- How to Paint Terr-cotta Planters!
I don't know about you but the orange terra-cotta pot doesn't really match my home decor. And other clay pots are way overpriced. So paint your own pot!

Soooo glad I found this!! I was about to start painting pots to give away with plants and this is just what I needed. Thanks for the sealer tip because I still want my pots to be breathable !!
Thank you! This is the only video I found super helpful. All the other videos just give you design ideas. Doesn't talk about sealing the paint at all. I wanted to keep my terracotta pots moisture wicking.
lemonan I’m glad it was helpful!
Excellent tutorial! I really appreciated how you showed the steps in order to paint to avoid touching wet paint. Also your description about the sealer. Super helpful!! 👏👏😁
Thank you for this information! I wanted to be sure I do it correctly. Also your plants in the background are thriving! 💙💙
Thank you. I am a new DIYer so this helps me a lot to understand how to properly paint the pots.
Thank you for making this video!🙏🏼 Can’t wait to paint some planters!🤍
Olga Kocharov I’m glad you liked it!
Finally! Info on breathable sealant for terracotta. Took me a long time on CZcams & Internet to find this secret tip. Thanks!
Thank you so much for all the deets and your techniques are so helpful. I was researching this topic, this is the first video that came up now there's no reason to watch another all my questions were answered. I'm already a subscriber and enjoy all your videos, thx again!!
Just found your channel. I love how through your explanation was. you answered my questions so I'm going to try. Thanks.
This video was so helpful. That was great info on the sealant.
Thank you for this info. I like to paint things on my terracotta pots (my favorite is a silhouette of a big foot/yeti lol) and I didnt know what to seal it off with. I will definitely have to try this.
Ali K I’m so happy this video was helpful! 😊
Great Idea, I'm headed to Home Depot to buy some pots , paint and sealant! Thanks so much for posting this how to video
Rita G your welcome! I’m glad it’s helpful!
I’m going to make this. Thank you for making this video. Shared it with all of my friends
Wow. Glad to see your video. Love this ❤️
VERY HELPFUL! Thank yp7 for mentioning that another sealant could make it start to bubble up
How fun!!! Thank you so much for this video!
Wow I wish I had found you earlier! I’ve got a bubble pot haven going on over here never heard of this sealer for terracotta. Thanks so much!
Such a useful video, I have been decorating mine but I learnt a lot about the sealer. Such a great idea too to brighten them up, thanks for your advice
musicalmarion thank you! Glad it was helpful!

Thank you for this video it was very helpful I wanted to paint a clay pot and seal it and this was very helpful.
Excellent. Just what I was looking for.
Perfect tutorial, full of great info.
i think its perfect to make an update, kinda like a review on the sealant you used.
This is why I’ve never painted a terra-cotta pot. Or used one (cause I only use white planters). Thanks for the info!
Thank you for this video! Could you do a video on the mulch you put around your pot plants. It looks like you use white pebbles. Do the plants like it and is there a reason for why you do it? Would love to know and if you've done a video already pls let me know 🙏🌱❤️
tank you so much for this useful video! 💕🌱
Thank you, all the info I needed!
Ever use cement effect paint on terracotta pots? Also was thinking of adding grout to paint to add texture.
Excellent work
Thank you, I have a question, what happens when you water the plants? I always see water coming through the clay, dont we need to use a water sealer before we start painting?
Thank you for all the great advice! I wanna start painting some of my own pots and this was super helpful!
Britt Broadwood thank you! I'm glad it helped!
I only use Terra cotta (no paint or anything) bc of the whole natural, breathability etc, and I don't mind the look...but I never knew about this so thank you so much for letting your plant crew know!
Jenna M if you want to make sure it’s still breathable, then this method is perfect! I have a lot of terra-cotta pots left orange but I have two rooms in my house that I prefer to have mainly white and gray pots to match the room decor. This way I can have pots that match and are still breathable! This would probably make more sense if a did a house plant tour.
@@plantmyhappyspace3477 nah I understand, although a tour would be cool:) I wish I could find more "different" terra cotta than the basic. Like with a nice etched design or something. Impossible unless u want to spend $$$$
Planning to paint my terracotta pot
Thanks for sharing this. Didn't know or realize that the clay pot breathes. I just want to do a "small" birdbath . Lol I was just going to spray paint it.
Super helpful! Thank you
Thanks! I’m all set!
Thank you! Can these painted pots withstand being outdoors?
Thank you for this video! All the videos i have seen are for totally sealing pot and I like the breathable aspect of terracotta so this is perfect!
very nice tutorial and idea looks beautiful thank you for sharing newbie here have a great day keep safe
Thanks ... easy instructions to follow ...
Lourdes McIntyre Glad it was helpful!
Your planters came out so stunning! Beautiful. Can’t wait to paint!!
Potato Itis thank you!
I was looking for penetrating porous sealant, they dont sell that kind here. It only says penetrating sealer, for fiber cement they say 😅 is it still okay to use?
Could you seal before painting??? Your plants are gorgeous btw!
What do you recommend if u want the pot to be breathable but have a glossy finish?
