out on the enjoyment of a lifetime! Are you ready for a new challenger? Marvel Super Heroes versus Street Fighter!" Is it just me being weird, or does anyone else see what I'm saying there? ;)
Anyways, '88 Games might not innovate very much, but it is an excellent update to a classic arcade and NES game. Make sure you have some bandages nearby for your fingers, though!

Was this licensed? The Olympic Committee is notoriously litigious, but it looks to me like Konami cleverly avoided using Olympic trademarks like the rings.

Any plans to do a video for the official release of Kid Dracula for the NES or Takeshi's Challenge (the best worst game ever made)?

Is there an extracted rom kicking around of it? If not, I might do it on the Switch. I much prefer the NES though :) And I've considered Takeshi before. It's terrible but I love the game, so who knows, I'll probably do it at some point.