I watched a previous video and she said to seal before painting with mod podge and use mod podge it after you paint. She didn't say anything about breathable or anything. I've already did the pots & I'm going to put succulents in them, is this going to be a problem?
Awesome thank you
Hi!
Thanks for the inspiration!
Wanted some advice: I followed your demonstration exactly including the 511- my pot now has air bubbles after one water. Why did this happen?
Ótimas instruções.
Thank you for the video. I love terracotta pot because its airy and good for plants but I dont like the residue from watering. Does painting helps?
Yes
This is nice :) thank you
I saw a video that said you should soak terra cotta pots in water before using. Should the pots be soaked before or after painting?
Did you spray the sealer inside the pot as well?
Do you have to use a sealant if you spray paint the pot?
Please mention the name of the sealant you used in this video.
Thanks
Is this safe if you plan on growing edible herbs in the pots?
Why we need to use the sealer? What will happen if we don't use any sealers at all?
Hi I was wondering can I paint with chalk paint instead of Acrylic paint
Watching this in 2022. Thanks for the info!
What would you recommend to seal the saucer so it doesn’t mess up my furniture once I water plant?
Rustoleum clear I use the 2x spray paint gloss
Is it safe for the plant for me to put that sealant on the inside of the pot? I want to use spray paint on the outside of my pots and am wondering if I should put the sealant on the inside as a protective layer between the spray paint and the plant. Is that necessary or do you think the spray paint on the outside is safe and won’t affect my plants health?
I would seal the saucer with non porous sealant because of the moisture that would ruin your shelf.
Mariette Demarest this is what I suggest. I’ve been doing it this way for a long time with no damage to my furniture or shelves. The saucers have prevented the damage, the same way they would with ANY pot with a drainage hole.
@@plantmyhappyspace3477 the gal ftom Garden Answer just did a promo on the different sealents to use on clay saucers. Funny that it appeared the same day as your video. Lol
Where did you get your terracotta spray??
Will acrylic paint pens work okay for it to still be porous? I don’t care about having a solid color background that is orange, I just want my family members to each decorate a pot for me.
Kelendra Beesler any acrylic based paint (including pain pens) SHOULD work the same as long as you seal it correctly. But I’ve never done it so I can’t make any promises.
can i just paint the pot without applying sealer? ive been looking here in my country. couldn't find it people selling online.
Is this application for using the pots outdoors?
Is there any other cheaper alternative for sealing terracotta pot.
Thanks!!!
Such a detailed video. Thank you!
Where did you get your plant stands from? Love them!
Ezmeralda Cullum thank you! I buy all of mine off Amazon.
What is the name of the sealer you used?
Very good vid.....Peace Out!!
Loved your video. I bought the sealant you recommended. I read the label and it indicated the product was combustible, toxic and carcinogenic. I did use it on a couple pots but I used gloves and did it outside. It has a very strong odor. I then decided not to use and disposed of it.
Oof. Yeah i won’t use sealer either then. I wanna plant edible plants in my pots. 😅
What happens if you don’t seal??
brah
@@DracaliaRaythe colors don’t come out as bright. The paint will be matte
@@carriebell3566 I wound up not painting my pots haha
Thank you! But don't we need to seal the pot before applying the paint?
No
Probably not if you want to keep it airy...idk...lol
Seal inside of pot before painting , seal outside of pot 3 days after painting for best results
@@wix3759 will sealing inside not affect the plants?
@@loosawrr5092 nah it shouldn’t, terracotta will absorb it then once it’s sealed it doesn’t bother the soil/plant. The reason we seal the inside is because we don’t want the paint to crack on the outside, which will happen if the inside isn’t sealed as the terracotta will absorb the water when u water the plant and will ruin the paint job
can you use felt pens??
Can you not use oil pain instead?
Can a person us chalk paint? BTW love your video and I subscribed!!
Does it matter what paint you use? Thanks for the helpful video!
Think she mentioned only acrylic paints so it can be any paint as long as it's a water based paint. I'm not sure what oil based paints will do on this kind of medium such as terracotta and how it will work with water running through it. But all I know is that oil based paints are heavier and take a longer time it dry. Maybe the chemicals in oil based paints aren't good for plants. I'm guessing though.
Hi! What color did you use in painting your terracotta pots?
Hazel Santos it’s a really light gray color
Hi! I enjoyed this video, and the grey tones on your pots is so nice looking. Have you noticed if the pots still get that mineral deposit patina that they get? I’ve painted a couple pots but did not seal them. Also how does that sealant stuff feel? Is it easy to wash off your hands?
Kassandra Carnosa if the pots do still patina, it's underneath the paint because I've never seen it on my painted pots. I would recommend sealing you pots! And it washes off your hands pretty easily, but it doesn't come off surfaces easily at all.
Plant My Happy Space thank you so much for all the info! I’m gonna do it this weekend and I won’t need gloves
@@kassandralewis6714 Hey I want to give a try to painting my pots! You said you don't seal them, how have your pots held up over time without sealing?
This is the first time I’ve seen someone use a sealant
If I were to paint patterns, would the sealant smear them do you know?
Farah Azzam Taleb I’ve done it before and the sealant doesn’t smear anything as long as you let the paint dry properly.
Plant My Happy Space thank you!!
Is it necessary to seal the paint? what would happen if the paint was not sealed?
Saloni Jain it’s basically like never allowing the paint on your walls to dry. Watering your plant would keep the paint constantly moist. So the paint would bubble up to or move around. And if it’s currently dry because you haven’t watered you plant in awhile, it could easily chip and scratch off.
How do you sanitize pots to reuse?
Scrub em, you can wipe down with alcohol too
Hi there is the sealant glossy? If not do you think I can use a glossy acrylic seal then the sealer spray on top?
amy Nguyen the glossy acrylic seals aren’t usually made for porous materials. Which means the terracotta won’t wick moisture anymore. This means the pot isn’t breathable and then the paint will also start to bubble because water is getting trapped under the sealant.
Thank you! Is the sealer glossy though? Or is there no texture?
amy Nguyen there’s no texture. It maybe has a slight sheen but I wouldn’t call it glossy.
Are there any other alternatives for the sealant. I live in Malaysia, the 511 you used is really expensive here and not sold locally.. help!
Hanis Nn I’m sure there are alternatives but this is the only one I’ve used and won’t recommend something I haven’t used. You can look for another sealant as long as it claims to be for porous materials. Or claims to be a penetrating sealant.
@@plantmyhappyspace3477 thanks! Will look futher!!
Did you find any other sealant ? I live in Nepal and I did not find it either so... please help
@@rosymaharjan1600 yes i did! But in a hardware store. Is is solvent bases silicone to paint on slab, concrete or stones. The brand is Aja Winwin. Not sure if its available in Nepal
What will happen if i don't use sealant? Because it's so expensive.
Adrialyn Signo if you don’t use sealant, and use it properly, the paint will start to bubble up, move around, and get scraped off because there’s too much moisture.
Can you please share the paint brand? Also, you have mentioned it should be acrylic, how about multi-surface satin paint? Thanks in advance 😉
nadinzam acrylic is what it’s made out of. Multi-surface satin is just the description of the paint. And the paint I’m using is Valspar paint made for walls. Any acrylic paint, even craft paint as long as it’s acrylic will work.
Plant My Happy Space perfect! Thank you, for clarification! I’m a beginner so any advise will be helpful 🤓
😍😍👌
I wish I knew about penetrating sealers before I painted mine!
I painted multiple pots without knowing and now I have to repot and re-paint all of my planters :(
wait what happened to your pots? Do they retain too much water?
Hey I can't find this sealant anywhere. Have you got any other links to ones that are as good?
Hargzee here is the link to the one mentioned in this video. I have only ever ordered it on Amazon.
Miracle Sealants 511 Porous Plus 237ml spray (US 8oz) The Best Performing Penetrating Sealer on the Planet by Miracle Sealants www.amazon.com/dp/B00R7QQ7I4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_O.YjFbRWVF4MS
@@plantmyhappyspace3477 thanks however it doesn't seem to be available :(
Hargzee it’s currently out of stock but it does show it will be restocking. If you need it sooner, you can usually buy it at Home Depot or Lowe’s.
@@plantmyhappyspace3477 thank you :)
Is there anything similar that would work ?
what is the name of the sealant you used?
laura langley 511 porous plus sealant
@@plantmyhappyspace3477 thank you!
Can’t find the 511 porous plus . Can I use the 511 impregnator?
Angelica Moore no to 511 impregnator. The sealants are made for different surfaces. If you use 511 impregnator instead of porous plus, I can’t say it will work.
Plant My Happy Space I’m taking it back. Thanks so much. Please continue making great informative content.
Angelica Moore thank you! I’m glad you like my videos! I ended up ordering the porous plus on Amazon so you can look there 😊
Any recommendations for a similar sealant? I can't find 511 Porous Plus Sealer anywhere in Canada :(
Jackie Tsang I'm not sure what's available in Canada but any sealant that claims to be a "penetrating sealant" or "made for porous materials" should work.
Lol wasn’t paying attention and used the mod podge as white paint but it should be fine right..??😹
Where do you buy the sealant? Art supply stores? Craft stores? Hardware store?
I bought mine at Michael’s “craft” store in NJ.
Can you do this same process with spray paint?
Danielle Brown I honestly have no idea. I imagine as long as it’s acrylic based spray paint and you let it dry completely, it SHOULD work the same way. But I’ve never done it so take this with a grain of salt.
Thank you! 😊
Did you try the spray paint?
Danielle Brown no
What paint color is this?
Dominique Hardy It was a custom mix we had made at Lowe's. But it's basically a very light gray.
What type of paint do you use? And, do I need to prime my pot?
Non porous means a flat of low sheen finish
I wouldn't be able to leave the pot half painted like that and only on the outer esthetic. I would feel like I need to paint the whole surface of the pot inside and out because it will feel unfinished to me. And will bother me.
I thought so too but I mean it’s going to be filled with dirt and I don’t want paints messing with my plants 🪴
I have a question. How do I paint pots that already have plants in them? Will the paint stay on?
Are you really serious-? (Your question.)
